  • After weeks of rain we finally got a break and had a chance to use the new Hoss Tools seeder in the garden. Conditions were far from ideal with damp, chunky soil but even so the new planter came through for us. Can’t wait to use it in a well prepared seed bed. For more information visit Hoss Tools at www.hosstools.com

    What is the right spacing for corn? Plants and rows?

    • @webcajun
      @webcajun  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sweet Corn will grow and produce as long as it’s not planted too close. My rows are 48 inches apart and spacing between plants average 6-12 inches. Rows can be closer…..Donald

    I watched the documentary Back to Eden, you can find it online for free, backtoedenfilm.com. Maybe you've already heard of it. Anyway, it's a method of gardening that relies heavily on wood chips as mulch. Curious to get your feedback on it. I've covered my entire vegetable garden with wood chips, so I water less and the soil builds it own natural fertility.

    • @webcajun
      @webcajun  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      ArmindaHeart I’ve watched the film and was impressed. The problem I see is the length of time (years) it would take before being ready to plant. It’s also my understanding that adding un-composted material to a garden robs needed nitrogen from the soil. I just have too many unanswered questions about this method……Donald

    • @darkwood777
      @darkwood777 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      ArmindaHeart Put wood chips and sawdust in a separate compost pile and let it decompose there for 2 or 3 years. It will safely break down. You can then add it to your garden. If you put wood directly in your garden you are starving your plants of nutrients, particularly nitrogen.

    • @ArmindaHeart
      @ArmindaHeart 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      webcajun This season, I simply spread the wood chips around my plants, on my pathways, and, well, everywhere. If you don't till your soil, it won't rob the soil of nitrogen. But there are even debates on that matter, whether it really does deplete the soil. The chips are supposed to return nutrients to the soil over time if you don't disturb it by tilling. But My plants are looking amazing so far! I just dig down the few inches of wood chips I placed down and the soil is moist, there is activity under there with the little worms and other guys digesting it, and I hardly ever have to water. It's really cool. So next year, I'll just rake away where I want to plant (put down some compost/soil if needed) and pop the seeds in. When they're big enough, I'll cover their bases up with the wood chips. I've mulched with several inches of hay too, which works the same way, but you can till that in. It helps with moisture retention, weeds, and the buggies love it. Basically, I hate weeds and I live in California, so mulching is a must for me :)

    • @ArmindaHeart
      @ArmindaHeart 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      webcajun Oh! and over the season, you wouldn't have to till because the wood chips really loosen up the soil by themselves, allowing plant roots to go down deep.

    The first thing I did when we closed our main garden and built raised beds, sold our seeder. Here in the wet springs of the PNW, skips were mostly due to maggots, especially on the beans. The new Hoss Seeder looks like the right tool for the job.

    • @webcajun
      @webcajun  9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      David Dube I was never impressed with the idea of raised beds until I built a couple and started using them. Now I’m only growing stuff that takes up lots of room in the regular garden and everything else in the beds. I
      built them 20 inches tall which works out great for me……Donald

    I wonder if the previous model seeder attachment wheel would do a better job pushing in loose dirt from the sides to cover the seed, being that it's wider and comes in contact with more dirt. might better move and flatten those round dried up pebble crumbs you get when rain turns the top of the soil all crusty. coulters look like a nice improvement... loving my wheel hoe and planter this spring in MN...not loving 37F tonite at the END of may ... thanks for the great videos webcajun

    Donald, always look forward to your videos. Old friend of mine use to put tape on some of his seed plates (maybe every other hole) to spread out the seed drop if they were planting to close. Seem to work ok.

    • @webcajun
      @webcajun  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      72blueflash Hoss does recommend doing that and it works real well. Because the seed bed was in such bad shape
      with wet clogs I didn’t think it was a good idea to decrease the number of seeds going in. I figure it’s easier to thin than to replant skips.…..Donald

      Thank you. I planted out my tomatoes (San Marzano's) 1 May this year. In less than 9 days they doubled in size. "Great" I'm thinking... Yesterday I noticed a little yellowing to the leaves of a few and the runt of the patch...Every leaf on it is up-turned and a little spotty.
      Because I'm using raised beds for the 1st time I'm keeping a real close eye on moister. They're needing watering about every three days. So I don't think it's that issue. The soil is the "three equal parts" Square Foot Method blend. And only after 10 days I doubt soil nutrition is a problem. Could it be Yellow Mosaic after only ten days? I did pick up a little aphid issue because of a Christmas Rose plant right next to the bed but I took care of that.
      I'm a little short of ideas on what it could be... Any help you might offer will be greatly appreciated.
      Thanx Donald.

      R W Glavin Since I don’t use sprays for disease my method is simple and probably not what you’re looking for. If
      I think a plant is diseased and may infect the others, I pull it and get it out of there. About the only thing I’ll spray for is bugs and that’s using Liquid Sevin. Sorry, I know this isn’t much help……Donald

      No nonsense. Save the many and spare the few. Makes sense to me. Thanx Donald.

    Why do you not add a ton of organic material and saw dust to your dirt, it would
    never get hard, and you probably have a lot of material to use around there.

      MrMac5150 Sawdust decomposition sucks all the nitrogen out of your soil.

      MrMac5150 Why spend the money on added N? Like throwing money away.

      Just by adding ground leaves, left over by products from yard waste, would enhance his top soil 100 percent, plus attract worms to the location.
