  • Planting continues in our garden - Katriel and Tim decide to plant more sweet corn using our Hoss Garden Seeder. Johnny tilled the garden first making it easy to push the seeder down the row! Corn (Syngetha Aspire: 4thegrower.com).

      +Tractor Therapy was just thinking about you. Trying to decide if Adobe CC is worth the money.

    • @tractortherapy42
      @tractortherapy42 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hard to answer "is it worth it" generally - I'd say for me it is - it's pretty much an industry standard and obviously where I've decided to spend my edit time, but I don't have alot of experience with others like Final Cut Pro or the Sony product I hear alot about to compare. Good news is there are tons of channels on YT to help out with Premier CC - I'll try and put together a list of a few that have helped me if you do decide to go that way. It's a pretty 'big' program meaning I'm still finding new stuff many months after getting somewhat proficient. It has a pretty steep learning curve, but once you hit a few of those 'oh - that what that's for' moments, it all starts to click. I'm self taught - for better or worse...but it's one of my channel goals - to learn the tech behind video. I've spent a ton of time (and $$$) on audio lately - I actually think the audio is more complex than the video as crazy as that sounds. CC comes with a program called Audition which is a pretty awesome audio tool.

    • @TractorTimewithTim
      @TractorTimewithTim  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Tractor Therapy yes, audio is a thorn in our side. We do not have a decent solution. We have simply adopted an approach where we intentionally talk near the camera. Your rant about audio for the GoPro 5 is magnified even more for the GoPro 4. I can't buy an adapter cable which works with the rode video micro. GoPro quit making the only one which works!

    Purchased
    a Hoss seeder this year. Planted pelletized beet seed and it worked good for
    that. Planted peas and it worked good for that also. I thought it was skipping
    but I think the germination was poor because what was planted by hand before
    the Hoss arrived looked the same with skips. Had trouble planting sweet corn. Watching
    your video maybe I should have walked slower? I didn’t like the deep groove in
    the loose soil from the front wheel so I ordered another wheel from Hoss and
    used a long enough carriage bolt to have two wheels on the front. One on each
    side of the frame and the disc openers are in undisturbed soil. I think it
    helped for not having such a deep groove in the soil. After planting I put a
    drip line between the rows for watering and inject fertilizer. Night and day difference
    for germination time. In northern MN black heavy soil. Thanks for the
    informative videos

    Good video Tim, very informative. I have been on the fence about getting one myself. It's hard to justify dropping $300 on one especially if it still skips or doubles, heck I can get that doing it the fist thumb drop method. If I was selling it road side than yes I could justify spending that and recouping the cost in profits besides I don't mind spending time outside in my garden anyway.

    There are a lot of videos on planting corn with this. I wish you would do a video on planting small seeds with it. A lot of people on line are using a JANG seeder I wander if this HOSS is better or worse then the JANG ?

  • @michaelrice588
    @michaelrice588 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thanks for the excellent analysis of this product. I have this seeder and for me it has been a source of frustration trying to plant corn or beans with it. I'm good with it planting small round seeds once you resize the plate holes to match the largest seeds in your batch. I really wanted this to plant corn. I made a plate with 3 holes but to get right hole size is tedious and tries my patience since the plate always gets blocked by the larger seeds in the batch, causing skipping and the need to hand plant the voids. If you want to plant with a different variety then this is to be done all over again and will take another hour or two to tune the new plate to best drop the batch. I find that if I put only the amount of seed in the hopper to fill one side and leave the side open that will allow me to see the plate just after the seed is dropped then I can tell if a seed gets stuck and clear it with my knife. This makes it a slow process but still faster than hand planting.

    • @TractorTimewithTim
      @TractorTimewithTim  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes. I agree. This planter is nearly worthless with corn. I tried making my own plates. I could not do any better. Quite frustrating.
      I now use a tractor attached (real) planter for sweet corn.

      Know this is an old video, but if you get this, I would like to see a picture of you mounting it on the 318. Have my Earthway mounted like that, but have not figured the correct way to do it with the Hoss. Use the Earthway for larger seeds and the Hoss for smaller seeds. That way, generally do not ever change planting plates.

  • @dpd16790
    @dpd16790 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    i personally think the best way to handle planting in a garden would be to get a pvc pipe and make holes in it exactly where you want your spacing to be or a 2x4.. really anything the length of the garden that you can make a hole in. the pipe would have to have the hole made into a cup then put it up on something and you can walk down and quickly load all the holes without having to bend over the carry it over and dump in into the furrow.. cover with a rake and lightly pack it down. sounds like a lot of work and why not just plant directly in the soil but you wouldn't be measuring it but the one time to make the holes and that would be done standing up not bent over in the garden out in the sun. then all your individual seed placement would be done standing up and maybe in the shade if there is a tree near by.. then carry i over and dump it and repeat on each row..

  • @JAllyFarms

    We planted by hand...twice. Needed it a third time but...we thought twice was enough. Our corn looks it too. We still have corn from last year so it's no big deal. We'll have enough to have on the cob though. Hoss makes good equipment. Wonder how the bigger kernels would have done? Have a good day!

    • @TractorTimewithTim
      @TractorTimewithTim  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      the bigger kernels would have shown more skips. We do have some skips. I'll show that in a later update video at some point.
      You need to get on Katriel about this. You planted by hand (with Love) TWICE, and still didn't get a decent stand. I'm wondering if her advice is not solid :-)

    Hi Tim, I know your channel is much more than the garden now but how did your garden do this year ? Ours did really well. Do you freeze or can your vegetables ? How do you store you potatoes for later use? We would like to try to grow some spuds but not sure how to preserve them to use later thru the winter. We live south of you near Greensburg Indiana so our climate should be similar.

    • @TractorTimewithTim
      @TractorTimewithTim  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Scott Mote wow, you are not far away. Our garden was great!
      We cannot store potatoes all winter. They get soft. We are still using them now, I think. Need to ask Christy.
      Store potatoes in a single layer...on cool dry floor.
      We give most of our produce away.
      My extended family freezes sweet corn for us, but it is easy to do. Let me know if you need more details on that.

  • @cl18od6

    A suggestion on how to make it so that only one seed drops at a time. get a sheet of the plastic material that the company uses and cut a circle the same size as the one you used to plant the corn and drllout the required holes only whe you drill out the holes where the kernels sit to drop them into the planter reduce the diameter of the holes to a diameter that only allows one kernel to fit in. you will have a bit of difficulty doing the center hole as it has the one flat side. This is just a suggestion.
    Love and Peace, Blessed Be, Doug.

    • @TractorTimewithTim
      @TractorTimewithTim  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I tried this repeatedly. I have (well, I HAD) a blank plate. I kept making the holes bigger, and retrying. I could not get to a size which effectively dropped a single kernel. This was our point when showing the irregular size and shape of the kernels. They simply be 'singulated' in this fashion. Even in this garden (with the biggest holes), we see several doubles and even triples, but also several skips.
      I do not believe it is possible for this type of system to be accurate.
      The Hoss Wheel Hoe does the best that I have seen, but it is far from perfect.
      Thanks very much for your comment.

    Design a push tiller with large wheels that can fit perfectly in rows that has a swash plate pump motor to drive the tiller attachment with a worm gear box to also aid in driving the wheels. Then design a seed planting attachment and edging attachment to edge lawns. Then design a planting bed former attachment. Be a really cool multi tooled garden buddy. You could even design rotating blades for cutting lawns even weeding by a tiller slash grass cutter designed to tear up an inch of dirt on flat ground to get the weeds and their roots. 😊

      My response was not intended to be rude. Apparently it was taken that way.
      I’m just saying that if you have these good ideas, you should pursue them.
      I don’t develop push plows. I bought this thing online.
      I’m just trying to encourage you to invest effort in your own ideas. Only you can truly appreciate the idea during the ‘idea phase’. You have to develop it into a workable affordable product. THEN the world will see the value.
      ...and no, I have no need for a composting toilet or whatever.
      Again, no intent on my part to be rude. ...but from my standpoint, I’m already working 80 hours per week on the ideas that WE are pursuing as a family.

      Awe i see well if you would like information on how to contruct alternative power supplies to operate heating and cooling electrical power generation and other means to power farming equipment when their is no electric or diesel or gas? Well just ask and i will break down some components that will allow you to help your family when its needed. Stirling hot and cold gas cycle engines that operate water pumps hydraulic pump motors and electrical power generators and heating and cooling and refrigeration needs. If you have free time while droppins a biscuit in a bowl then watch a few videos on stirling engines both hot and cold gas cycles so you will have an idea of what i will be covering. V-twin stirling engine video would be a great start since this engine can operate off heat and off liquid air which is gases in the atmosphere turned into suoer cold Liquid with a cryogenic piston. Liquid air can be used to spray on weeds to freeze them leaving no chemical residue also liquid air is like 71% nitrogen which can be separated from liquid air using frequency emmitters to cause the nitrogen to vaporize out of the liquid that can then be used to chill water and infuse water with nitrogen and oxygen being circulated through a hydroponic green house just another use of liquid air and some things to think about with all the climate change. 😉😊
