100% you should include a secret door disguised as a bookcase/panelling/whatever! With a house that size how can you not!? Definitely something to have fun with!
Coming from a colder country (Sweden) I’m always stunned of the lack of isolation you guys have in your houses. Under the floorboards, between rooms (takes away a lot of noise) and here in the entry way. It doesn’t only isolate from the cold you know, it also isolate from the really hot summer days. I noticed the same when I lived in LA.
Growing up in New England, with my parents in 1950’s, we bought a colonial home built in the 1600’s. We stripped layers of wallpaper and paint off the walls and floors. My uncle, a painter by trade, removed 16 layers of paint from the wainscoting! Twelve rooms, eleven staircases, 52 windows with Indian shutters, sixteen fireplaces (4 charcoal fireplaces and smoker room in the attic). My father and I installed 4000 ft of wiring 1500 feet of plumbing. A learning experience. Your work brings back a lot of memories! Good luck
Wow, that sounds like quite the undertaking. I admire anyone who chooses to take on this major job. Just makes it so worth it. The character and history is amazing.
Stained glass as your planning for the kitchen would also look great in the upper archway of the interior front door. IMO it would help blend the door in with its Victorian home.
You are working so hard, passed your house last Friday evening, many lights on you were working late into the evening, passed it many times over many years, lovely to see it coming back to life
You can get from the library to the kitchen for a quicker guess , kitchen, miss scarlet with the lead pipe , im thinking of cluedo arent I, its all the talk of hidden passages
I agree with your idea of reopening the original doorway into what will be your billiard room. The traffic pattern makes more sense and is more cohesive. The paneled secret door is perfection. Great work!
Spider? In Australia, i relocate huge huntsmen spiders with a gentle fluffy duster - they're actually remarkably shy & not aggressive & you have to be gentle to not damage their long legs. Generally, it's pretty easy to get any spider to either cling to the duster, or drop into a deep plastic container & walk outside with them & shake them off.
Yall are doing this SO Efficiently, such good ideas, and problem solving when you run into issues. As well as so kind and patient with each other, its so nice to see!
Do the bookshelf with a hidden door! I grew up with a hidden door in our Library that opened up into a bar behind the paneling. The house was built during Prohibition in the U.S. It was very cool!
I love this series. Y'all are a great young couple. I love the UK, but have never spent time in Wales. I couldn't imagine buying such a fine old house for renovation at your age. It is going to be a show place when y'all are done. Best wishes from Mississippi.
This would be my ultimate dream, buying a big old derelict house and bring it back to life. However my husband hasn’t repaired our tiny bathroom ceiling in 2 years so I’m guessing a whole house would be an impossible task 🙈😂
Why don’t you repair the bathroom ceiling. Why are you waiting for your husband 🤷🏻♂️. As a couple you both get stuck in to do your home up. The days of men doing all the building work are as backwards women chained to the kitchen sink. Equality!
Hi! Milly, this technique will make screwing in the plaster board easier on you: keep 2 drills with you. One should have the screw bit in it and the other should have a drill bit (skinnier than the screw). Use the drill bit to bore through the plaster board and the metal channel. Then, use the other drill go easily screw in the screw. It may seem more cumbersome, but you don't have as much arm strength as Louie and the crew, and they may not realize how difficult it can be for you to have to use your weight behind it and yet be in control of it.
A secret door, yes. Think of the fun you could have with it. Thanks for letting the spider live. They do more good than what we think. Look forward to the next video. Most of the old homes here in New Zealand are being demolished, which is a shame.
Top end plasterers are the ones that charge twice as much as everyone else, mid to late 30's, and they can do an 18x12m basement perfectly in 4 hours by themself. They are also not booked up for months in advance like most plasterers because they only do the jobs they want. So they show up on time. Especially with your damp issues, you may have blow-outs and issues down the line; the best plasterers will be straight round to redo it no charge. It's the only trade I always spend top dollar for instead of doing it myself.
Hi Millie and Louis! Wow, I'm blown away by you two. You're both 'ol souls. Incredibly wise. Where did Louis get his training from. He's a master craftsman in his 20's!!!
When you do the little cut in of the layout to show where in the house you are or what doorway you're talking about etc, could you make it bigger? It's a little small in the corner even for youtube. Love watching you guys tackle this beautiful property :) Love the hidden doorway idea, do it!!! Every old mansion needs a hidden doorway, surely?
loving the music that you matched so well w/the work going on. This is a lot of work, plus having another job to go to. There are some videos on yt re:how to turn a bookcase into a hidden door...
In my town I actually saw a sharpenerfor the flat carpenter's pencil, at first glance it looks like ordinary pencil sharpener, but it's not! I wished that I had seen it when my father was still alive, he was a carpenter. I remember him using his pocket knife to sharpen his pencils. You mentioned all the time(=labour) that you saved just adding all the new materials to the old walls, but you also saved a ton of money on disposal fees. And honestly I would probably just bury, any cement/concrete, bricks/stone, and tile that I couldn't reuse, in the garden some where(good for drainage of the soil. I might have put insulation in that cavity above the front door when it was open, if there was some available. I got the Darma reference, but I more than twice you age, so of your audiance will.😉 I was taught that when ever I'm using paint or something similar I should always have a clean rag handy, in case of drips, or....... 😄The spider incident!🙃 Even a piece of rope could have help stablize the scaffolding on the stairs.
This really is a home for life for you both. You'll never outgrow it should you have a family in the future. It's beautiful and i am happy you are renovating for yourselves rather than its resale value.
And not only that, you can get an extension pole to attach the roller. Please, for the love of everything, buy some REAL scaffolding! Both of you scare me to death on your makeshift boards! Thanks! 😀
Love the vids, so jealous. The only comment I would make was when you had the boards on the rest and the stairs, I would have put the spare one under the end away from the stairs just in case you strayed over the pivot point.
Concerned about condensation forming behind the plasterboard/ insulation. Didn't look like any vapour barrier behind the plasterboard or allow ventilation to keep it dry/aired. Think it would of been better to let the old walls breath, re lime plaster and accept the heat loss. Think it would of been cheaper to chase out the electric cables etc, rather than fixing a load of plywood, plasterboard and gypsum plaster over the top.
Absolutely listen to the voices warning you of the condensation problems… and please do not take safety on the job too light-heartedly… Accidents happen when you least expect it. You can kill an old house like this if condensation and damp build up everywhere… Maybe get a second opinion on it?
Condensation will not be an issue in open spaces. You are referring to "interstitial condensation" which forms either in rooms susceptible to condensation - bathrooms, bedrooms, for example, but not in the areas that these guys are forming. Adequate heating and ventilation, as well as the elimination of cold spots via the addition of insulation, will reduce the potential for condensation. Therefore, what these guys are doing, is correct. (and yes, I am a damp surveyor)
Love following you guys on your journey, you’re a natural in front of the camera and I enjoy the content it’s very engaging, I hope your channel grows and in turn helps you guys along the way! Keep up the great work guys. Can’t wait to see it all come together :) x
Yes vote to the secret entrance! It will totally be worth undoing the bit of plaster work long term and really make the hallway and fireplace a statement too. Keep having fun on your project, I loved your 'tell me a fact game' last time whilst keeping each other motivated through the graft 😂 would love to know your background and inspiration for taking a project on x
Hey Millie and Louis, I've binged just about all of your long form content, but wanted to let you know that Better Help has some pretty serious allegations against them. I hope that you can find the time to do a little research for yourselves ❤️ This house is coming along beautifully, and I love that you're sharing it with us. Thank you!
I definitely like the idea of a hidden door to balance the space either side of the fireplace but also make the two areas usable in the way you want to. 😊
I'm so loving what you two are doing! It's just so fun to keep track through your videos. I think you should either make a secret door that blends in with paneling or else cover that space and just use the other doorway. It'll look wonky if the fireplace isn't balanced in that space (imho,
I love a secret door, but for access to your downstairs loo (when you're on your 6th pint of lager in the pool room), it may make sense to leave things as they are... otherwise you're walking out of the room into the hall to go back on yourselves again
100% you should include a secret door disguised as a bookcase/panelling/whatever! With a house that size how can you not!? Definitely something to have fun with!
Agree 💯👍
It's perfect for a built in bookcase-door.
I think with the open plan from the hall to pool room would be lovely
Why not!
Ooooh ya nice idea

Rooms must have felt marginally larger lol

I was LOST, now i'm found!
‘Well done’ and ‘good job’ to Millie as I don’t think she gets enough appreciation! 👏
The pencils are flat so they don’t roll off work tables. Also they are half an inch and quarter (I think) inch wide and high! Easy measurement tool :)
Definitely disguise the door in paneling. Your house is perfect for creating lots of hidden rooms.
The weather in swansea has been awful this summer. We live just up the road and pass each day. Can’t wait to see the finished job.
Discovered that my ancestors are from Swansea, Merthyr Tydfil, and Aberdw. We visited in June of 2023. I am loving watching this.
12:25 definitely got the reference to Lost 😅
I'm really glad you saved the spider ❤
Unless it was a house spider 🕷
Hidden doors and passages are always a fun part of an old house! It's coming along nicely! Thanks Ray 🇨🇦
You can get from the library to the kitchen for a quicker guess , kitchen, miss scarlet with the lead pipe , im thinking of cluedo arent I, its all the talk of hidden passages
Yes absolutely add the secret door!!! The panelling will balance each side of the fireplace visually and the idea of a secret door is magical
I definitely got your Dharma Initiative reference from Lost.
Came for the reno 🏠 Stayed for the Northern Soul 🎼🎵🎶
Just want to say I love all the music by black artist in these videos! Well done
I agree with your idea of reopening the original doorway into what will be your billiard room. The traffic pattern makes more sense and is more cohesive. The paneled secret door is perfection. Great work!
I feel like the door is to close to the fireplace. But if you make it a hidden door. That would be dope!! Nice idea
So invested in this journey! Also loving the music choices.
That scaffolding looked really shakey. However, I knew it was going to be fine because there was an episode 10
Lmao
Its worth being subscribed just for the soundtrack!

So true
This would be my ultimate dream, buying a big old derelict house and bring it back to life. However my husband hasn’t repaired our tiny bathroom ceiling in 2 years so I’m guessing a whole house would be an impossible task 🙈😂
😂😂😂 so human!!! Like the majority of us. I hope they get this all done before they are 30.

Secret room definitely. I would make that a flat wall to give that section balance.
Just finished watching "LOST" from beginning to end. I got the Dharma reference. 😉
Louis is a SAINT to save the spider.

You guys need to hug once and a while.. ps.. green is definitely the best colour choice for that front hall! 🫣😆🙏🏼👏🏻👏🏾👏🏻👏🏾👏🏻
Love the bar room idea… very fitting for the style of the house
Loving your green ponytail 😂 and really like the sound of the hidden door would be really fun when you've got guests over!
Absolutely yes to to secret door in the panelling. The uneven alcove and door that is currently there makes me uneasy.
Ohhhh!! Wales. For some reason I thought you were in London! And yes you were deceiving the weather has been beautiful

Speakeasy / secret door!!! YES!!! .. great idea! .. thoroughly enjoying your videos!! .. can hardly wait for the next one!!
