They don't survive in this ending either, it just shows them "keep going " like Thelma said... It's meant to symbolise them carrying on being free even in death, at least that's my take on it after just watching this. Incredible movie, always leaves me in tears without fail...

Thought the same! Haven't seen this ending before, and still it feels like i have. Maybe because i know all of it without seeing it, or because this is what i felt was missing. Always thought the ending is just a tiny tiny bit abrupt. Even so, i always cries my heart out.
Powerful, beautiful movie! Just like Thelma & Louise. 💜

Shortly before this movie came out, I went to a test screening. They told us about both endings, then had us vote for which ending us, the audience, would prefer. Hands down, the majority voted for T & L to just fly off the edge, and then roll credits. It was the right decision, and put this movie in legend status forever.

    • @sdkelmaruecan2907

The problem is that the credits roll while they show clips from the film and that annoyed me a little, I was just mourning the loss of these two women and then they pop up on the screen smiling again and taking the picture etc. I wish the credits rolled on the white screen, the last image was an instant icon but it was a bit ruined by what went just after. In my opinion.

That scene where Susan Sarandon asked "You sure?" and when Harvey Keitel was looking over the cliff, clenching his jaw, disheartened that he didn't get the chance to save them. These are some true moments of acting. Surreal. It attaches itself like an emotional anchor ready to drag your tears down.

Amen I haven't saw the whole movie in about 5 years now I guess and I'm about ready to watch it again, but yet the movie is so good and then it also has this sad monotone to it as well. Shoot just watching the end and hearing the music start to play and we all know what it leads to I will say its a tearjerker for sure. One of the best movies of all time!

+Bandit Darville its really a happy ending when you think about it. When Thelma said "lets keep going" they were able to define civilization, able to go how they wanted and when they wanted. On top of all that they were able to continue their adventure together into the afterlife as they drove off in the end.... A sad ending would have been both of them sitting in a 2 by 4 cell for 25 years to life....

@@banditdarville96 Well, maybe you should see the whole movie right from the beginning to the end, in one time, once !... to get it even better !... There's nothing "monotone" in it !... It's the "Road's Time", and it has its own rythm... Of course, it does not have the rythm of "today's movies, in which you must contractually have an explosion and half a dozen violent deaths each two minutes, + a lot of computer's graphic effects... and no more good stories ! Beautiful ending. This one spells it out while the other trusts that the audience understands that the spirit of these characters/women can't die. They're still out there - roaming the desert with the top down, free as can be.

  • @ZarrinParisa18
    @ZarrinParisa18 11 ปีที่แล้ว +355

I don't think this ending is a question of realistic-ness - it's not really an alternative plot line, but an alternative ending of the same story. They still drive off a cliff, and the women still perish in that fall, but figuratively they are still driving across the country, their friendship is still alive. That is what is meant by the last shot of the blue car driving towards the mountains.

***** I realize that, but in the movie it was supposed to be Grand Canyon. It even says so in the script and Louise even exclaims it! In film, it's not unusual to substitute locations for others. For example, the early scenes were filmed in SoCal, but it was supposed to be Arkansas.
Besides, Utah would've been out of their way, since they were trying to get to Mexico ASAP. The problem was, Louise wanted to avoid Texas altogether even though it was the shortest route, so they drove instead through Oklahoma, New Mexico, and Arizona where they were finally cornered.

I like this ending...yes, it's emotional, but to me it is fitting. T&L never set out to break the law, but they were forced to do something after their money was stolen. Harvey Keitel's character realized this and I believe that they deserved to start their lives over. In an alternate ending, Keitel's character never stopped looking for them because something inside told him that they were granted a "do-over". That's my ending.

We hung up and I sat and stewed about before calling her back. My mom is the type of person who only likes movies with happy endings. I knew this movie would bother her if she saw the ending. So, when I called her back, I warned her the movie does not have a happy ending. She said, "Well, forget it, then," and she switched the channel. I knew she would be heartbroken if she saw that ending. To this day, she still doesn't want to know how that movie ends.

I read that another reason why they stuck with the original ending is because the manikins in the car came loose and fell out of the car near the bottom of the canyon when it begins to turn upside down. It would have been too expensive to re-shoot the scene.

oh, that's fascinating. you created a postmodern ending to an already postmodern road picture. realism bedamned. it wasn't "realistic" that they could blow up that truck with one shot either. if they'd done this, it would've been debated for years. did they survive? are they dead and on their way to glory? ultimately it makes a statement about buddy pictures. why should the guys have all the lucky, narrow escapes that defy physics..? i really love this. great work!

thanks for this, i think i prefer this ending even though its not very realistic, maybe they could of done something to make them escape better, i keep thinking that the perfect ending would be them sitting on the beach in Mexico having made it like they said, but anyway, what a wonderful movie, many thanks to everyone who helped make it.

    • @Bella-Mae0422

How was this not realistic to you?? They drove off a huge cliff at the Grand Cayon of course they weren't going to survive and they knew that that's why they gave each other a kiss and held hands right before they drove off the cliff they were saying their final good byes bc they knew this was it. The original ending where it just ends with them in the air is more about leaving the ending and what may of actually happened for the viewers to decide. To use their imagination where in this ending it's more realistic bc it shows that they're not escaping alive. The car passing one of the mountains before they vanish completely symbolizes them carrying on spiritually in my opinion.

here's an alternate ending: what if they flew off the cliff and then jumped from the car onto another cliff...from there they come across a mysterious opening in the cliff's wall, they go through it and it leads them to an underground passageway leading to Mexico... and then we see them take on new names and start a new life (images of them showing them getting new ID, photos etc, there is no more dialogue at this point)...the camera pans away from them as they separately go to sleep in their own home's somewhere in Mexico...the camera pans out from the outside of their homes and further, further away into space and then fades, THE END.

Why did they throw themselves off a cliff because they were afraid to get caught!? I don't blame Louise for what she did to that man who attacked Thelma but this movie was awesome and had girl power written all over it? I cant believe this movie is like 25 yrs old and Hanz ZImmer is the perfect choice for the soundtrack! Classic movie back in 90s

like you tell every woman/girl to drive off a cliff.

they came for a good time, a holiday away from work, enroute Telma got abused, and she learnt strength, and was able to go for Brad Pitt, whom told her how to steal. When things got bad for Louise, she got her money which was stolen - one heck of an adventure considering the rapest got shot. so it wasn't their fault that the world was short of the rapest. so when they were cornered - they wanted to go south and went south futher to Mexico, but were stopped - now imagine if the cliff on the other side was Mexico and on the rock which they road off was America. Mexico = freedom/ different laws, and America is home for prison = they completed their jeourney they were forced on because of the rapest. No rape would have been a short holiday around America states for a couple of weeks before going back to work.
why do you think Louise wanted the money, the emergency money from her boyfriend whom hand delivered it to her.
It really is a classic and great film

I realize it was filmed in Dead Horse Point State Park, but it was a stand-in for the Grand Canyon. The script says they drove off the Grand Canyon. The movie starts in Arkansas, through Oklahoma, New Mexico (because Louise wants to avoid Texas at all costs) and ends at the Grand Canyon in Arizona. But in reality the film was shot in California and Utah.
Movies do this a lot. For example, "Moonstruck" is set in NYC, but it was filmed in Toronto.

Obviously they still die, but the car driving towards the mountains, I assume is like an afterlife thing. Somewhere beyond everything we know, they are free, without worry, and driving together for eternity. That's my thoughts.

I have to wonder if Louise would have actually been charged with "murder" and if Thelma would have been charged with "accessory to murder" considering what happened at the truck stop. Thelma was punched in the face by a man who was attempting to rape her, and Louise shot that man to death. 1) The rapist could have easily overpowered Thelma and killed her with her own gun, had she not shot him first. 2) Considering that Thelma was battered and nearly raped by the man that Louise shot to death, that sounds like a mitigating factor in getting the accessory to murder charge thrown out.
