I've been seeing a lot of people saying that this song is about Avril's relationship/breakup with Mod Sun but I actually think it's more about Nick's own personal struggles with drug addiction. I didn't really see it at first, but once I paid closer attention to lines like "My head's in the sky, but I'm falling backwards" and "I don't get high off you anymore," as well as seeing the STARFALL movie and several interviews with Nick, it's clear that the song's about recognizing your own detriment at the hands of substance abuse, but also being too afraid to show the people you love that you're suffering. I mean even the title itself is kind of a metaphor for what drugs can do to you. They can open your eyes "wide" to a lot of things, but at the same time "shut" them (and by extension, yourself) to your own pain, as well as those who care about and are concerned for you.
