The clock face was always mesmerizing
Fascinating pieces of history. Thanks for sharing!
When TV commercials were more entertaining than the shows.
We were lucky enough to get the Bop-tv signal where we lived.
I remember that very well as a kid . So sad that is all gone
The News Reader is Jan Snyman who was also a Sports commentator.
In 2 days time, this broadcast will be 40 years old. 🤯
That's today! 10 May 2024
Those were the days, my friend, we thought they'd never end...
Nobody accepting the 100km/h speed limit was funny xD
Two things.
First; The beautiful register and with the follows scenes from a country that (between the 50s and 80s) was something similar to a United Kingdom set in the plains of the American old west... or an ''Australia African'', so to speak...
Lastly.
The old regime was uneconomical in the way it was installed.
And it became financially unsustainable after the gold standard broke in 1971.
The South African government was slow to promote reforms in the country (only in the mid-1980s).
Even so, the old South African country deserves, on the other hand, sincere congratulations, for having saved Namibia from becoming a new Zimbabwe or Mozambique.
I was 514 days old when this was aired.
This broadcast is from Wednesday May 9th 1984 as the attempted assassination of Ghadaffi as well as Cpl. Denis Lortie shooting up the Quebec Parliament Building took place on Tuesday May 8th 1984
Before the rot
Love these.
Watching this as a Brit who also lived in Germany for a while, I'm struck by how similar the general approach to presentation this is to a European broadcaster of the time, I'd have expected something more American I guess. It's quite similar to ZDF, or one of the smaller UK ITV companies (that themselves didn't go in for US-style flashiness as much as say the big London or Birmingham companies) in many respects.
Also surprising how much Afrikaans I can make out, not knowing Dutch but passable in German.
There is a documentary somewhere about SABC's early TV days and they actually sent staff to the UK and Germany to learn about TV in 1975. South Africa actually used to very UK/Europe focussed back then. It's only now that all the Hollywood and US stuff floods SA. Sweeney for example was dubbed into Afrikaans and called Blitspatrollie.
I was in standard 6 (grade 8) in 1984. Back then it made no difference to me if I heard English or Afrikaans, in fact I often didn't realize which language was being used.
I had one cousin up on the Border as an Ops Medic, the other cousin had just klaared in, so I always watched the News for info on the Border War.
I was in standard 5
Is anyone else blown away that the SABC's Afrikaans service in 1984 included a jazz program? See 27:54
I love the retro content that you've been putting up. Do you have any recordings of TV2 and TV3 /CCV(the black channels) or Bop-TV?

Ongelooflik. Ek wens vrede sal altyd lewe.
OFCOURSE it is about obtaining American Weapons
What are you on about?
@@Phansikhongolza just seeing that even those days it was about who can buy weapons from America in order for America to make money. War= Money…
@@KL-rc2le At this point South Africa was under an internal arms embargo and sanctions.
Wat is n skyfie? Sekerlik nie n bank kaart nie?
Haha wanneer die weervoorspelling n horror movie is.
What a dog's dinner they have made of a once beautiful country ??? There are NO winners in this ?
O didn’t know there were English people in South Africa in the apartheid days…according to history it was only Afrikaners…
Moron! We have always had both languages..
Gosh, early South African TV news was so boring - did we actually watch this?. Who is really interested in the egg price?.One thing that may be said: THE QUALITY OF SABC RADIO WAS WORLD CLASS FROM THE OUTSET. NOW BOTH ARE IN THE DOLDRUMS - UN - WATCHABLE AND UN - LISTENABLE.
Consider how common an ingredient eggs are in so many products
What was boring about it? It was informative and got to the point. What news is actually about.
Springbok Radio was wonderful !!!
