Cognitive Dissonance is the state of having inconsistent thoughts, beliefs, or attitudes, especially as relating to behavioural decisions and attitude change. There is one particular area in which this is especially present, and in which it constitutes the norm, rather than the exception.

      1. "Stabbin' people is bad. Yet we as a society we richly reward Surgeon's for stabbin' people. Cognitive dissonance.
      2. Locking people against their will is bad. Yet our criminal justice systems relies on locking people against their will. Cognitive dissonance.
Purely logically logically these are sound. The issue lies in the underylng premises.
"My body feels better and I feel a lot better in the gym."
Nutrition is a complex topic. If you don't properly educate yourself on the risks and draw-bakcks of veganism you'll set yourself up to damage your health months or possible years from now.
Remember you're only a few weeks into this experiment with a sample size of just one. I can recommend reading ex-vegan accounts. Learning from their mistakes (health issues) can help you adjust your diet accordingly and increase your chances of remaining vegan. (Just a sincere word of advice. If you want to be vegan, you do you, I'm just not interested risking my health for that experiment)
But kuddo's on eating more fruits and veggies. It's something I aspore to do for obvious reasons, only without entirely cutting out food-groups.

p.s. "I simply did not want to contribute to that anymore."
That's more or less impossible. Entropy is a law of the universe. Short of killing yourself causing some degree of harm to other beings is inevitable. Even plant-based food is not strictyly vegan. (animals get shot to protect crops, pesticides are used, animals end up ground up by machinerey)
Truth is, there isn't a lot of reliable data on how many animals suffer for plant-based foods. And vegans generallly aren't interested in finding out or comparing both sides. One grassfed cow might involve less suffering overall than same nutrients obtained via strictly plant-based methods.
Vegans try to circumvent this by pointing out vegans are 'not perfect'. According to vegan principles as I got understand them (from on the receiving end getting called an unethical monster) this is a euphemism for euphemism for: "Yes, I'm complicit in a moral attrocity BUT...".

@@Penguinstudios123 So I should start by clarifying that the Vice video didn't put me on the fence, it more so started to make me question the morality in eating some animals and not others more seriously.
I think that I don't feel like its preaching from Alex because it falls within the context of the content he makes. But it comes off as preachy when its unprovoked, like if missionaries wandered up to you and started to talk about Jesus, or Jehovah, or Mormonism. I do agree with you that it may be in part because they know its wrong, if the person has actually reasoned with the whole concept. Some people won't even consider it because they can't contemplate giving up meat due to ignorance, willful or not.
The main reason I haven't switched is I guess I'm not entirely convinced its immoral, as far as eating animals goes (I do believe that the factory farming is highly immoral). The main reason I would say right now is a reason for me to stop is the pollution and resource impact of consuming meat at the level modern society does. If the world could unanimously get together and put an end to mass farming/slaughter and the impact that ends up having on the climate, I would support that, and never eat meat again if I had to, but thats a hard sell to many.
I think that the best chance for me to quit eating meat (and many others) is having viable substitutes like Beyond Meat which is supposed to replace meat nutritionally and taste-wise.

But then I see these videos of people with pet cows, and pigs and I don't think I could bring myself to kill and eat an animal I raised up. Btw a lot of these people who have pet cows still eat beef, just not their pets, and that was the argument by people in China "these animals were raised to be food!"
Idk I guess my problem is the question "Is it immoral to eat meat?" Which I wouldn't say so; humans are evolved to be predators, our binocular vision is evidence of that. But I think the real question is "Should an animal suffer to sustain me?" Which I would say is only true if its necessary. 150 years ago even meat was pretty much required, and today in many parts of the world it still is. I think the progression of society will ultimately lead to a vegan society (theyve pretty much accomplished that in india, right?)

Although you're still being a hypocrite by eating cheese, it reduces the amount of cruelty you're responsible. It's a move in the right direction and once you've started the move, you'll find momentum can keep you going and that perhaps you don't want that dairy after all.

@@davidbgreensmith that's good advice. Since this comment, I've reduced the amount of dairy I eat to the minimum amount that still give me the nutrients I need for my current diet (that means 1 medium bowl of yoghurt per day) while I figure out how to change my diet to get rid of that as well in a healthy and acceptable manner (I can't stand the taste of soy based dairy, otherwise I'd be set). Turns out, I didn't actually eat as many eggs as I thought so I could easily get rid of them. The only thing I'm not doing is checking every single package for ingredients but I think that the amount of animal products in there is fairly small since we mostly eat things made from fresh ingredients. My mom has a lot of allergies so she can't eat many processed foods which means we're used to making most things ourselves. That made it a lot easier to switch. I do still eat meat when my grandfather cooks for us but he refuses to cook vegetarian so the compromise is that he gives us half the portion of meat. It's kinda funny how meat is only really good when you've been eating it a lot for years. Since I went vegetarian I started finding the taste becoming kinda bad. Good luck! The first month(s) of veganism can be hard - I won't lie and say they're not, but that's just natural with any new diet/lifestyle. Two tips:
      1. eat enough CALORIES and make sure you are getting the right amounts of all the other nutrients (eg. protein, iron...). simply removing meat from a burger (for example) doesn't make it good vegan meal. It is a steep learning curve, especially going straight to veganism from a carnivorous diet, so make sure you research it a bunch. You are essentially learning a new skill, so don't give up - if it isn't working, (and this may seem harsh, but) it won't be because of veganism, it'll be because you aren't eating correctly.
      2. dealing with meat eaters mocking and questioning you... this is also a new experience and they will catch you out every now and again, but the facts ARE on your side, you just need to educate yourself. If it does come up in conversation, be respectful and be the one to ask them questions, letting them come across their contradictions.

Anyway, this is what the largest *scientific* body of nutrition on the planet has said about properly planned plant-based diets:
“It is the position of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics that appropriately planned vegetarian, including vegan, diets are healthful, nutritionally adequate, and may provide health benefits for the prevention and treatment of certain diseases. These diets are appropriate for all stages of the life cycle, including pregnancy, lactation, infancy, childhood, adolescence, older adulthood, and for athletes. Plant-based diets are more environmentally sustainable than diets rich in animal products because they use fewer natural resources and are associated with much less environmental damage. Vegetarians and vegans are at reduced risk of certain health conditions, including ischemic heart disease, type 2 diabetes, hypertension, certain types of cancer, and obesity. Low intake of saturated fat and high intakes of vegetables, fruits, whole grains, legumes, soy products, nuts, and seeds (all rich in fiber and phytochemicals) are characteristics of vegetarian and vegan diets that produce lower total and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels and better serum glucose control. These factors contribute to reduction of chronic disease. Vegans need reliable sources of vitamin B-12, such as fortified foods or supplements.”
(B12 is made by bacteria in the soil and supplemented into meat and dairy products as well btw so you’re supplementing B12 directly/indirectly either way)

@@sarenareth689 There are so many vegan alternatives available these days, it's absolutely possible to enjoy a varied and satisfying diet without animal products! I'm a pretty picky eater but I've got a good set of staple meals I do enjoy that I can always fall back on when I don't feel like making an effort.
I totally understand that it can seem daunting when you've spent your whole life relying on animal products but I promise you you'll find alternatives you enjoy, it just may take some time experimenting. There are days when I just want to give in and eat the delicious meal the rest of my family is eating, but there are other days when I'm super satisfied by my vegan meals and my family is envious of me! The most important thing for me is that I ultimately feel most at peace with myself when I eat vegan, even when the going gets rough, knowing that I'm doing the right thing.
Vegan baking can actually be really fun to experiment with! There are thousands of vegan baking recipes on the Internet that you can try out, you'd be surprised how many ingredients have easy vegan substitutes.
One of the most important things when going vegan is making sure you get enough protein. This is what will keep you feeling satiated. Try to live by the simple rule of including at least one good protein source in every meal, whether that's tofu, meat substitutes, beans, nut butter, lentils, seitan, etc. Don't go having meals of just rice and vegetables or you'll be so hungry and find it way harder to resist animal products! You need to feel satisfied. Try out vegan sausages, vegan burgers, vegan mince, vegan yoghurt, soya milk, etc! So many options, some will be great and some will be gross lol
Sorry for the essay, but finally I just want to say that besides making the switch to vegan, the next most important thing is to make sure you can keep it up in long run. If you don't think you can go cold-turkey successfully, then start by replacing animal products that you don't rely on as much - maybe butter or honey or yoghurt, for example - and gradually build up to replacing the rest. Set targets for reducing your consumption of a certain product if that helps you stay on track. And if you end up being vegan except for let's say one animal product you just can't give up, that's still making a huge difference. Be kind to yourself but not complacent! Good luck❤

It’s a bit of a challenge to go vegan at first, because you are now aware of how so many things in your life contain animal products. It’s not just meat/dairy/eggs. You have to make some changes in your life that you’ve never thought of before. It’s a learning curve, but it becomes easier with time.
Thankfully, veganism is becoming more popular so it’s pretty easy to skip the meat/dairy section at the grocery store and pick up some alternatives.

Also sadly for ages I didn't realize pigs are more intelligent than dogs. In terms of self-awareness. e.g. a pig can recognize itself in a mirror eventually, most dogs can't. (A pig will try and wipe off it's own face when it sees a mark on it's face in the mirror) And also puzzle solving... finding something to get a reward. Yes dogs ARE better at understanding human commands, very loyal, and are more obedient so we also assume they are also more intelligent.

I was about to make the same comment. Worrying about appearing preachy, personal laziness and willingness to ignore my beliefs for convenience all held me back, but it has been put very clearly into perspective by this video. Thank you very much.

@Ruben O. Okay, I get thinking that humans have more moral worth. But do you really think the moral worth of a fish is worth less than the momentary enjoyment of a tuna sandwich (for example), which you'll end up forgetting in a day or two?
Like, there are some really really good recipes and foods that don't contain animal products. You said yourself that animals have moral worth, so wouldn't a meal you enjoy that isn't made of animals be more moral that a meal you enjoy which is made of animals?

You should have just ripped that mic off the stand so that you could drop it. Scathingly honest. Great video. Vegan 4 years here and no sign of ever turning back. We all need to move forward.

... I really hope you are kidding... this video was an appeal to emotion. It didn't have anything in it that should really cause people to change their minds about anything.
He has far better videos on the topic of veganism, frankly, this is probably his worst video on the subject.

@@timeshark8727 you think? It wasn't an appeal to emotions though. It was a breakdown of reactions to animal abuse, and to those who defend animals from such abuse.
It's a comparison piece which is opening the eyes of many to arguments that they hadn't recognised.

@@timeshark8727 This video was about cognitive dissonance. And in my opinion Alex did bring the point across on how hypocritical it is to on one hand, defend the rights of some animals and have such a strong emotional reactions to these individual cases but then not care at all about millions and billions of other innocent species being killed for food. I don't particularly care whether or not he appealed to emotion, i dont need a rationally layed out argumentation on why mass-genocide is bad.

Cognitive dissonance is basically the reason I went vegan. I can't justify eating animal products while loving and being fascinated by animals. I get the same emotions when I see a cow lying in the grass and when I meet a dog. I couldn't kill any animal for food or treat it the way, they get treated, to get other products.
One of the facts that kills me the most: it would cost like 10 cents to check eggs if it will become a male or female chick. This would end so much suffering, but it's not done because most people wouldn't accept the price increase.
I've given up on basic decency and common sense years ago and I'm fully aware that we will never reach a society where animals are treated correctly, but that even small steps like this are too much to ask for just kills me.

Oh wow, I didn't know it was possible to check the sex of the eggs. Although, even if we did check, what difference would it make? I too have given up on basic decency and common sense recently and it's just gnawing away at me.

@@augustinwai6399 it’s a technology from Germany, which can determine the sex 9 days after fertilization of the egg. Therefore the male eggs could be sorted out and be processed before they develop further/hatch.
It’s by far not perfect, but I’d think it’s at least less suffering than shredding fully aware chicks.

Now you just need to convert all the other millions of carnivorous wild beasts out there. Don't let your message stop with humans dear brother, they represent only a small percentage of responsibility for the many animals slaughtered every waking hour of every day. Go big with your vision. We need all animals to stop eating each other. They should be ashamed of themselves. Those barbarians don't even have the good manners to use a knife and fork and wait for their prey to be fully dead before eating, the savages that they are.

There ARE however pain-free ways of killing animals by using nitrogen as opposed to CO2... It is just industry and consumers cutting corners refusing to pay for the higher expense...
