Thanks Anthony! Great to understand this. Just got the news from Toyota during a major service (car at 217k - 2012 150 D4D Prado) that the buckets need replacing (two intake out of spec - one at 0.15) and a couple on the exhaust side. Toyota quote to do the job is not cheap and it is mostly labour as you indicated - sourcing the parts they said could take time, and if they need to import from Japan - it's about 3 weeks!
I’m surprised you let them do that very risky I think you need to watch more videos check out my InJector information playlist you also find out say don’t let them adjust it not worth the money seen much worse and it’s probably .1 7.18 not .15
The word "Lifters" come from the older engines, for example the old Holden red motor had a lifter resting on the cam that pushed the pushrod up to move the rocker arms as the rocker arms pushed the valves open. So lifters lifted the pushrods 👍🏻
Thanks Adam I know what the old Engines had also I just don’t quite understand why they called lifters I don’t care whereabouts in the engine there they’re not really lifting anything they’re getting pushed up. Just something that we’ve excepted that isn’t quite right really
Thanks for the video Just doing mine now on my surf 1kz te. The intake measurements ran below spec as you said is often the case. However the exhaust gaps were above spec. Does this sound right ?
I have a 2003 Prado 120 Diesel that has like a tappet ticking noise, it always had a tappet noise on start up but straight after no more... now idles no noise, when revs the tappet noise starts and stays... sounds like 1 tappet... was told this motor has shims...would that be more like the issue ??... mechanic who worked years for Toyota said not a major issue but i want it fixed just in case it's serious.... don't drive it everyday but it's been like this now for awhile...oil changed every 10k every 2nd oil change use oil flush
any help Anthony or anybody else, i've been watching most of your videos all the way through, but no real understanding what my ticking nose could be... please help...anybody ??
Depending when the clearances were last done and how many KMs you have added, if it’s a tick that’s perfectly timed to the RPM and always ticking then it could be your clearances but I would be surprised. Hydraulic lifters are the style tend to tick more and it’s when a lifters oil orifice is blocked and that’s often due to oil change intervals / crud in the engine. If the ticking is somewhat intermittent it could be an exhaust manifold leak or crack. That certainly can make a ticking noise
Hey Anthony, can I just confirm - you’re saying these engines basically never need a valve adjustment? I have a 150 prado, 240k on the clock, full serviced by Toyota. It’s due a valve check and adjustment at this service (according to the schedule) and at $1230 for the service I’d expect valves to be checked. The Toyota service guys said all they do is a auditory check by listening to the motor! So I confirmed that the valves are not measured with gauges and they said no they are not. Do you think this is acceptable in your opinion? I declined having the vehicle serviced and am taking it to the guy that did my injectors instead for almost half the price. He also said, like you, that they are never out of spec. Sorry for the essay, just curious about your thoughts on Toyotas methods of a valve check and weather these engines even need checking if maintenance etc is performed regularly. Cheers, Rohan
Thanks for the video. My NX diesel Pajero has recommended valve adjustment every 30k. Do you think this is necessary as quite expensive to get a mechanic to do it and also involves moving a lot of gear to get the rocker cover off?
Ron here that’s video was so good learnt a lot
