Did not work for Excel but however for PowerPoint and Word it work.
Please comment if you have a solution that works 100%

I’m sorry this didn’t work for Excel but I’m pleased it worked for PowerPoint. Hopefully another viewer will be able to help.

Tried all these steps. Complete fail. AutoSave is OFF. When I tell Excel for Mac (v16.78) to SAVE or SAVE AS, a dialog still pops up with OneDrive being the default. Last week, it defaulted to my desktop (where I want it). Microsoft gives a C+ effort to everything they do, and this is just one more proof of why they're awful.

You’re right - this should be easier to do and it should be a “sticky” setting.
