Loved his camo boat, all those 10+ pound bass out of a aluminum Jon boat…….now a days you have to have a $80k bass boat to catch 1 pounders lol.

I watched Doug Hannon back in the day... When I was just starting to understand what real bass fishing is. His snake lure was incredible!

Doug was our local hero. He was listed in the phone book and I'd call him up every once in a while. He sounded a lot different than the guy in the videos - talked real slow with lots of long pauses. Feeling uncomfortable, I'd quickly thank him for his time not to wear out my welcome, but he'd keep talking and answered all questions in detail. Honestly, one of the nicest guys ever. Doug shows a two hook version of this in his "catch bass" book, using small bait holder hooks, later teaming up with burke lures with a single/long bend hook. If rigged adequately, it looks pretty nature but if rigged perfectly, it takes on an almost magical quality. The illusion is that you don't see the twirling motion and the lure only appears to making a side to side motion when looking at it in the water.

Randy, thank you for this tip, I tried it on my local hole where there are some big girls, and lots of pond weed / grass. I caught fish 10 out 15 casts. And most of them were quality sized fish. I had no problem with it getting snagged as the action protects it from getting fouled mostly. It's a fun bit too, they meant business when they hit the lure.

He started talking fishing and even rigged Me up 5 of those swimming worms. There was no doubt He was incredibly intelligent about a lot more than just fishing. Thanks for bringing the memories back.

What a great source of knowledge from, as you said, "a man way ahead of his time".
If I remember correctly, he was a fisheries biologist.
I saw him on In-Fisherman every Saturday morning back in the day.
I learned a great deal about bass behavior from his talks.
Miss him dearly to this day.

Excellent video - Thanks! I used the swimming worm for many years back in the 80's and I can tell you, it flat out works. However, I prefer using it on a med-heavy 7' spinning rod with 10# test line. Gives me better control over my cast. I've taken 2 bass approaching the 10# mark and this rig has performed flawlessly. Thanks again.

Thank you Randy for posting this video! I had the pleasure of fishing with Doug Hannon when I was 13 years old at what is now called Lake Miami Garcia. He was in town to fish the Stick Marsh and my father happened to run into him at a pizza joint out by I-95, and they set up a fishing trip. My dad let me skip school to go fishing with him! I still have a picture frame of me and Doug Hannon shaking hands in his aluminum boat when I was 13 in 1992. Yes, he passed away way too soon. Thank you Randy for sharing this. If anyone wants to see the action of the swimming worm, just search Doug Hannon on youtube and you can find it 1985, 1986. Thanks again Randy!

I remember Hannon's swimming worm! Beside his big Rapala, and a Ditto Gatortail worm (just like the one Larry Nixon said "Oh My God!" as his MegaBucks monster jumped), it was a Central Florida big bass staple. Next came the trick worm; merthiolate or white, with Tom Mann Jr mopping up GA spotted bass. I also remember a tall, young angler from Joplin, MO named Randy!

I absolutely love this video. Doug Hannon was the reason I started pursuing big largemouth bass. From 14 to 20 years old, I never caught one over 4 pounds and after reading about Doug and then following up on his style of fishing in 1990, I caught my first 10-pounder. I was hooked at pursuing only the big ones. I will never catch those incredible numbers of 10+ pound fish like Doug and some others, but am fortunate to have over 20 10+ pound bass to my credit.

I have a friend (Dallas Johnson) here in Tallahassee, Florida that introduced me to a rig similar to this in the 70s.. He called it the Humpa Worn.. We rigged it similar to your rig, but we didn't thread the hook all the way through as you did. We did use the swivel about 18" about the hook and just ran the hook in about and inch, and the back out and kinda created a hump in the worm so when your reeled it in, it. would spin over and over causing the same motion you're referring too.. Man, we caught bass as fast as you could throw it out.. Being was new to pass fishing, I was just beside my self.. I still on occasions use that rig when my health issues allow me to get and wet a line..It's something you never forget, something an advid Bass Fisherman teaches you..Tks for the bid... It

You know Randy the Bass Professor Doug Hanna was one of the best. Do you Remember John Fox fishing show it was another great bass fishing show. I still have some lew’s pistols grip rods with the BB 1 reels. Plus some ambassador 5000 and 5000c reels some with with the old cotton Cordell and Gator grip power handles. Oh by the way we call that a whirly worm. I worked part time with Ed Chambers at Zoom Bait back in the late 70s and early 80 I was the guy that came up with the color Gord Green that was used in many of the different styles of worms. Ed was one of the best people I ever work with and for. I only live about two mile from there. Eddie Wortham more less run and Manages Zoom now.

I have used a swimming worm since the mid 80's and our rig used 2 hooks about 5'' apart the top hook is a 1/0 and the bottom hook is a #4bait holder . you thread the top hook normal like a jig hook and raise the worm slightly and put the bottom hook through kinda like you hook a whacky worm , use a swivel about 12" above the bait and it spins . if you can see it from above it looks just like a snake swimming through the water , I cant tell you how many smallmouth i have caught using this worm , when I wade the river it is the only lure I bring and it out fishes most other baits . and I only use floating worms or trick worms.

I can’t believe u told this secret!!!! i’ve also used this rig night fishing on clear water lakes around boat docks and grass. During the spawn till late summer. Also I’ve done jerk-jerk pause and just twitching it around shallow cover. If the fish are a little deeper I will use a thicker wire hook to get it to sink faster. Never used a straight tail worm.. I’ll definitely try it. I’ve used from 6” to 12” worms Culprit and the old Riverside big wag worms. I’ve caught a lot of quality fish on this. Thanks for the great content.

Randy can you do a video on how manmade impoundments age and change over time. Got a 20 year old, smallish, water company lake near me with some good fish and a lot of flooded standing timber in it. The flooded pine tree stands in the small pockets and drains are hard to fish cause half the trees have rotted and fallen over, laying on the next tree. Very few alleys to cast in. I've tried topwaters, jerkbaits, and vertical presentations with middling success.

Lol Randy - I’m ok with you sharing your secrets, but now you’re sharing mine too!! Learned this from a Sports Afield or Outdoor Life article back in the 70’s. The spinning worm. Purple Creme Scoundrel on a 0/1 Eagle Claw with curve in worm to cause spin. Fished with back to back snap swivels. Nailed loads of smb at church camp. Corkscrew motion in 2 D silhouette looks like a baby snake slithering.

Charles Ellis I like all of your tips I still fish the swimming worm l learned how from Doug I would like to see you give tips on how important it is to hold a bass with out hurting the bass lower jaw Doug was very aware that you could harm a bass by the way you land one and release it Doug was one of kind he thought me how l caught 3 10 lbers in one day I am 75 years now but I still like to catch bass

I had to double check it was June 1st and not April 1st. I never would’ve thought swimming a crooked spinning worm would work!

In the late 50's early 60's I used to fish the cream rigged worm (with the beads and prop) adjusted so it would spin when retrieved. It looked like a snake swimming. Caught lots of bass in the sloughs of Shoal Creek.

I bet Doug would love the Megabass line up today... probably the big swimbaits too.

Used to watch Doug all the time and I've used this rig set up, and it absolutely will catch big fish. It looks like an eel or snake going through the water .

Interesting rig there Randy, we throw swimming worms but not necessarily like this.. Normally just a big ribbon tail with a 1/16 pegged sinker.
