When I was in school back in the 70's and early 80's, my elementary and junior high schools had Fire-Lite control panels and Simplex buzzers (40xx models). The classrooms in the new wing at the junior high school were open air architecture so, you could be sitting underneath a buzzer, or, have one in your direct line of sight. The buzzers were mounted inside Space Age Electronics AV32 enclosures complete with a double projector attachment. Needless to say, fire alarm systems have come quite a ways since then.
When I was a freshman in high school 10 years ago, we had a fire drill and the fire department showed up and the principal told the fire fighters that it was a drill. The fire alarms went off 2 more times that day but they weren’t drills. I think someone called in a bomb threat also. The school also went into lockdown all in the same day.
I remember a few times that instead of a regular mandatory fire drill as required by law, and going back to my days of high school in New Jersey, sometime within the past decade or two, we actually had a few lockdowns despite being from a relatively safe area where I attended high school. However, we didn’t always go outside just because there may have not been a fire drill. Sometimes, we actually went outside, but other times, we were ordered to take shelter in a small dark room after turning off classroom lights and remain silent while security was searching the halls and investigating anything suspicious that may have happened where and when it did. Basically, we not only our regular fire drills. We sometimes had a code red, code yellow, etc. system that would be conducted so that as soon as the principal announces when the code practice was lifted, we had the all-clear signal to go back to our normal day of classes.
i have seen 2 fire alarm responses. both were at my school and both weren't a drill. 1 was when my school lit on fire in kindergarten (they didnt even close school to do a inspection to make sure it was safe) they also made us go in while the school was still smoldering. the 2nd was when some kid pulled the fire alarm in the rain.
I used to see it all the time when I was in high school, but that was because the fire alarm system was faulty (one week it kept going off all times of the day and night and they finally told us to ignore it unless otherwise told). They ended up replacing the whole system my senior year. I've seen it a few times at the hospital I used to work at too, one time because the chef set off the kitchen suppression system.
Yeah I had those at my HS...Made the mistake of sitting directly under a GEC4 on a fire drill day. Yes the horns were active in classrooms as well as hallways
To the people saying it need a sync module, these panels can be a bit confusing with programming. It requires you to map fire drill to sync. They enabled sync for manual pull, smoke, and waterflow, that may have been what they forgot
My school has a mix of Gentex GOS Sounder/Strobes, Gentex Commander 3's, Gentex GXS Strobes, Gentex SHG Horn Strobes, Gentex Commander 2 Strobes, System Sensor SpectrAlert P1224MC Horn Strobes, System Sensor SpectrAlert Advance PC4R Horn Strobes, Wheelock E70 Speaker Strobes, Wheelock RSS Strobes & Wheelock MT Horn Strobes. I can't tell exactly, but does that TV screen at 0:31 say "ALERT" or something? It would be really cool if they synced an alert notice on all the screens to the fire alarm system. My college has a system that displays warning messages on all computer and TV screens when there's a campus wide emergency, but it's not hooked to the fire alarm system...
That panel is not programmed correctly, the horn.strobes should be synced, it is a simple programming change, I would call your installation company and have this corrected.
I've actually had a couple of alarms that went off. The first was when a kid pulled it and the pull station was still active, so in this case they tried to reset it and the alarm happened in my class, but then I told them " Come reset the pull station, before you reset. Another was when the Truealerts at my school started flashing for about 1 minute then the horns went of it was traced to an alarm that shorted. But now, the 4100U has 2 trouble and 1 Supvizory present, and its been there for 10 months.
Keith Pierce same too back in elementary someone pulled the fire alarm at eastern Wayne elementary school all of the EST genies alarms and celling mounted est alarms went off and there was 4 fire trucks came to my school
Safeman4202 Yeah. It happened at my school too when my school forgot to call the monitoring station. It resulted in three trucks and a cop car showing up. It may seem funny at first, but in a way that’s a false alarm right there because while you may have forgotten, the fire department has to respond. So God forbid something bad actually did happen and they couldn’t get there in time, that could still be the school’s fault while it’s still accidental. You may have meant to call them, but if you forget and then pull the alarm, be prepared for trouble.
Don’t you hate when someone pulls the fire alarm, and you have to evacuate the building and wait for the fire department to show up? That happened in the winter once to me.
It needs a Sync module or Set on Gentex Sync and is a NFPA Code Violation because the strobe and horn are unsynced that causes confusion because of the Unsynced horn and People with Photosensitive Epilepsy may have a seizure due to the Unsynced strobes the pattern of code 3 is 0.5 Seconds On, 0.5 Seconds off 3 times then stop 1.5 seconds then Repeats over and over
Great video! Is that the school's only panel? Reason I'm asking is because I also have an SK-5700 and it allows a maximum of 50-100 devices. That doesn't seem enough for a high school .Unless the high school's system was converted from a conventional system and just the panel was replaced, it doesn't make sense to have that panel vs an SK-5808 or SK-5820XL
Odd that the panel calls the central station for a drill. Part of the reason manufacturers design a drill feature is so that you can do a fire drill without accidentally activating the dialer or having to disconnect city boxes.
Yeah. Most of our newer campus buildings have the drill mode. Our older buildings require our maintenance personnel to use a key to open a pull station. Regardless, we always have our system offline unless it’s a real fire.
Did that panel have a manaul Evac? I have the same panel in my school always turn off the fire alarm dialer before doing a drill of it is not a drill then u know what to do. But fire dept should not have responded if you manul evac fire dept wont be called if you want to use the pull station THEN TURN OFF THE FIRE ALARM DIALER And I saw you press 1 and select that should not set it off im sorry if i missed something please tell me but yeah.
this school needs something to sync them together. my teacher put a poptart in the microwave for 20 minutes and caused a 45 minute evacuation and the fire department showed up.
Not unless the call resulted in someone getting hurt I’d the FD couldn’t respond fast enough. It’s bad, but it’s even worse if someone needs help and they’re tied up with a false alarm.
I have the commander 3's at my school and theres a long beep that sounds before the drill starts but the alarms dont sound at the same time, they are pretty much out of sync and kinda worse than that sync.
The reason why the fire department showed up when you used the "Drill" function (Panel screen saying: "Fire Drill In progress, 10 Minutes Remaining, Press any key to stop".) Is because the alarm LED light on the panel is flashing because the system is a normal fire alarm condition which means the fire department will respond unless if you put your system on test mode. If the alamr LED light on the panel isn't flashing as it's just off when you use a drill function or drill button on a fire alarm control panel then the system is not in a normal fire alarm condition and juts activates the NACs (Notification Appliance Circuits) to sound and flash everything without the fire department showing because this isn't a normal fire alarm and just a fire drill or fire alarm test executed from the fire drill button or function on the system without a normal fire alarm condition as the alarm LED light isn't flashing and just off
Fire Alarm Favorites Well, you should say something about it. Maybe remind the custodian/janitor to take the system offline. These poor firemen have the belief there’s something wrong, and they have to respond every month. It costs money to run those units. Not to mention if someone gets hurt in a real emergency, Lord knows what would happen next.
Last year, my school had like 3 false alarms.. one was something in the cafeteria, another was in the science wing, and last I think a teacher burnt popcorn and set it off... (we walked in and smelt burnt popcorn)
It happened in my Middle School Year back in September 19, 2013 right after September 18's Fire Drill practice that we did until the 19th comes after I arrived at my middle school I saw everybody evacuating the school building at the beginning of the school day when I knew that somebody pulled the fire alarm and then the fire department responded they found out that it was a water problem that my school was having that's the issue why the fire alarm is going off!
Alexanders Adventures - Channel Deactive Nope, not always. You’re not alone with that misconception. The safest thing to do is to ALWAYS notify your company before conducting a drill.
I hate when that happens at my sister job I help out with the fire drills sometimes but this time we did a drill and we called them to put it test mode After Breakfast because breakfast is fast so when we did the drill we did it then the fire department came to the call and seid thare was a Activation in the Building so we told them that we called the place to put it in test mode After they came we called the place and they seid the forgot to disarm the system
Sam Luo It depends. The most common method is to use a key to open a pull station to sound the alarm. While the drill button is effective, it may not activate every part of the fire alarm system. This could be disadvantageous, though, as you want the system to work effectively when a real fire happens. So I think pull stations are better. You can also pull the lever on the station and then reset it with a key. Another disadvantage with the drill feature is, as you saw, it does not always disable the call feature. Rather than assume the system will not dispatch the fire department, it’s safer to notify the monitoring company ahead of time in case something goes wrong.
I thought drill disabled the dialert? Great video 😀👍👍 What do you know about a Siemens XLS- Fyrefyder (some name like that) system. The have it at my high school and it’s been having MAJOR issues lately (I know it’s a card base panel too!).
The reason why the fire dept showed up when you used the "Drill" function (Pannel screen saying: "Fire Drill In progress, 10 Minutes Remaining, Press any key to stop".) on the pannel is because this pannel has a relay switch that will activate the dialer when the pannel goes into alarm which means any function on the pannel that sets the pannel into alarm with also a pull station or smoke/heat detector being activated. Normal fire alarm pannels that have a "Drill" button (Pannel screen saying: "Evac in system") and not a "Drill" function (Pannel screen saying: "Fire Drill In progress, 10 Minutes Remaining, Press any key to stop".) won't activate the dialer because the "Drill" button (Pannel screen saying: "Evac in system") will program the pannel to go into alarm without the relay switch activating the dialer.
That’s actually not a good thing if you think about it. People in danger rely on these services to help them in a dangerous situation. In terms of sync, all they need to do is enable Gentex Sync Protocol on each NAC. Most modern “By Honeywell” branded panels have that feature.
