  • www.diyhipchick... Beth Allen of HIP Chicks shows how to remove a fiberglass bathtub. You too can remove that wasted space from your home and make way for a big renovation. Maybe you just want to save money on the demolition. Fiberglass tubs are lightweight and you can take them out with a buddy to help you.

    thanks for feedback on losing the tub. really I never used, took too long to fill, was drafty by window and I had to climb into it to open a window. I love my new space with out it. wish I could post a picture of the finished product

      DIYHIPChicks as a person who loves baths I would kill for a large corner tub. Didn’t think about how much water it would use or if the hot water heater would be big enough to fill it. But where there’s a will there’s a way.
      Thick blanket like curtains might have stopped that draft, an oil filled space heater in the middle of the bathroom would help also.
      I would use it 4-5 times a week. To come in after spending the day out in the cold and drink a cup of tea in my corner tub. Maybe mount a flat screen tv to the wall. Surround sound speakers mounted above on the ceiling.
      I might buy a mobile home just cause they have corner tubs.
      Thanks

    @DIYHIPChicks, thanks for the video. Glad I checked behind the skirting before removing anything. There’s no floor under my tub! It looks like the builder used a hammer to knock tile out of the way - it’s very jagged. I can see the ground and rocks, etc under my tub. I’ve lived here almost 8 years and have NEVER used the tub! My bathroom layout is exactly like your before. What to do?

    • @DIYHIPChicks
      @DIYHIPChicks  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey. Well you will need to replace the floor under the tub. Lay subfloor and add tile. If you can't get same tile, you may want to redo whole floor. SOrry it will lead to larger project. But I am so glad our tub is gone. Don't miss it.
      We laid new travertine tile. But LVP is a great option for bathrooms ad less laborious than tile. Good luck. LMK if you have any more questions

    I’m having trouble finding the video on how to disconnect the plumbing. I’m doing this with minimal help and none of it professional. (Cost too much) help, please?

      Hi sorry for delay. We put a cedar chest/bench under the window. So much better access to window. Place to get dressed. Maybe a small dresser for extra storage. A comfy upholstered chair. Good luck

    Just saw another video where the guy used a sawsall to cut the acrylic tub into small manageable pieces to dispose of.

    I removed my tub (well it was gone when I bought the place, this was an abandoned trailer) how about the permanent capping of the drain and vent pipes? Any thing I need to know or can I shark bite the drain after cut to tuck it under the floor

    • @DIYHIPChicks
      @DIYHIPChicks  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      HI sorry for the delay. We soldered a cap onto our supply line under the old tube. I love Sharkbites but only use them where I can access them if there is a leak. We rerouted the drain and vent system into an adjacent wall. Good luck

    Would love to do this for our mom. She has Alzheimers and just fell getting out of her corner garden tub! Hers has jets tho so would probably need a plumber to remove. What did you replace yours with?

    • @DIYHIPChicks
      @DIYHIPChicks  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi. As a former RN and head of a dementia care unit, my heart is with you. Tough situation for your mom. Hang in there with the care-taking role. We removed the tub and expanded our shower x2. Now 52 in x 52 in stall with bench seat. Greatest decision. We do have a hall bath with tub so removing the tub didn't effect resale or code by having no tub at all. Good luck

    How did u cut the metal piping? You're literally the first video I see where they show the piping

    • @DIYHIPChicks
      @DIYHIPChicks  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Used a basic pipe cutter. Under $10. Be sure water is off. You can use shark bite caps until you plan out rest of remodel. Pipes should be soldered closed before burying in floor. Shark bites best used where you have access panel. Good luck.

    *gasp* I won't officially give a thumbs down to the video, but why would you remove a corner tub? Haven't you heard of Calgon? I love my corner garden tub. That is my area to relax after a long, hideous day.
    Still, nice video to learn what's under there. I want to decorate mine and need to know what is under there before I remove the skirting under it. :)

      HI that makes for more challenges. If it is fiberglass like most are, you can use a sawzall or reciproating saw to cut it into pieces. Not as hard as it sounds
