You can’t beat Holbein, anything. I mostly have their watercolors and some sample sets of their gouache and I love their colors and the quality is superb. But due to their cost….here in the U.S., at least, they’re more than W&N. (Schmincke always gets very high ratings, but in the U.S., they’re even higher than Holbein.) So for now, I’m just sticking mostlyto W&N, and it’s much beloved for its quality too. But I’m keeping my eye out for an artist quality gouache brand that’s more affordable…and that I like a lot!
I couldn’t agree more! I love Winsor and Newton, they are affordable and really good quality. I also wish I could purchase more Holbein, I love their oil paint too, but I feel the same! They are just so costly and hard to find here in South Africa sadly! I’ve just seen that Michael Harding the British brand have launched some gouache. I’m really interested to try them as I love their oil paints!
Art Spectrum is such a great brand and such good quality paint. I have about 4 oil paint colours from them that I bought many years ago and love them but have never tried any of their gouache. The green gold is my fav! I absolutely love the range of colours, very similar colours to our South African climate so it’s such a pity we can’t buy any here in South Africa, I would definitely use them if I could!
Gouache is watercolor that is opaque with less finely ground pigment. It is favored by designers who want an opaque media with a matte finish.. however lightfastness is less of a concern for designers than artists. If you plan to share or sell your work as an artist, check your gouache tubes for how each color is rated for lightfastness. :)

I use a variety of brands and I’ve never had a problem, and I work with oils, acrylic, inks, gouache and watercolour (obviously not all at the same time). I think the trick is to use a good quality paint so that the pigment content is even. Holbein and Winsor and Newton are both good quality with great pigment content (not diluted with too much fillers etc) so they work well together. Another way to judge the pigment quality is to check how much the colour changes when it dries. If it dries a whole lot darker then chances are it has less pigment in the paint.
How much did you pay in general and how much in extra taxes? (Sorry if you gave this info in the video, I was trying to cook dinner while watching 😂 so I likely miss some things
I probably should have documented the price in the video because now a year or so on, I can't remember the exact price. But the set was on special and almost half the price of what I had seen on other sites and the shipping costs were similar to what I would pay from Jacksons in the UK to South Africa. So it was a great deal. But I normally pay about ZAR100-ZAR200 in import duties/taxes so expected something similar. I had never ordered from Japan before and I guess the import duties must be a whack more. Lesson learnt. While I can't remember the exact amount it was definitely almost triple what I was used to and I remember thinking that I could have bought 3 or 4 more tubes of paint for the price of the taxes. Never been brave enough to order from Japan to South Africa again 😂
😂😂clearer as in less messy? Or do you mean you wish to see it? I have 3 parts to my studio, my office/storeroom which is where I am often sitting near a window to film and then I have a kitchen area which is mostly used for washing up studio stuff and then I have a room used for painting and creating in. They all get rather messy as I work full time in there and often on a number of different projects 😝but it’s a bit like organized choas, I know where everything is.

Another way to judge the pigment quality is to check how much the colour changes when it dries. If it dries a whole lot darker then chances are it has less pigment in the paint.
Have you ever tried Daniel Smith?
I haven’t tried the Daniel Smith gouache but I’ve tried the watercolour and I love it!
Ugh, yeah. I see things all the time that look like a great deal……..and then I look at the shipping. 😂😂😢😢
I agree. Such crazy shipping costs and then extra taxes means it has to be a REAALLY fabulous deal for it to be affordable.
I wish your audio was a little clearer!
I'm sorry for the confusion! The audio is fuzzy. It's hard for me to hear and understand you! That's all
