I only use food Storage Containers for certain items... Crackers, Cookies, things that can go stale if not stored effectively.
I also use Airtight Containers for sugar , brown sugar, and the Flours that I use, but I leave the Flour in its packaging.... it's just easier, the whole package goes into a container that it will fit in. I am a former Professional Housekeeper/ Organizer and I do agree with keeping it simple if you have small children, a spouse ,etc. ...Things can STILL be " organized " using basic techniques and consistency. I also found, over the years - That keeping extras of an item in certain rooms is beneficial. You always know where they are ...there's a pair of Scissors in the kitchen.... a pair of Scissors by the front door area( stored up in a wall bin ) ...A pair of Scissors in the Lounge( stored in a drawer ) so there's no running to another room to get those.
I always have Paper Towels in my bathroom, as well, not just in the kitchen. I think it's important to " keep things where one uses them " ... No matter if it's nail Polish or whatever you're using .... ; if you like to do your nails in the living room, then find a beautiful lidded Box to store all your products and it's right there where you want to use it. I just think that trying to dedicate everything to a bathroom and then you have to go retrieve everything is - to me- just silly...... Put things where you use them. Where they're accessible. I keep my hand cream/ lotion in a taller ,but lovely metal bin ... it's where I can use it anytime. I also keep extea hand cream in a pretty wire type thing that sits on my kitchen counter.
I don't subscribe to the " Marie Kondo " way of folding all those clothes. Lol..except certain ones, and for travel, it does help. But " Everyday Life "...No. lol.

I love Cass from Clutterbug. She also says there are 4 different types of people and they need to organize in their style. Example: butterflies--are visual organizers and need everything to look pretty.

For the life of me, I cannot recall what styles go with what bugs and that frustrates me.
To clarify, any “bug” may want things to look pretty. The styles speak to whether your organizing style is micro or macro, and then whether you need your systems to be hidden or visible.
@@charmaccents6278 if you can remember that butterflies spend their time fluttering about from flower to flower looking pretty (visual, macro because they’re enjoying the flowers and don’t have time to waste on organizing systems) then it makes all the others easier. Bees may also move quickly from flower to flower, but they are intent on hiding all their honey in a well organized hive (hidden, micro). I can’t remember crickets and ladybugs as easily, but Cass is a cricket and I know she likes visual, macro systems.
I loved your garbage bag challenge! I always have 2 bags in the garage; 1 for donations & 1 for trash. I try at least 3 times every week to put something in both bags. A washcloth, old pair of shoes, old kitchen utensils etc...once the bags are filled I take to the trash or to donation. It's amazing how much stuff you can get rid of :)
🥰 I love what you said about decanting pantry items into clear or other storage. It looks SO PRETTY, and I'm always a little envious when I see someone else's pantry who has taken that step, but in reality, it's just too much trouble for me and my life. The stuff doesn't always fit into the new container, so then you not only have the pretty container, you also have to find space to store the leftover amounts in the original packaging, the new ingredients wind up on top of the older ingredients at the bottom of the container, which never get used up (which means they are going bad/rancid and could cause problems with the fresher top ingredients, as well), you lose the nutritional and recipe information on the original packaging (as well as any use-by dates) unless you cut those parts out and attach them to the new bins... It's just an unwieldy and unrealistic system for me. The only exceptions in our house are the flours and sugars. Because they come in packaging that is so messy once it's opened, I do decant those, but I made sure to buy containers that would fit the entirety of the original contents.
My favorite piece of home-organizing advice is to store things as close to where you use them as possible. It's so much more convenient to have a storage box with all the pet supplies (for example) and keep it in the cabinet closest to their food bowls or where we groom them or wherever we'd most likely need an item from that box. Or a box of all the vacuum attachments and parts near where we store the vacuum, etc. My hubby has a bad habit of just stashing things wherever he finds room, then I can never find anything when I go looking for it. It's very frustrating! I've been trying to train him out of that habit by giving him clearly defined (and labeled!) spaces for the items he typically tosses into the wrong storage spots. It does appear to be helping!
I like to put things in clear containers for the simple reason you can see when you are running low/out. Too many boxes of stale crackers and cereal made me change to clear containers. They may not be “toss in” abled, but they sure have saved me a lot of money and tossing out food.
THIS EXACTLY. We have a large family so I end up with a clear container AND whatever didn’t fit. 🤦🏽♀️

🥰 In home organizing, there is always this dynamic tension between making things visible (in order to avoid losing things in your own home and unnecessarily buying things you cannot find) versus having a clean, smooth, uncluttered, visual space. Gah! My solution was to buy some multi-drawer cabinets from IKEA in a nice, matte, white. These have been broadly categorized (medical, makeup, office supplies, DIY supplies, etc.) and look very clean and uncluttered while the drawers are closed, but when I open a drawer, everything is easily visible within the drawer: there's that hairbrush...oh yes, I do still have some painter's tape...oops, almost out of my multi-vitamins, etc. If it's something you need to grab and go (e.g. a first-aid kit needed out on the carport) then a well-labeled box in the "medical" cabinet drawer is so much better than a bunch of loose supplies, or a first aid kit crammed behind other stuff under the bathroom sink. To me the hardest part is organizing things the first time and memorizing the location of each broad category. Once that part is done, I can reach for a protein bar or a comb or a pair of scissors or my favorite lipstick without having to really think about it or search for it. Easy-peasy.
🥰 Excellent tips!! That first one was a good one to get rid of... putting newly arrived oatmeal (or whatever) on top of the older product just isn't a good idea. Use the older stuff up first then put the latest into the bin. But I love the idea of the 'top shelf' makeup items to keep by themselves to streamline getting ready in the morning. That brush holder looks like a game changer, too!! Thanks Brittany!!
I pour out the old rest, fill in the new product and put the old rest on top. it's easy.

🥰 Fun fact for me the decanting falls into the 1 minute rule. I have clear lightweight containers and it takes me no more then a minute to empty the packaged food in them. But this has saved me so much mess. The containers are easy to access for my kids so they can make their own breakfast. So for me decanting is a game changer

Great tips! 🥰 I’m appreciated your comments on the clear pantry bins being a hassle and taking up precious time! I agree and was frustrated when an entire bag or box didn’t fit in the plastic bin, meaning I now had a full bin and partial box to deal with later. Not to mention that I needed to keep the lot numbers and expiration dates. Loved the tips!

🥰 Yessss! Decanting everything in the pantry did NOT work for me! I think decanting works best for things like snacks or bars. Not oats, flour, cereal, etc.

That’s what I do decant! Cereal goes stale quick and multiples (4 kids)! I cant decant pasta or crackers!
normally what i do if i don’t have time to decant everything when i get home from food shopping is i’ll just put it all away in its original packaging and then i’ll set aside an hour on the weekend to decant it

For me it's cereal, flour, sugar etc. Things that have flimsy packaging and make big mess if spilled. Crisps, bars and such have durable packaging and and are easy to pick up .
I use magazine holders for vacuum cleaner bags. You can stick them to the wall for easy access! I also like over the door hanging shoe holders with pouches. I use them for cleaning supplies and vacuum cleaner attachments. They can also be cut into smaller sections of pouches for other uses.

🥰 great tips! I hate systems that fail and I always try to analyse why! This was great insight to some of my potential pitfalls. Personally I hate boxes and packaging as it takes up so much space so I try to decant as much as possible. Label maker has been a game changer but my husband is also hopeless. I don’t understand why they cannot commit to systems 😞

My husband asked me where the flannels live. Married 7 years. We have 5 kids . He doesn’t know where we keep the flannels … talk about mental load
I'm surprised he even knows what flannel is. Pajamas, or sheets ?
To make my own labels, I take a peace of scotch tape, write what I want on it with a black sharpie, and apply the tape on the box/ bin. Efficient and very economical.

I do have a request for a different type of organization video that I’d truly appreciate you doing if possible…Storing bulk size items! We are a family of 5 that shops at Sam’s Club or Costco to try and save money BUT we have a small kitchen that doesn’t even have a pantry or much storage space and no basement. I really struggle trying to find ways to keep the jumbo sized everything (that do save us money) organized and fresh. For example buying the huge bag of flour as we try to make as much homemade items as possible but cannot fit the ginormous bag. So I fill up an airtight container to keep in the kitchen, the bag in the coat closet and refill as necessary. But there has to be a better, smarter, easier way than having huge bags in the coat closet, cans in one of the three kids closets, dried pastas in another’s room, etc. I’m sure there are others that can relate to this situation. The other part of the issue is that it’s quite a drive to Costco and Sam’s is in the states so we can’t go very often. Meaning we bring home a lot but only what’s needed. Thank you again,
