Now, this is how you party!!!❤❤❤❤😊 Only the baby boomers know about this kind of Rockin R&B. Red Prysock also plays this kind of music. Check him out when you can. Thanks Gary for the post!
FANTASTIC! I'd known Big Jay from just one record, his wonderful blues song, "There's Something on Your Mind" from 1957. (Many artists did excellent covers, such as Etta James and BB King.) Only today did I learn that he's a tenor sax great, and the vocals on "Something" were by Little Sonny Warner. TH-cam is such a wonderful creation. Thanks for posting this. Long live this great music.
I saw a documentary that had him as one of the featured guys, and it blew my mind what a bad bad man he was, and how nobody I knew had ever really heard of him. You can't tell me this guy isn't worth the price of admission anywhere he shows -- wonder if he has an understudy that will keep it going! Thanks for sharing!
@googuse In England us spazzy white people clap on the 2 and 4, The 1 and 4 thing seems to be curiously European, as does clapping with apparantly no concern for the timing of the tune! But as long as they're enjoying it! ;)
On the Oldies show "A Long,Long Time Ago" I hear another Big Jay McNeely instrumental, from 1953...That one is called "3-D". Do you have the stuio recording (or even live) on of that?
looks like the last days of Detroit Golden age, when white people could still enjoy black music with no second thoughts about going back home before dark...
Other than tone, I see nothing special here. Playing the same riffs and same note over and over does not make one a saxophone genius. It's a fun thing but not on the level of a Sonny Rollins or a John Coltrane. Even Jr. Walker is ahead of this honking party.

Clapping - the thing you do when you want to dance but you know you shouldn't/can't.

McNeely, Big Mama Thornton, Koko Taylor, Hank Ballard were the first to rock n' roll, long before Alan Freed coined the phrase.
Swing, Big Jay, SWING!
I like his music a lot. Greetings from The Netherlands.
Mr. Big Jay Is My Idol Forever!! Thanks!
Leaves me breathless Gary,..fabulous stuff
You and Daryl Taylor was swinging for real.

What a beautiful voice I love this song my. How are you Isabel Llanas ?
Hey, my roommate is on piano!!
how did so many "beat deaf" people end up in the same room?
+randi thistle haha agreed!
They were given so many cues as to when to begin clapping and they ignored every single one. Kind of amazing when you think about it.
Musicianship may not be for everyone, but clapping on 2 and 4 is really a crucial life skill that should be taught in school
Fun fact: at one point he quit the music industry and became a letter carrier.

This is R&B
The great Gene Vincent also recorded this song!!!
I apologize for my race and our lack of feeling time.

The woman at 2:00 with the arms crossed defensively looks like she doesn't know whether to shit or go blind while her hubby does the dork act.
looks like the last days of Detroit Golden age, when white people could still enjoy black music with no second thoughts about going back home before dark...
What year is this performance?
I'm guessing early 80s.
in what year was this recorded (the video)?
Wow - this rocks, even with the spazzy white people clapping on the 1 and 3.
Awesome gig. White folks clapping off beat. LOL!
What's that got to do with anything. Such a stupid thing to say! The main thing must be people are enjoying the music!
Thanks white people. Don't clap if you can't keep time. Listen to the snare please. That should help.
Woman @ 1:25...no rhythm

I think you're looking for jazz. This is rock and roll.
jazz was once about dancing and having fun too
Man ! that kat can still blow !
