    This technique originated on the SP 1200 with the multimode and multilevel function
    it's 8 pads not 16 but the very similar in concept.. great video

    Dude: I love your vids, but I gotta say: the use of Modes in Jazz waaaaaaaay pre-dates the invention of 16 levels on samplers.
    You are correct in asserting that the re-pitching of melodic and harmonic samples does, in essence, result in progressions that could be called Modal.
    But, just to name one example: Kind of Blue of 1959 is only the most famous musical work to deliberately be based on Modes, rather than chords. Miles actually handed out lead charts to the bewildered musicians, right before they were to start playing. The leads did not include the chords that these BeBop guys had come to expect from Miles (who, before, had never seemed to meet an Extended Chord that he did not love), but instead had instructions like: "when we get here, Trane you play this mode. And Bill, when we get to this measure, I need you to go into that mode."
    That was in fact the expressed purpose of the session. Miles, single-handledly gave birth to new forms of music (Cool Jazz, Modal, Fusion) because he'd dive so completely into a form, and learn and dissect it so well, that he'd then get bored with it, "reached it's end", and was then ready to move on-ahead of, and leading-everybody else.
    So, when you're doing Modes, I just need to say: you're not doing Akai, or Roger Linn. You're doing Miles.

    • @mpchead
      @mpchead  3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Hey thanks for the history lessons, I appreciate it. I need to measures my words a bit more. I didn't mean that the 16 levels invented modal music, I was trying to say that it inspired jazz and Neo soul artists to push more towards this aesthetics of the 16 levels.

    • @sprstar618
      @sprstar618 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@mpchead I believe the source from which I received those wonderful stories was a book I read in the '90s: "The Making of Kind of Blue". It totally goes into how Miles came to "discover" Modes (if I'm not mistaken, it was his longtime arranger Gil Evans that had read a book by this brilliant cat who was completely entralled with them-I forget the guy's name).
      Miles had become completely bored with the "Chord Soup" that BeBop had become. Gil mentions this book to him, tells him he needs to read it, he does, and almost instantly Miles "tears up the rule book" and is convinced: this "Modes Thing" is where he's going.
      No one had done it before in a Jazz context (certainly not to this degree) and so when everybody showed up for the Blue sessions, no one-not even Miles-really knew if it would work, or how it would sound. They just took the directions, had faith in their leader, and started playing, and several hours later they had made History. It's an awesome story.
      So you might want to pick up the book-it's a rather short read of maybe 250 pages, and I think you'd like it.
