Hey Jamie, great comparison videos on your channel. The Spectrum 128k version of Rastan has music and also loads the full game in one go. As is the case with most other 128k versions compared with the 48k
Thank you very much for indulging me with the Rastan comparison. I had the Sega Master System version and that game made me dream in my childhood. Good luck on your channel.🙌👍
Hitting it out of the park Jamie : every video hits. It's like I am re-living my speccy days and looking forward to the annual holiday so that I can play the arcade games with stacks of 10p coins
i am impressed by the number of high quality content from this channel, also, nice video to watch, knowing that part 3 is officially coming out to switch and ps4/ps5 this week and i can't wait to finally play it officially at home other than emulation, that is great.
Great video! I spent a lot of money on Rastan Saga when it came out in the arcades - it was absolutely my favourite arcade game. Always wanted an Amiga version - and soon we'll be getting one! Can't wait for it - it looks excellent.
On the iigs... if you had any kind of upgrade to the ram (was easy to get) the gameplay was pretty seamless, and the music was downright world-changing. I hope you get your hands on a decent version. Thanks for the video!!
Absolutely loved this game in the arcade, you knew where you were when you walked into somewhere and heard that definitive music and sound effects, it was always one of the loudest arcades. Great great game, I had this on my Speccy but I could never get it to play, had 3 copies of it (official tapes) it just didn't want to play for me. Emulators gave me what I wanted 35 years ago. Love these vids mate. 💪🏼
@JustJamie1983 ah it was a belter, ridiculously hard when you've been given a stack of 10p's from your parents... They always set the dip switches to hard at the fair... Brutal difficulty.
I had it on the Master System but played it through the Game Gear adapter on the Game Gear. The arcade game I remember from a gas station in Mountain Home, Arkansas and I would always play it after getting gas. The music is still one of my all time favorite video games. I would like to see a comparison of Gyruss, Wizard of Wor, Dig Dug and Time Pilot if you have the chance.
yeah I loved Rastan in the arcade as a kid, and when I finally got my hands on the C64 version... well, it was Double Dragon pain all over again. Some heavy hits we took as kids back in the day, but thankfully the C64 had a big library to choose from :) Very nice soundtrack though, I totally agree, Galway must have felt crushed upon playing it when it was all done.
To me, Rastan is almost purely local video shop vibes, here in the UK. I do remember spending some time with the Spectrum version (Hit Squad pocket money tapes ❤). Excellent video of rastan saga ports of the 87 Arcade I had the sega MS port and loved it back in the 89. I wish the pc engine had gotten a port as it would of been the best back in the day imo anyway keep up the good work not many utubers cover pre 90s video games not made by Nintendo #NEC8BITSUPERSYSTEM
I love the Spectrum version Iv'e got the 128k version and the music is very close to the arcade. Those bats in the castle stages are still a nightmare though lol.
Over the years I have come to appreciate the Master System version more and more. The presentation could be a tad better (the collision detection is sometimes a little off) but the balancing of the difficulty is quite perfect and the overall mood of the game is unique and pleasant. Ethereal, kind of.
Maybe an emulation issue with the Apple version as it's usually pretty smooth. This was my favourite game growing up, hammered it in the arcades until I got a Master System then I could play it every day at home. The MSX version always gets underrated to glad to see you gave it some love, plays really well when you get used to it. The SMS version was developed by Taito btw.
Great video! I loved Rastan on the SEGA Master System in the 1980's. Challenging game. A little feedback on your mic audio, respectfully: consider investing in a pop filter. Your "P" sounds (words that began with the letter P) were peaking your mic a bit.
DOS ports are underrated, the only major problem with them is usually too many options so you not always know what sound to set up, but emulation with DOSBox forks fixes that problem. Another issue is lack of standard romset, so you figure if the version you downloaded from various abandonware sites or found on old discs, has folders in right places.
And DOSbox emulation speed, in general, sucks. Often too fast or too slow for a particular game. Also, laggy audio. But this is an inherent problem of DOS emulation. All the suffering due to soundcard/videocard compatibility or CPU speed is real and authentic :) And you only get to experience a small % of it, compared to how it was IRL :D IRL different soundcards woukd sound very different, some had glitches with stuck music notes, some not enough bass, some to much high frequency noise, some too much noise overall, some had right and left channels swapped.. FM/GM music would sound very different too..
I used to to be able to get to the first boss on c64 as a kid - I don't know how, I replayed it recently and that first rope section felt impossible. Unfortunately, while I never got there myself to try, the c64 version is known to be literally impossible to complete without a no collision cheat because on stage 4 a rope will swing you directly into water.

@JustJamie1983 yes used to use a trick pausing it by pressing the space bar during jumps which probably didn't actually help at all only ever made it over the fire ropes 3 times I know it was said to be glitched and impossible but I made it 3 times lol
