"This exhibition gives us an ability to look into Bob Dylan's visual artwork through the decades, since he started creating. Drawing sketches originally, then moving to painting, then creating also sculptures in iron work, some of which we have here on display. The idea of the exhibition is to allow the visitor to undergo the journey of Bob Dylan through the decades since he started performing. Dylan famously took a train ride from Minnesota to go to New York City to perform at 'Café Wha' and ever since continued to perform all through the decades over 3,000 performances, and he continues to. In between writing lyrics, composing melodies, performing on stages, he took notes, visual notes, that later became the drawings, the paintings, the visual artwork that we see today in 'Retrospectrum.'"

"What is interesting about Dylan, as a man of Renaissance, is his ability to articulate ideas, both in lyrics, through text, in melodies, his ability to perform them, to give them such meaning, as well as his ability to visually draw, paint and create the works in metal. It is significant because we don't see too many artists with the ability to be so prolific today, but similarly to times in history like the Renaissance, we can see the genius, the unique voice, that he had to express so many ideas, situations, so many events through his career that has now reached six decades. He is obviously giving us a remarkable ability to look into what was Dylan's journey through the visual work that is staged here at Maxxi."

    20. SOUNDBITE (English) Shai Baitel, curator of exhibit:
"What is universal and global in Dylan's unique voice is simplicity. Complex ideas, but in simple words that spoke to a wider audience. And he became a popular performer fairly early in his career, he was able to fill a concert hall right after he started in New York City, and I think that also the art, his representation of ideas that are expressed in simple ways so they can be absorbed, they can be taken by a wider audience. But nevertheless, the ideas are universal, they are phenomenal, individual stories that are universal ideas."
