One of the reasons that I enjoy your videos is that you show the screw ups, not just the triumphant moments. 8:22 especially gave me a good laugh. Thanks for keeping it real. 😆
This is why i love your channel man, you dont just put in the shot that counts, no pun intended. But you put in all the time, effort and frustrations along the way. This really shows just how difficult it is using this older tech, but gettin it done. Awesome stuff brotha, look forward to the next one, god bless from ole Carolina.
Perseverance pays off in the end. Your “dang” moments I expected with your nostalgics blend of 18th century hunt in modern day. All the best from Alaska! Kevin
No back strap coyote on the spit ? Your a dying breed and that is why this country needs more people just like you! Nice video! Look forward to new coyote hat video.
I made a pretty cool cows knee out of oiled leather and bobcat fur. Helps keep moisture out of my lock on those frosty mornings. Great video. Great channel. Keep em coming 👍
Good hunt, great shot with a flintlock, you my friend are a throwback, a great outdoorsman, you were born a hundred and fifty years too late, always entertaining, thanks for sharing.
Fun hunt! Misfires happen with modern rifles too... I was elk hunting, with a buddy, in a wilderness area of the Wind River Mtns, above Pinedale, WY. We were about 60 miles away from town and around 10K feet in elevation. My buddy had a 6x6 at 175 yards and his 7mm Rem Mag went "pop". He quickly chambered another round. I was quick to holler "don't shoot". I figured he might have a bullet sitting half-way down his barrel, which he did. Upon further investigation, he had hand loaded 50 rounds before we left on the trip but he had not put powder in any of those 50 cartridges. So, the magnum primer had enough energy to send the bullet down his barrel about 6 inches. That was the only ammo he had on the trip. And it was the only bull we saw for 10 days. We had fun but went home with 2 empty tags and a good story. Those tags aren't bad if you put enough hot sauce on them... 😊😊😊
Hey clay , nice hunt , I just have a question: if I backed my hickory bow with rawhide, if I stained it with an oil based stain, will it affect its performance?❤thanks for your time
My treeing walker jumped up when you blew on that rabbit squealer. He's too gun shy to to actually go along for a hunt but he's made a pretty charmed life for himself never the less. I always enjoy your videos.
My beagle - took her in as a stray last August so I don't know her history - doesn't seem to be much of a hunter, either - but the first time he blew the call she sat up and started turning her head the way they do when they are paying attention. When he did more of just a series of squeals right after that she came over and was actually looking at my phone (I am watching TH-cam on my phone)) to see what was going on. She actually had her nose to the phone. The next time he used the call she looked but after that I guess she knew where it was coming from and didn't even look up from her nap.
Timing is perfect .. I need to do some hat hunting as well, to match my brain tanned Buckskin suite. I feel and respect coyotes as well. Your an original my friend.
I used to hunt coyotes back in the late 70s early 80s. The fur man that we sold them to, told us that the hides were exported to the Soviet Union, then transformed to Russian wolf, to be made into coats and exported to Europe and the U.S.
I just found out about you because of a bow video and i (a 16 year old boy from the netherlands) dream to be like you when i grow up. I already love the outdoors, but the strict gun and hunting rules make it harder to get into hunting in Europe. I hope you have a great day and keep making more amazing and educative videos like these!
That was sweet! Perfect shot! Clay, I noticed the first misfire that the pan powder didn’t ignite. For me, that issue has been powder absorbing moisture right out of the air (especially in your conditions) or a dull flint. When I’m target practicing I’ll use 4F in the pan but for hunting I use 2F in the pan same as the barrel. The 2F being a much larger granule, is more climate resistant and it’s hardly noticeable on ignition time. Give it a try next time your target shooting to see how you like it.
You are a true hunter! Flint lock, iron sights, small moving target at 100 yds perfect heart lung shot .That was outstanding !!! Can't wait till your next video !! If you're running low on coyotes ,where you live come to Southern Oklahoma , they're nuisance animals and cattle ranchers will sometimes pay you to thin the pack.
Awesome video! Love your flintlock hunting videos. Looks like your FL may have a coned barrel since I didn't see you use a short starter, but maybe I missed it.
I'm enjoying the flintlock content. We've been hunting with flintlocks in Western PA since the late '70s. What snow camo were you wearing? A couple things, from my experience with smoke-poles: I carry a small piece of mesh sand paper and "clean" my frizzen every time I get on stand, I also pick the touch hole every time; we made "frizzen covers" out of deer hide (tie them off to the front of the trigger guard). The frizzen cover protects your frizzen during movement and once stationary, you can fully cock the flintlock as the cover 1) acts like a safety and 2) it is completely silent to remove when you are ready to shoot (no "click" from cocking the flintlock). Keep it up, Clay!
My mom always used to say, "jim, always make sure your hole is clean before you go out, because you never know". So now I finally know what she meant. 😂 Towards the end, I really started to think you’d have to trap one. Exciting video, and with a flintlock! Looking forward to seeing the tanning. I’ve skimmed a few animals before, and seen lots of buckskin tanning, but not much home tanning fur. I’m also looking forward to getting a hat from you, since you gave one to your friend Xander, and I’m your friend too, right? 😊
That was a pretty tough hunt. I like that you keep The Good the Bad and the coyote in the mix. Primitive hunting with a Flintlock has to be a passion like the saying goes if it was easy everyone would do it.
I have. I had to follow my dad around forever freezing my butt off while he would try and bag a yote with a rock lock he had built, or assembled from a kit. It took him 2 years, but he got it. Many a day I thought about just blasting a song dog so we could go home and stop freezing. Hats off, song dogs with a Flint lock is hunting.
The unscripted - harvest or not - is the joy of the journey - flash in the pan was fun to watch (even though frustrating for you) - authenticity for the win
Great video Clay - greetings from New Zealand. (p.s you should get down here for some big game hunting if you ever get a chance! The family would love it here too)
@@clayhayeshunter You should my friend! Big country, all game animals are invasive, public land hunting is free year round with no tags or limits - you're doing a civic duty by knocking over as many as you can - some would say we are blessed down here!
I’ve killed several with my flintlock. Usually when I’m deer hunting and the unlucky coyote wanders in. I have shot flintlocks for 50 years and if they don’t go off its my fault not the rifles. Really enjoy all of your content. More please, Mike from Ky.
Hey clay, Im a longtime follower and fan of your work. Please keep up the excellent content! I have to ask, what exactly the coat is that you are wearing? Looks comparable in quality and style to a filson mackinaw, but such a neat pinstripe pattern on that jacket... care to share?
Hey Clay, did/do you know Dale Toweill? He was my Dad's best friend in High School in Sweet Home, OR. I believe he was the head elk biologist in Idaho until he retired. We used to spend TONS of time at his Dad, Dale's, ranch in John Day, OR when we lived there when I was a kid. Super cool guy, super cool ranch. He had a private pond with HUGE rainbow trout.
I gotta be honest with you.. I'd have cursed each time I heard the click with out the bang. (I was already doing that while watching heh) Well done sir.. Looking forward to the hat making video =)
Perfect shot placement..... and with a flintlock. Excellent work.
I'm glad you liked it!

He couldn't sleep the night before we left. So, he decided to load some rounds.
I bet he never makes that mistake again.
Krazy Kid. 😊
Now that's a challenging hunt!!! Awesome!!! Congrats. I hope you show us how you make your hat!
Thanks! I’ll try to make a video about my hat in the future.
As a long time flintlock shooter heres a tip for you always start your hunt with a new flint and always check your flint for sharpness first
What an inspiring video of perseverance in spite of many obstacles.
Thanks Clay.
I would have been discouraged after that first day, but you made it happen! What a cool video, thanks for sharing!
Very nice job! Can’t wait to see the final product! I love my red fox hat that is from a big male that I snared.
Clay you’re a real life mountain man. A legend in my book.
Hey clay , nice hunt , I just have a question: if I backed my hickory bow with rawhide, if I stained it with an oil based stain, will it affect its performance?❤thanks for your time
A thin rawhide back shouldn’t affect performance at all.
I think he was talking about the oil based stain. In my humble opinion I don’t think a stain would affect your bow in any way.
I’m a simple man - I see flintlock hunting with clay and I watch
ive just started coyote hunting and never thought of using black powder. oh you have inspired me. thank you friend

Good job on the video Clay, nice shot on the yote your persentance paid off. What rifle and load did you use?
This is a .50 from Tennessee valley manufacturing. 70 grains ffg and a patch round ball.
