  • How to safely secure a wheelchair and its passenger for transport in a vehicle using Unwin Safety Systems Combined webbing systems.
Unwin offer a range of Combined Restraint Systems.
There are Combined Restraint Systems suitable for wheelchairs weighing up to 120kg which are available with the Karabiner hooks or Snaplock.
There is the Gemini system designed for wheelchairs weighing 140kg which uses heavy duty Karabiners.
On both these systems, the passenger and rear wheelchair restraint are mounted together, allowing them to be set at the same time, for rapidity and ease of operation.
    To fit:
Clip the front non-adjustable strap into the rail. Attach the front straps to the main frame of the wheelchair.
Fit the other strap into the rail ensuring that the clips are level with one another.
Pull back the chair to tension and apply the brakes.
If a third point fixing is to be used, the reel unit must be placed nearest to the 3rd point fixing.
Fit the unit in to the rail behind the wheelchair, using the aluminium fixing bar.
Open the over centre buckle and unfasten the Snaplock. Fit the webbing around the wheelchair frame and fasten the Snaplock. Pull the webbing until tight, and using both hands close the over centre buckle.
Repeat the operation on the other side.
The webbing should create an angle of around 40º to hold the wheelchair correctly.
The wheelchair is now fixed securely within the vehicle.
If a third point fixing is to be used, clip the fixing into the cant rail, above the inertia reel and unfasten the tongue and buckle.
Pull the black webbing upwards and unfasten the tongue from the red webbing buckle.
Position the black webbing to form the lap belt and insert the tongue into the stalk.
Pull out the red webbing from the reel, remove the black plastic cover from the third point tongue, and connect the tongue into the third point fixing.
Position the red webbing to form the shoulder belt and fasten the tongue and buckle.
Adjust the height of the shoulder belt to clear the occupant's shoulder.
To remove the passenger restraint, disconnect the red webbing buckle.
Undo the shoulder belt from the third point fixing and re-secure the tongue to the buckle.
Unfasten the tongue from the stalk and release the lap belt.
Clip the lap and shoulder belts back together and allow the webbing to retract back on to the reel.
To remove the wheelchair restraints, undo the over-centre buckles in turn. Detach the Snaplocks and remove the webbing from the frame.
Remove each combined rear assembly from the rail.
Release the brakes, push the wheelchair forward to loosen the front straps.
Unfasten the straps and remove them from the rail.
Gemini, which is the Heavy Duty Combined System, is fitted in a similar way. It has black webbing at the front and rear.
Special Karabiners are used with a locking mechanism for extra strength.
The over-centre buckles are also designed to take heavier weights.
A passenger restraint should now be fitted.
