- This video explains the concept of position lines and position circles; and how the intersection of these provide the ship's position at sea.
This video is useful for students learning about chartwork and coastal navigation.
The concept of "Running Fix" and transferring position lines is also discussed using animations.
The effect of wind and current (leeway and set) on a ship's course is also shown and discussed.
Previous videos on chartwork discussed the following:
Information on paper charts: • Information on Paper C...
DR, set, leeway: • Chartwork on ships - D...
Finally a video where It Is explained to put the course and distance position line in ANY point from the 1st bearing in the basic Running fix. Thank you!
As always, a clear and succinct explanation of essential basics. Thank You for all your help

Sir, rising and dipping explain
Isn’t double arrow heads on each end only for celestial ?
I thought it was double arrow heads only one end once it’s been transferred
double arrows indicate transferred position lines (for celestial as well as terrestrial)
Cts, one bearing, one range, current, rate, leeway and error given we have to calculate cmg, smg and position
Explain sir please
06 Jan 2018 question only sir
👍👍👍👍
