    Thanks for watching! I know this is something a LOT of you have requested and we've been trying to make it happen behind the scenes for months. We wanted to have the original 4 who reviewed the trailer for this panel but given that reviewing a TV show is much more of a time commitment than even a movie, it ended up causing a lot of delays due to everyone's busy schedules. We didn't want to put it off any longer so we're doing the review now with Madison filling in for Renee, since a lot of you liked her in the Silence review and wanted us to bring her back. :)
    Also, I have been listening to those of you who felt that the reviews were too long when they were running close to an hour...I'm editing them now to be around 20 minutes each.
    -David

      Thank - thank - THANK YOU for doing this. I was starting to lose hope that you'd actually review the whole series. I stumbled across your trailer review several months ago and left a scathing comment criticizing the panel. I was looking forward to the Young Pope miniseries for almost a year, and never missed an episode. I was upset that your panel was reviewing the trailer which seems like a bizarre thing to do for any film or series, but how flippantly the panel dismissed this expertly crafted work of fiction really got under my skin. I think this show had some poignant things to say about far more than Catholicism, and that you will all really enjoy watching it.
      I have to say I enjoyed this review tremendously as I am keen to know what a pack of Catholic Millennials think about this show. I'm not here to judge what you think about it, as long as its considerate and well reasoned, I'm here to understand a work of fiction I like from a different perspective. I wonder if it wouldn't be beneficial for you guys to view the episode separately. I have a feeling that watching it together may distract you from important imagery/dialogue, and being surrounded by friends may effect your perception of the series. I'll be in the front row for all 5 episodes. Again, I really appreciate you guys reviewing this I suspect that you really didn't want to and were maybe even a bit uncomfortable doing it. But the show is good if you stick with it, and I don't think there is anything in it that might cause such offense or affront to your faith that it would inhibit your enjoyment. Peace guys. J

      The Young Pope was surprisingly sympathetic to traditional Catholicism. Pretty refreshing. Jude Law played the role masterfully.

    Pope Pius was underlining the need to remove the celebrity of his position. In other words, humility. That is the conflict. The Catholic Church has to function in a secular and political context, and how much faith actually still informs its actions, rather than the need to maintain and propogate its institutional power. Saving the Faith is not the equal of saving the Church. The Church is a tool for the Faith to spread and, it is not one and the same. The Church is the means, but the Faith - the message of Jesus - is the ends. Does the ends justify the means?

    • @solberg7049
      @solberg7049 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No. The church is not just the structure of the vatican, the church is the combined people of God. Faith is not the end and the church the means, the church is rather the collective body of all those who are faithful. Faith means nothing if it is not also lived out.

      Stay with God. Do not stray off the path. Remember that when you call God and Jesus into you life many evil spirits follow. They love to test those who love God and Jesus. If you are tested just say this. Get away from me Satan and his demons, in the Name Of Jesus Christ, LEAVE. You may have to say this a few times. It is only when you say it with TRUE CONVICTION that they will leave you.

      harrypotternerd27 It actually never disrespects the Church. Many times it praises and defends the church from all the blame it has received from the Godless world. It also presents the Church in its traditional splendor (i.e Latin Mass, traditional papal vestments, etc.), which has been lacking in the church today. I thoroughly enjoyed the series -- in spite of some scandalous scenes of course-- and recommend you to watch it.

    Really great discussion everyone! I'm really looking forward to the rest of your discussions on this show with the following episodes. A heads up, there are a lot of downright disturbing and cringe worthy scenes that are just unspeakable. BUT there are good things in the show that outweigh the negative, it's just a little difficult because the negative is indeed shocking, and if you get caught up in that distraction you'll see past some of the good (especially towards the end of the opening credits as the episodes progress, that really disturbed me, until I got to the point of just closing my eyes until it got back to the show to not completely put me off). I definitely thought it was intriguing, I wouldn't say I'm a fan of it, but I did like it despite the creator's motivations for it. It did provoke thought and reflection though which I appreciate. If anything to not get discouraged, the ending was really well done in my opinion, so look forward to that at least.
    Looking forward to more of your thoughts and discussions on it! Thanks again and God Bless!

    Oh man! I loved this series. As a Catholic it made me very uncomfortable at times but it also confirmed what I really didn't want to think the Vatican and Catholic Church is like - basically, a political entity with a few "true men of God" thrown in who really have a calling. I ended up surrendering and taking it all in as a great piece of entertainment. My faith lies in Jesus and that's where it'll stay.

    I find it unfortunate that they used a Catholic setting for the show because it is a purely secular show and can therefore give wrong ideas about the Catholic Church to a lot of people. Though I am not judging its artistic merit but its religious value because of the choice of Catholic theme for the show.

    • @tintinismybelgian
      @tintinismybelgian 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Lenny is seen doing miracles in later episodes of the show. I don't think that would work as well if the setting were changed to a more secular context (e.g., a corporation or a kingdom).

    • @titob.yotokojr.9337
      @titob.yotokojr.9337 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@tintinismybelgian
      Why wouldn't a secular setting work since it's obviously a secular show?!! Or if they wanted a religious setting, they could have used a fictitious non-sectarian religious organization. There are lots of those groups in existence, groups indistinguishable one from the other. In that way, they would not offend the religious sensibilities of one particular church.

    • @tintinismybelgian
      @tintinismybelgian 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@titob.yotokojr.9337 I explained why. *Miracles.* Lenny is portrayed as a literal saint who has performed literal miracles. In a secular setting, there would not be an equivalent to this.

    • @titob.yotokojr.9337
      @titob.yotokojr.9337 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@tintinismybelgian
      Your mention of miracles is why I suggested the use of non-Catholic groups as setting. If you watch telecasts of those groups' services, you see purported miracles happening right before your eyes. But it is obvious you did not read my reply at all. Thank you and goodbye.

    • @tintinismybelgian
      @tintinismybelgian 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sorry, I misread "sectarian" for "secular." In my mind, I had pictured that you were proposing a fictional religious-adjacent organization (e.g., something akin to the YMCA), as opposed to a fictional religious organization proper (e.g., something akin to a televangelist cult).
      However, the fact that Lenny does not make knowledge of these miracles public (indeed, he hesitates even to share the story about one with a dying man) would seem to differentiate him significantly from the leaders of those groups you mentioned.
      It is obvious that the makers of the show were trying to be provocative. To "offend people's religious sensibilities" was their creative aim and mission. To recreate a fictional religious organization with a historical and cultural heft equivalent to that of the Catholic Church would have been an impossible task on its own, and even if it could have been done, the idea that it would ruffle fewer feathers would be seen by the show creators as a negative, rather than a positive.

    I'm a Muslim, and I watched and enjoy this series, I would just like to point out that the Popes address in episode 2 is similar in inensity and content to every single Muslim sermon and that was really interesting for me to watch. I've always had this assumption that catholics especially in the west had a much more liberal standpoint and the more gentle accepting mindset. We Muslims have a strict religious code where even thinking can cause you to leave the religion. Its interesting to see that strict values are somewhat viewed as extreme in catholic societies. Anyways what do you think about me a Muslim guy watching a show probably aimed at Christians? Haha it was great though the young pope is intense.

    May I ask if you are all strict Catholics? Because the Ned guy is obviously 100% super gay. (Which I think is dope props to him) but I didn't know you guys were cool with that.

      What? There's nothing "dope" about being "100% super gay." What a strange (though no really) thing to say.
      And Ted's engaged - to a woman who he has been dating for two years.
      Also, what do you mean by "super strict"? These are the most common types of practicing Catholics. The first are those who try to live up to the standards of the Catholic Church and believe in its doctrines; the second are those who are Cafeteria Catholics who pick and choose doctrines to follow, mostly it has to do with sex and sexuality (go figure).

      Okay... I don't mean to offend. I was simply asking. And I mean Freddie mercury was married to a woman... and i'm fairly sure he was not straight. XD. Im just asking.

      Jenna McLaughlin gay as in happy? Sure. Gay as in sexuality? No. That's a modern day phenomenon. You know what's cool? Sky diving. Riding a long board. Euclid geometry.

    the show is just a mockery of the catholic church. interesting on some standards, but it's just a satirical view and not very accurate to the reality of papacy.
