- Here I pour a cafe scence in Cordoba with watercolours. This shows and explains the process. Enjoy! More of my work can be seen at www.leslieredh...
I am the author of Watercolor 365 and illustrator of the children's book, Island in the Salish Sea. Both are available through Amazon.
Please stay tuned! I have some more exciting projects in the works.
While you are doing it, you would never think you would come out with the picture you do. That is wonderful. Thank you for sharing it.
I have watched your video over 10 years ago, and finally found it again, this video is truly a masterclass.
Thank you! I am so happy that you found it again.
Wow! one minute it looks like it is bleeding to death, the next it is a masterpiece. You know how to make magic!
You are so kind! Thank you
At last a pouring video that actually shows the pour in action, wonderful. I paid good money for a video that showed me nothing but applying masking fluid, it left me feeling cheated. Wish I seen yours before I parted with that money. Thanks for sharing
That is the most mysterious painting method I have seen. Really interesting
Hi, Leslie, this is awesome ..,i teach beginner watercolor in NYC, and have seen hundreds of watercolor videos...yours is one of the very best! certainly the most useful and complete demo of pouring i've ever seen, resulting in a remarkably beautiful painting. many thanks!
Yeah, it's a pretty cool site. Probably the most popular artist's network out there.
wow this is really amazing, i really wasn't expecting the end piece, but then again i wasn't sure what to expect either.
I have to agree with Janet. This has been the best video I've seen on pouring...didn't know it required so many layers of pouring. All the videos that I've seen have only shown one layer and I was always left wondering how they achieved such depth in the end result. No one discussed masking over painted areas, which I have always been afraid to do. Thank you for giving me the courage to try this.
I could never be that patient. It was beautiful btw.
I have never seen this done before. Absolutely LOVE it.
Awesome work!!!! I was glued to my seat to see the final result. I can't wait to try this technique. Thanks for posting!!!!
Absolutely incredible painting
Blew my mind . So beautiful
OMG !! Outstanding, Sensational and Amazing all rolled into one. 👏👏👏👏👏👏👍👍👍👍👍❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Thank you!
my gosh, you totally opened up my eyes to more uses for masking fluids, you are absolutely fantastic!!!!
That is the most awesome painting demo I have ever seen. Thanks for sharing
Thank you for taking the time to film this. I learned this in an adult ed class and was about to try it again, so decided I better review the techniques. I have to say, your drawings are impeccable and your finished product is spectacular. I am inspired!
Love this painting and your pouring demonstration. I like your dog's name, too. You are simply delightful and I enjoy your demos very much.
Art teacher here:) I love colours and I do more acrylic and oil paintings but you have inspired me to try this on a smaller scale. I have used masking tape so far to only preserve white. This reminds me a lot of the same principles as waxing for batik. Thank you so much for sharing. It was magical!:)
Beautiful work of art, Leslie. I've seen others that pour the paint but they didn't have an underdrawing, just created art from whatever happened on the paper. I really liked the process you used and I am going to subscribe in hopes of seeing more of your work. tfs, Sandra
Yes, please try it. It is sooooo much fun and a wonderful surprise at the end.
Absolutely amazing. It is such a delight to simply watch the the whole process. The end result was outstanding. Thanx for sharing.
Those are multiple layers of masking fluid and poured paint. I think by that point what Leslie had done was
1) applied mask to preserve strongest highlights as white
2) poured her lightest colors and waited for them to dry
3) applied a second layer of mask to preserve lighter midtones
4) repeat: pour again, dry again, mask again
And she repeats those steps several more times. The time spent drawing and masking is almost certainly a few hours of work and isn't shown here.
This gives me new appreciation for the patient persistent labor that produces such intense layers of naturally blended color.
Nice video. VERY nice painting.
Love the doggy comments and the name "Twilight." Just as the question crossed my mind, you answered: "Yes, I have a teenage daughter!" and I did indeed laugh out loud!
Wow... brilliant work Leslie.
That is INCREDIBLE!
Pouring really is so much fun. I love the control of the masking and the spontaneity of flowing paint.
Thanks for the question Donna. It is Winsor & Newton Art Masking fluid. I find that it is the best and the easiest to find.
Leslie! I love the finished result !! and I can´t imagine when I saw the begging how it gonna finish!! Amazing work! lovely color squeam!
this is something I would of never thought of doing...fun n unique idea....Osiyo!!
Crikey, that is fantastic, you are so brave and patient. Thank you for sharing your technique.
this is stunning! i hope you have many more years of happy painting! its gorgeous
Good idea! I never thought that this would receive as much attention as it has. Glad you enjoyed it.
amazing work! bellisimo! and thanks for filming some of your techniques very helpful!
Yes, thank you for answering Sarah's question. I have been in the studio painting. Hope you get another keyboard soon!
Wow this is really gorgeous! I've gotta try this technique! 😃Thanks for the inspiration 🙏
your work is absolutely stunning..........thanks for sharing..........barb UK
Stunning art...I love the freedom this method gives you!!! I would love to try this myself...on a more modest scale...just to enjoy the experience!!! Looking forward to seeing more of your beautiful works!!!
Geez this is gorgeous!! So much work and planning!
Wow! So beautiful! Thank you for sharing this technique. I really enjoyed watching you work and appreciate all the explanations along the way. Absolutely beautiful!
Thank you so much for sharing this. So inspiring. I must try this on a smaller scale. Please post some more....
Stunning. Thank you for sharing!
My arms started to hurt for you half way lol ,beautiful painting!
Heather
oh my..beautiful !!! Thank you for sharing.
Glad you enjoyed it! Definitely give it a try.
OMG you are amazing... I will never be able to do this because I am not that skilled but I subscribed anyway because I simply loved watching.
Ms. Leslie~ When you remove the masking fluid, I would think it removes all the layers...or does it dry and stick to the paper? I thought the finished product would just have huge splotches of white, so I was amazed by the end too! That is amazing...you should be my teacher :P
So with the masking you have to mask light to dark value and add color in progression from low to high saturation. Beautiful work. Thank you for the tips.
Wow! Gorgeous!!!
Omg you are a genius, truly a masterpiece. You make it look effortless. Its has inspired me to get some masking fluid, I could never achieve this skill level though. Thanks for sharing your video, maybe in the future you could do a demo on masking, perhaps on colored paper to differentiate the two. Tyvvm, just beautiful..
angela mackay great idea about the masking! I will have to do that
This is incredible!!!
It never occurred to me that pouring could be done so many times! What a wonderful lesson!!! Thank you Thank you. Nice large size and your results are incredible. I have a question about the start: Did you stat with a drawing or a B&W print of a photo on watercolor paper? So many details!!! You have inspired me to try it myself.
Thanks again,
JG
I have just started getting into water colors and you are very inspiring thanks
Will this work with 140 lb. 300 is soooo expensive! Did you 'learn' this techinique from college, a teacher or discover... this is so fabulous... I have a video of Nicholas Simmons who pours but your time to share this is sooo generous and helpful.. I can't wait to do this with young artist's and of course myself. I love love watercolor. Salute you dear lady!!!!
Stunning work, thanks for sharing it:)
please excuse me here, but I really am not clear if you actually drew this whole painting or is it a picture blown up (seems too large for this)..........sorry just had to ask.................you are an incredible artist, thank you so much for fabulous lesson..................barb UK
Leslie, this was amazing. I never saw colors poured and the final painting is so beautiful. I am taking a watercolor technique class and I am wondering if he will touch on this. Beautiful job.
This is awesome! Lovely work.
I did stretch the paper before I started to pour. As for brown, it can be achieved through layers of color. I would suggest making an orange in one pour and then in the next pour, pour blue onto of that.
That's so cool! You're an amazing artist.
AaronfromQueens got the process correct. Thank you Aaron!
I do mix tube paint with water. The first layer is the lightest color of paint and I build up the saturation of the paint with each pour.
Leslie - this is the first video of yours that I have ever seen and I just LOVE the way this painting came out! I follow you on Instagram and of course I have your wonderful book 365 Days of Watercolor. Thanks again for being my favorite college art teacher 😉 💝 Melissa Melvin Art 🎨
Melissa Melvin thank you for watching and for buying my book! Hope you continue to have fun and enjoy the process!
Yes, you can stretch paper after you've applied masking fluid.
How many years of practice?? Wow! Exceptional!!!
damn...after the 3rd pour i was starting to think this woman's crazy...but it was well worth it...
Wow! The results are amazing. But the process is so involved. I peobably don't have the patience and energy to do all those maskings.
Wow, I had never seen this before! I'm definitely impressed and want to try this out sometime. :D
Abigail, I used Arches 300lb cold press paper and peeled off the dried masking fluid at the end.
such an amazing work!
Beautifull! thanks for sharing this, you are a great artisit!
I like this. Thanks for sharing
oh my god, that's really pretty
Espectacular. Gràcies per la demostració!
Thank you Sandra. I hope to get more done.
i was just gonna inquire about this, thanks lol im sure you answered a lot of peoples questions =)
your art is stunning!
I think that your work is just stunning! I am amazed by technikque you use and very interesting in using one. I am a student of architecture so, I would be very grateful if you would explane to us how did you got your backround (sketch- previous proces )? Thanks in advance for your time. Keep inspiring us, you are doing a great job.Greetings from Serbia !
Thanks Nikki. I peeled the dried masking fluid off at the end. I use masking fluid to save either the white of the paper or the paint while I pour paint onto other areas. Once I have saved everything I wanted to save and poured all my layers of color, I peel off the masking fluid to reveal my painting. It is Winsor & Newton Art Masking Fluid that I used.
Beautiful!!!
Thanks Danica! I use Photoshop to work out my sketches from photos, combining, rearranging and simplifying. Then once design issues are figured out, I just trace it onto my paper.
Wonderful, thank you for sharing
I did stretch the paper. It is 300lb cold press and I soaked it for a few minutes in cold water then stapled it to a board. Staining colors are best for pours so try to use a brown that stains or mix up a brown from colors that do stain.
It’s a great effect. Could this not be achieved with brushed washes?
Beautiful work
That is amazing! Wow. I've never seen anything like that. I'd love to see more on how you mask at the different levels. do you have any videos on that?
Thank you mxikna! I try to keep my warm colors around my focal point and use cool colors as I move away from the focal point. Other than that, the color goes where it wants to go. I really don't have any idea how it will turn out until I pull the mask up.
I usually mask during the day, pour in the afternoon, and let it dry overnight. You can use a hair dryer to dry it but that will lighten the color.
wow, that was perfect
i have never seen this technique before and i really love it
how could i learn more about it??
did u take classes or something??
congrats and please post more vids , they are awesome
---Alex---
@janetartist Thank you Janet! I am glad you enjoyed the video and I hope that you are able to have success with your pours. It can be difficult to figure out what to mask but is sooo much fun!
Fascinating!
Very inspiring!
I am not sure about confidence but I certainly enjoy experimenting. I used a ruling pen and a brush dipped in soapy water to apply the masking fluid. It is best to use Winsor & Newton masking fluid and good paper (100% cotton) so the paper won't rip. And yes, I do teach classes. Most are in Canada but occasionally I teach in the US. My workshops are listed on my website.
question for you: after each layer of pouring why do you mask each time?! I'm curious. It turned out lovely!!!
Thank you! I hope you get a chance to do some pouring of your own.
I will have to check it out then. Thank you!
Yes, I do use the masking fluid to get the detail. I use a ruling pen, which is a type of drafting tool, to apply the mask. I can get really fine lines with it.
When you remove the masking fluid how do you keep it from pulling up the color underneath?I have tried this pouring technique put keep losing the beautiful pigment.
It is Winsor and Newton masking fluid. I use a ruling pen and a brush to apply it.
Amazing!
