Be careful when using slate like this to build fireplaces. This is a sedimentary stone and is prone to thermal shock when heated. It can actually explode and throw sharp shrapnel everywhere.

Slate plates are special. In the Rhine area in West Germany between Cologne and Mainz many steep wineyards are stabilised with slate plate walls looking similar to those in this video. Seem to be very stable stone walls.
