Considering DDR4 chips themselves cost mere pennies at bulk from the manufacturer; The prices some companies charge for extra RAM in a soldered system is infuriating.
Well there is more to it than just the chip cost in bulk, as well as defining just how bulk you are talking for each - if you expect to ship a million 2GB models for every 50 8GB those 8GB chips are not being ordered in real bulk. Then every different sku you offer means setting up separate production lines, inventory storage for both the alternative parts you are using and the final product, new testing and verification to do, so it isn't entirely unjustified. Not that I really disagree either, many company really are scumbags around this charging massively more than it would cost to get the bigger chips and pay for your nearest repair shop to replace them for you (assuming you don't have the tools/skill yourself)...
I've worked for a global corporation for 12 years now. The longer I've been exposed to big business the more I've realised most people are clueless to how business really operates. "it's just a few more pennies" doesn't even begin to address what's going on to make such decisions. I ain't carrying water for big business either, but there are alot of realities people just don't get. A good analogy is motor vehicle production, a top model costs "pennies on the dollar" more to produce then a base model, so why even make them? just sell top models. Answer that question and you start to understand what's going on .
Not really pennies per chip... today's spot price for 16 Gbit DDR4 chips was around $3.50. And the board designer and manufacturer still needs to pay for R&D, manufacturing, distribution, etc., and make a realistic operating margin. Yes, some (thinking Apple) charge over the odds, but I feel that Raspberry Pi are very fair with their pricing.
for the 45/50 price model discussion, I follow the game strategy. $30, 40, 50, etc., as long as the RPi Org doesn't consider themselves AAA and charge $90 for a Pi to go with the same analogy. edit: BABY?! Congrats! _passes around fake cigars_
The new Pi 5 2GB also introduced a new 'stepping' (new silicon revision) for the BCM2711 SoC. So far I haven't seen any evidence it makes a difference day-to-day or for overclocking... but I'll keep my eyes open and test when I get one. If I find anything of note, I'll definitely make a video on it!
Congrats on the baby and can't wait for future videos! Baby will always be more important than meeting a release schedule and everyone who watches you will understand!
Congrats on the new baby ! the difference between 2GB and 4GB is £11 exactly in the UK. I'm not planning to buy a pi5 anytime soon but if I was buying I think I'd still go for the 4GB model. If I already invested £46.60, I could squeeze a little more to get 4GB for £57.60. That's my opinion though, that's still about 24% price increase from 2GB to 4GB. I think it would make a significant difference in bulk buy.
@@oninbridders Sure, thanks for letting me know. My comment is about my opinion on decision-making while trying to choose between buying the Pi5 2GB and Pi5 4GB models. I didn't mention anything about the Pi4.
Take the time you need to support your wife and baby and family! We love and you and will still be here when you have more time again 😊 CONGRATULATIONS!!!! 🎊🍾🎉
Congrats on bringing a new Geerling into the world!! Man, they’ll have an awesome dad to teach so much cool stuff, if that’s what they take after, like what we come to your videos for. I wish I could do half as much for my kids.
Congratulations to you and your family Jeff! My second son was born just two weeks ago, hope everything goes well and have fun missing the days of sleep 😅
The real good news here is the baby. Best of wishes for your family! The 2G Pi 5 could be interesting for smaller projects or as replacement for my Pi 2 with dietpi. Keep an eye on it.
Congrats and best wishes as you await the arrival of your little one! My wife just had our firstborn a few days ago. Also, Radxa sent over an X4 for me to review. What an incredible coincidence 😄.
Congratulations Jeff! Wish you and the family the best of health, take all the time you need off; you've been relentless with the video schedule even when you had some health issues. Looking forward to the Positron video, the KVM and case tests; but whenever they're ready, no rush. Personally I just 3D print cases for my Pis, or get the cheapest heatsink cases with small fans; I hope Argon do an EON NAS case update for Pi5 now with the PCIE slot, and price it somewhat reasonably (It doesn't need to be a cast aluminium case or whatever that was).
Congrats, m8. Use whatever time needed for the little one, and make sure your wife doesn't feel neglegted in any way. Family is way more important than anything else! Best regarde to all of you!
Congradulatiopns on the kiddo!! take time for the family!! please we can wait. I swear, your health and your family is WAY more important than us youtube nerds. haha Much love Jeff and CONGRATS!!!
Congratulations on the new baby, Jeff! I've got a couple of places where a non-desktop Pi 5 is desirable, and that new 2Gb Pi sounds like it would be a good fit (but yeah, I'd like it to be $5 cheaper, too).
Congrats on the upcoming extension to the family! I know you make income from TH-cam, so saying "take your time with the videos" isn't always a useful thing to say, but I hope you're able to spend the time with family and relax.
Babies are like USPS: they get there when they get there, nobody knows when. Too bad you can't stick a tracking label on 'em for a better delivery estimate!
That thing is a brick, very solid. EDAtec does some great builds; they're usually a little expensive, but engineered quite well. I have a couple touchscreen controllers I've been meaning to test too!
Hi Jeff, congrats on the new baby! I'm really interested in the radio stuff you do with the SDR, so when things settle down, can you please make a video about that?
A new Baby Pi? Congrats!! Regarding Pi pricing, a new Pi4 2GB was $45 (June 2019). Checking an “inflation calculator” makes it the equivalent to $55 (2024). So Pi5 2GB at $50 (2024) is only half-inflated, or would be just $41 in 2019 money. BTW: Diapers and inflation .. they both stink, but are a necessity to the joy of life.
I know the RPi is more powerful than ever and they have the RPi Pico series as a super budget alternative now, but I really miss the RPI Gen1 price tag of under $30 for everything you need (sd card, power supply, etc)
Their pricing is consistent. The Pi 5 has been $5 more than the equivalent Pi 4 model since it was initially released. The Pi 4 is very capable, while the Pi 5 is a beast... $5 premium isn't that much for the performance improvement. Congrats on the expanding family! 🙂
I agree on the price. It’s £46,60 here, so the equivalent of $60.50 including VAT but not delivery. That too much just to buy for a spare without having a plan.
Could I suggest perhaps a Poll on what vendor items you have on hand and let the community vote on what they'd like to see you review next? (Couldn't hurt your channel engagement either 😉)
gone be honest, don't know if i personally see the use case, better than paying 90$ for a 8gig model but I know how much memory costs and I feel like the difference cannot be 40$ :| I guess it's useful if you know you only need the 2gigs but need something that takes more processing then the pi4 can handle, I just don't think that exists?
Take the time for baby 🙏
We will always be here

$100-$120 16GB model would be interesting
16GB RAM chips are fairly pricey still, but it would be nice. They'd have to change the silkscreen and add a 16GB option in the ram resistor area!
Or a 2 Ohm on the 8GB spot. 😂
