Winsor & Newton for us Europeans, nothing can beat it! ❤ Love your landscapes, Sketches and your videos are always so informative, in just 10 minutes I learn more than in a entire day at a conference or a class 😂❤ LOVE the fugitives, I have them too, so what?? For just sketching, come on, they are delicious.
I loved this video! So much of what you said about setting up a palette of colours resonated with me. I always swatch everything too and fill in the pigment details (because I'm a complete geek about stuff like that 😊). It's easy to get carried away with picking colours just because they look so pretty, then finding out you can mix most if you choose your primaries carefully, as you have done here. As for the difference of zinc white to permanent white - I learned in a recent gouache course I've taken (Vicki McGrath on Domestika) that zinc white is the mixing colour for the early thinner washes in a painting and the permanent white for the last, more opaque layers. This makes sense as it is brighter and more opaque. So I hope that helps! I've only really used W&N and Arteza traditional gouache. I'm in the UK, so its easier and more affordable to get than other brands.
Great video demo. I used Winsor & Newton in college for textile and surface pattern design and I loved it. Such beautiful quality paint. Dried so flat and clean. I haven't used gouache in a long time as I now do acrylic paintings on canvas. But recently I wanted to start painting with gouache again so I bought a 12 pack Essential Set of 'Liquitex Professional' online. When they arrived and I opened the pack I discovered that they are not true gouache at all as the wording on the pack said "Acrylic Gouache'. I was quite disappointed. I hadn't really focused on the image of the pack online as the large heading stood out more where it just said 'Liquitex Professional Gouache'. (I'm kicking myself 😢) Well, I tried them out anyway painting little swatches of each colour in my art notebook to test their opacity, coverage, etc. Only 3 in the pack were actually opaque despite the bottles advising that 10 are opaque. I found the coverage not at all to be as good as the Winsor & Newton that I remember. In my opinion they are just 'Poster Paints.' Definitely Winsor & Newton gouache is my favourite too. Love your doodles, by the way. And such a lovely floral pattern and beautiful landscapes too. Greetings from Galway. ☘🙂
You are an amazing artist and teacher! I’m now not afraid of using Gouche! Windsor Newton is my go too product, and I will now try to find an introductory set. I’m so glad I found you, you are an amazing teacher! Thank you, Karen Dirmish 26:0026:00
I have W&N, Schminke, Daniel Smith and Holbein Gouache. I prefer the Schminke and Daniel Smith…but they are pretty pricey options. I noticed that your W&N PR122 was pretty opaque…mine was very transparent unfortunately.
“So clearly FUGITIVE!” 😂 Perfect way to describe that Magenta. Winsor & Newton is, hands-down, my favorite gouache brand but they are so expensive in the US 😢. To add insult to injury,Jackson’s Art increased the prices for W&N products for US buyers. I’m so sad, but I also like DaVinci gouache, which the most economical of all brands and especially in the US. So, as I use up my Winsor & Newton stash, I’m going to replace them with DaVinci. They don’t have a huge range but, as an example, a 37ml tube of Titanium White is about $7 USD, and the quality is stellar! I love W&N but they don’t love my wallet, so I’ll adjust.
Such a great, informative video. I have recently invested in 16 tubes of the Winsor & Newton gouache, which was a very scary experience due to the cost (I'm in the states) . I will now happily do some color swatching with notes, as you have done, in my sketchbook. I am stunned at how much that I have learned from this video. Thank you!!!
I also got the opera pink just because it’s so bright. In watercolors that is. Who cares if it’ll fade? 😂 Love the details you added in pencil to the gouache!

Fugitives are so much fun, and since I’m a sketchbook girl, I’m good with it! I love how you’ve been doing these floral swatches. Your landscapes are 😍😍😍!
Absolutely loved your video! Thank you so much for being so organized and detailed for us! I´m new to gouache but I only own Winsor and Newton as I really love them in watercolor.

Have you tried adding (and mixing in) some WN Blending Solution to your Prussian Blue when you add it to your palette? Gum Arabic is glue-like so is more likely to make it stiff.

The best way to remember if your blues are warm or cool is this: Blues that lean 'purple are warm'...and...Blues that lean 'green are cool'. Again, I'm sure you already know obviously, but in this video you mentioned that your Ultramarine Blue is the cool blue in your palette because its purplish (I can't remember the exact words but it was something along those lines). Just getting my feet wet with Gouche! I have Holbein and Windsor/Newton, and Himi set. The Himi set is frustrating at times and the Holbein is acrylic gouache. I just got a few colors I like but haven’t tried them out yet. I am still pretty new to gouache versus watercolor but this was very informative thank you

Great video! I love the price / fugitive swatch chart!! I wish W&N were an affordable option in Canada, or that Jackson’s was allowed to ship it to Canada. It’s very expensive here. My local store only has the 6-tube intro set and perhaps 6-8 open stock colour options. For some reason, it’s much easier to buy Maimeri gouache here and I can order Holbein sets online. I did manage to find the 10-tube W&N set on Amazon a couple of months ago, so I do have that! So right now, I have a mixture of tubes from W&N, Maimeri, Holbein and Schmincke… but no clear favourites yet since I haven’t used them enough. That’s my goal for 2023… more gouache practice!
@@SketchesnScrubs I so wish Jackson’s was allowed to ship W&N ship to Canada, it would make the sale so much better! Hullo, I have been looking to get back into painting with gouache. I have been very confused as I never thought of gouache as a permanent medium! All of the paintings I created in the late 1980's and early 1990's were thrown into the trash after they were photographed. So permanence was not an issue. Now looking to start using gouache as a fine art medium I have not found any brand that is good up and down the line. I am looking at creating some paintings in The Studio Ghibli style so gouache is a major consideration. I used Turners why back then, I have only tested a few so far and Holbein has stood out as one of the better brands. It is nicely opaque and has a good amount of information too! I have looked at the W&N paints, yet the prices are not consistent! I am wondering if this is because they have different lines of paints? Like their watercolors having Cotman as student line to W&N Professional watercolors? How do I tell them apart? Thanks for such an informative video.
Hey MJpete! Thank you for watching, I’m glad it was helpful. W&N have different series (prices) of gouache dependent on the pigments - that being said they are all designer gouache (they don’t have a student version vs professional version). The cost difference reflects them being in a different series, similar pricing system to watercolours. If you’re looking for lightfast colours, Holbein (though lovely consistency) isn’t one I’d recommend - a lot of their gouache is either multipigmented or fugitive. Though lightfastness is dependent on colour (with reds, purples usually bring more prone to fading), these brands are where I’d look first: Schmincke Horodam, Daniel Smith, W&N. I’ve used W&N and Daniel Smith and enjoyed them both. I’ve heard good things about Schmincke Horodam (note that Schmincke does have different lines of gouache with Horodam being Artist gouache, designer being similar to W&N and the gouache you described, Akademie being student grade) Hope this helps! Good luck with gouache x
I am new to gouache, I own white nights introductory set of 12, Himi art 18 jelly gouache and a 5 set of m graham primaries plus white and black. I need to play with them. The m graham I noticed are very transparent compared to the other 2.
Sketches and Scrubs, awesome video! May I ask (if you've already done a video, I apologise), how do you stop your stay wet palette going mouldy? I've seen a few people having that problem. 😊 x Nell.
Sorry for the late reply Marjorie - I have a range of pencils, Arrtx, polychromos and luminance and use a mixture of them, although usually for outlines as opposed to any grand details xx
Good informative video once again. So cool to see how much and fast you're learning! I'll be trying to be more artsy the next couple of days and I'm going to catch up with your videos while doing so. Haven't felt like painting and such for a while, but now that I've moved and I'm getting used to the new job i want to start again.
Am I the only person who finds pencil crayons over ganache or watercolour to feel like nails down a chalkboard? It saddens me because the effect is beautiful!!
I haven't tried any professional gouache paints yet but I've heard a lot of good things about Winsor & Newton. I just may give it a go. I do like the Arteza gouache. Very smooth and buttery, but I wouldn't rely on it to be lightfast. 😁

I’ve heard good things about Schmincke Horodam (note that Schmincke does have different lines of gouache with Horodam being Artist gouache, designer being similar to W&N and the gouache you described, Akademie being student grade)
Hope this helps! Good luck with gouache x
Sorry Pete, to add to the above, W&N DO have a student version (silver tubes) that I haven’t tried and don’t recommend.
Windsor and Newton is my favorite so far but so expensive here in America 🥲
Thank you for the video. I’m just getting stared in gouache. Came you tell me what type of paint brush you are using?
I am new to gouache, I own white nights introductory set of 12, Himi art 18 jelly gouache and a 5 set of m graham primaries plus white and black. I need to play with them. The m graham I noticed are very transparent compared to the other 2.
@@SketchesnScrubs you know it!
Beautiful! Do you dry these in a palette and rewet with water just like watercolor?
Sketches and Scrubs, awesome video! May I ask (if you've already done a video, I apologise), how do you stop your stay wet palette going mouldy? I've seen a few people having that problem. 😊 x Nell.
@@SketchesnScrubs thank you so much x
Does a light fastness of "N/A" means it's not at all light-fast?
Painted for 10 hours!! My hero 😂
Oh, and awesome chart btw!!
Wow - what a comprehensive look at these paints. Thanks!
What colored pencils do you use over or with your gouache?
Sorry for the late reply Marjorie - I have a range of pencils, Arrtx, polychromos and luminance and use a mixture of them, although usually for outlines as opposed to any grand details xx
Fantastic share
What did u use to do your swatches on? Is that a sketchbook you made?
Is there a difference between the designer one and the normal gouache?

You’re precious❤
Awww thank you! So are you! ❤️
Good informative video once again. So cool to see how much and fast you're learning!
I'll be trying to be more artsy the next couple of days and I'm going to catch up with your videos while doing so. Haven't felt like painting and such for a while, but now that I've moved and I'm getting used to the new job i want to start again.
Have you tried Winsor & Newton’s blending medium in your Prussian Blue? I’m trying it out in my airtight palette and so far it’s helping.
Am I the only person who finds pencil crayons over ganache or watercolour to feel like nails down a chalkboard? It saddens me because the effect is beautiful!!
I feel the same with soft pastels lol we all have our thing :P you're not alone Jen x
I haven't tried any professional gouache paints yet but I've heard a lot of good things about Winsor & Newton. I just may give it a go. I do like the Arteza gouache. Very smooth and buttery, but I wouldn't rely on it to be lightfast. 😁
