I think the bar it's self is a good idea. Not just because it comes off easy but it give you the ability to mount other stuff and move the windshield to suit your needs. (higher/low etc.)
2:23 It's nice to finally hear someone else that doesn't like a cell phone mounted on your handlebars. It's too easy to damage one when I unintentionally stop to pick up a dirt sample.
The cracks are most likely from the loctite. The fumes that it emits are terrible for some plastics and it only takes a little to cause issues. It's a pretty common issue with motorcycle windshields and loctite.
Yes I have experienced this with my 2012 goldwing while reinstalling my fairing. I was worried about fasteners falling out due to vibration. Ever part of the plastic where lock tight was used the plastic cracked. A really expensive mistake. I read on a hobby form that loctite and ABS plastic have some sort of chemical reaction when the loctite sets up it makes the plastic very brittle.
I’ve got a Madstad adjustable windshield on my DR650. It’s the older version that mounts to the bar clamps. But, like just about any windshield for the DR650, it mounts the windshield much closer to your body than is typical for an ADV bike. The “guillotine” risk is real. The first time I got whacked under the chin bar by my windshield, I realized that it was not something I want to ride off-road with. Thankfully, it comes off easily and quickly, so I just take it off at the trailhead. Easily removable is a must for any DR650 windshield large enough to give you any real wind protection. It sure is great on the highway, though! 😃
Sometimes I daydream about a quick-swap rally/road faring for the trip to the offroad place, like I can do with my "ADV" helmet peak, but then I realize how many of my rides are loops. :(
Trash can DIY screen is still the best for the dr, keeps the wind off your chest and if you take a tumble offroad it wont hurt ya. you can make it any height you want so you can easily tune that perfect setup. you could still have the mounting bar in place too. Its a windscreen, you shouldn't be looking through on a dualsport its to take the wind off your chest for a smooth ride. Windshields you see through are for a touring/big bike setup.
Finally, a well reasoned and logical approach. As riders we often chagrin car drivers for not seeing us (they do they just either don't register us in their brains or don't fear any consequence of hitting a motorcycle in a physical sense) and yet one of the most common ways to mount something in the direct line of sight is to put some GPS, phone or other device right there. How about it fellow riders? If you see someone in a car with a phone mounted above the dash that blocks some of their view do you think thats safe? If they swerved into you would you not go screaming all get out about how they had something blocking their view? Of course you would, and you'd be right. That is why there are laws about vehicle drivers not being allowed to mount things that block their critical view of the road ahead, the phone or tablet might be blocking their view of YOU! Right? Yet we have plenty of riders with things like phones to tablets to GPS, cameras and everything else mounted in their field of vision and thinking it's cool. It isn't, it's dangerous. As riders we complain loudly about distracted driving yet decide to mount all kinds of stuff right in the line of vision. How smart is that? We we as riders somehow better equipped to see through these devices? You can see riders on the roads fingering their phones, reaching up to turn on their cameras, tap to see the latest email and because they ride they get a pass. Explain how that isn't so.
When I watched the episode where you installed it, I couldn't understand why you wanted to use a dark screen. What was the purpose? There was virtually no reflection or distortion with the clear screen I chose for the DR. Indoors with overhead lights and a super clean windshield may cause some reflection, but outdoors, none. After awhile, I didn't even notice the windscreen unless there was a big bug splat or something.
Hi Ben I bought a similar but clear screen from ebay . The difference being is it screwed up tothe headlight surround. I'm sure you can swap it out for the clear if you want to.
It’s a 650 on off road bike not a touring bike, that’s why you need a few bikes for every situation, tell the wife, I have 13 bikes and each one has its faults but there motorcycles not cars
I played around with a dark screen on my old Concours 1000 back in the day and it was a flat no go. Even on sunny days it was odd and I couldn't adjust to having a tinted piece of transparent plastic blocking parts of my view. At night it was a little scary, at night in the rain is was terrifying and no it wasn't so tall I was looking though it, I could still see over it but it was just wonky. I haven't had a tinted shield on any bike since. LOL Another great video....
Appreciate this build, and your honest opinions. I'm considering selling my Tiger 800xc and going for a DR and doing a build similar to this one. Same situation also, have about an Hr ride to the trails..
I put a Puig type windscreen lip on my DR650 number plate and it worked excellent for touring. It juist shoots a wall of air up and pushes a lot of horizontal wind blast away. Might be worth a shot they are pretty cheap if you buy the knock offs and are always good to have around if you dont like it. I set the angle parallel to the number plate you can feel the blast of wind with your hand when riding
You could buy some suitable polycarb sheet or lexan, whichever is safe, and make your own clearscreen to mount to the bar to your specs. Could even use a heat gun to give it a little lip curve like the BMW F650 wind screen. I hear the lip helps channel the wind up and away.
I need but don't particularly like having wind screen on my drz400s. My setup works and is necessary because my tinnitus gets triggered by loud noises. Young people protect your hearing!
I now see what you mean...or.. I can see clearly now, that the tint is gone.....alright...I cant sing, but I can carry a tune in a bucket and play the radio! Garth
Why ride a old DR with new plastics in the first place..?? I might as well go get my 2000 xr600r with HRC head and cam out of storage and put your 2024 bike to shame

It's quite simple, use the PASTE Loctite. No fumes. 👍🏻🙂

How does the rally tower not have the same issues?
Thanks for the insight.
That rally tower would drive me bonkers but people adjust.
Trex racing bracket and large screen for the DR650….perfection

That is the worst looking thing I have ever seen.

I routinely put 800 mile days on my heavily modded KLR650.
Great bike

Don't be so dramatic. You can see right through it. It's tinted, not opaque. It makes zero difference on your ability to operate the bike.
@ Not true at all but you’re welcome to your opinion.

Thanks for the info to ponder. I dont have a windscreen on my drz, but ive been thinking about it. I never considered the guillotine effect 🤯

Put the genuine Doubletake mirrors on. The best investment I put on my DR650 was these.
Removed mine. Prefer stock. More stable when riding hard
@darrellhay my shoulders are too wide for the stock mirrors
Stock mirrors are just fine.
I now see what you mean...or.. I can see clearly now, that the tint is gone.....alright...I cant sing, but I can carry a tune in a bucket and play the radio! Garth
I made my own from lexan.
Dude that looks like trash. Not trying to be rude, but why did it take you that long to get it off the bike 😂
It looks great, what do you mean?
We actually ride. You just look.
Why ride a old DR with new plastics in the first place..??
I might as well go get my 2000 xr600r with HRC head and cam out of storage and put your 2024 bike to shame
