Sojourner 1 was HARD to make in ksp, its got a really funky shape that looks cool but is really difficult to accurately translate, I think I did a good job though.
Hats off to you this is a great Sojourner replica! I kinda feel like aerobraking it around Duna would have been a good idea for fuel savings seeing as there is actually no reason as to why Sojourner One in the show shouldn't have Aerobraked at Mars (stolen fuel or otherwise). I am pretty certain that Moon Surface> Moon Orbit> Mars Orbit (propulsive)> Mars Surface actually costs more than Mars Surface> Mars Orbit> Earth Eccentric Orbit> Moon Orbit> Moon Surface and the fact they couldn't spend a little extra fuel to "overtake" Phoenix and had to resort to the tiny solar sail means the craft had no margins for the trip out, and therefore probably is physically incapable of getting home. I can see the butchered aerodynamics of the hundreds of panels on your ship making that less than tenable though. Fully loaded can you even lift off from Duna? I can tell aswell that the robotics squishyness also would have caused issues in the testing. I do really appreciate that you noticed the fact that the aft lift engines fold up in that manner and don't slide up before the door closes (unfortunately they use the same model as the modified F-1s used as NTRS). The cut just before landing I suspect is also because of how embarrassing the pistons would make it look, but then all the same it didn't have some convenient rocks to mash the engines against. I seriously thought that you were gonna use wolfhounds inside the main engines' fairings but now that I think about it, you had no real choice but to use clusters of NERVs as all other engines would have been too small to slot in there. Glad you got rid of the side-not-doors it has to make it look shuttle like and the belly ramp (the latter probably just not being doable). Are you considering trying the sheer madness that is Mars 94 or not as I can see that being, problematic. Its nature as an Earth to Mars surface SSTO (yes, it has landing legs, I'll elaborate) might make it even more annoying to replicate than Sojourner, plus, spheres. It is "designed" to land as it has 4 landing leg pods, they have RCS on them, but the ship is designed to be rescued (and conveniently have pics of its engines taken) and not much else as the crew can't get to the ground and neither can the habitats (AKA reused Zvezda assets as they're the same model). No aft heat shield for butt-first reentry also poses an issue for it, meaning it might even play chicken with the ground going ball-first and then starship-flipping on 2 engines before igniting the other pair. Sorry for excessive comment length but I, unlike this video, am bad at cutting things down to be a reasonable length, and I like being thorough (I also have an unhealthy obsession with the show if you can't tell). Very nice job overall, same with the other FAM videos. 👍
i decided not to aerobrake mostly because i thought using the engines would be more interesting for the video lol. ngl i dont know if my sojourner could get home, i never tried haha. robotics where a big issue but there really wasnt much i could do about it, the entire thing bounced when it touched down which is why i had that cut. i noticed the engines fold like that mostly because of how many times i watched the scene in the show just to get the thing to look right. i actually used NERVs because the engines are supposed to be nuclear. i got rid of the belly ramp, as you guessed, because of robotic wobbliness. although i did try to get it to work i just couldnt, i ended up actually getting the kerbals out through the hatch at the top. i may try to make mars 94 but id want fitting music and im not too keen on re-using black hole sun as ive already used it here. anyways, thanks for the comment i appreciate it!
@@Salamander_co Didn't even consider the fact that Mars 94 wouldn't have a track that could accompany it. Maybe the belly ramp could have been made to work with a docking port at one end but then you'd need to fight KSP's busted hatch occlusion logic (literally my worst enemy). I too rewatched the sojourner one launch sequence a lot of times due to my unhealthy obsession with the show, but nothing can beat the amount of times I've put myself watching Apollo 24 break all logic and physics. Have you considered trying Waterfall with Stock Waterfall Effects? For Sojourner it's better you used the stock plumes as with waterfall you'd see the triple clustered NERVs inside the bells easily by their distinct plumes, ruining the effect, but for later craft I would suggest giving waterfall a shot as I think it improves performance a little and the exhausts are much more pretty.
@@JimmyBlether i tried waterfall before and it absolutely killed my performance haha, but i got a new pc since then so maybe i could give it another shot
Sojourner 1 is one of my favorite vehicles and after watching this video I felt like making another one but I have to hold back I already made 3 versions lol, really cool video and craft, really impressive!
This is a very accurate look of the Sojourner 1, and I’m generally impressed too. I’m surprised this didn’t lag your pc to hell, the part count looks large.
maybe, i dont really like using the same music more than once and i dont really know if theres any other music that would fit mars 94 other than black hole sun
