    Clear diagram. Error at 1:30, distance would be 2.5 nautical miles, not 2.5 nautical miles per hour. Also time is usually noted as t in minutes, where T is in hours.

    That is a pretty good explanation.
    However in addition to the issue with the distance being described as "2.5 nautical miles per hour" instead of "2.5. nautical miles", it might be clearer if the eventual calculated position did not happen to sit on the original black course line, as this makes it look like it will always be on that line, when in fact that is not the case.
    That course line just sets one side of the triangle, and the position will be somewhere on the line formed in line with the other equal side of the triangle.

    why would the distance to the object be equal to the distance u ve travelled for a certain period of time?

      @@skippercheck_net so does it matter what is the initial bearing, or anything less than 45deg? And if this method always applicable or in some cases you can’t apply it?
