Hello Mr. Funk, I hope ll ts well with you. I am sure that a nice man gets this a lot but thank you. I saw you in St.Louis about 50 years ago ( I was 11 years old). I walked up to you in ( I think ) Kiel Auditorium to ask for your autograph and you were so kind to me. I grew up out in the sticks so my Dad would drive us to St. Louis for the matches about once a month. I was in boots and my "Sunday" cowboy hat. You asked me if I was a real cowboy. I answered something like well Sir, we have cows, hogs and horses and I will never forget your answer. " Well yes sir, you are a cowboy". Man did you ever make my day, week and year ! Again, thank you and your whole family as the Funks were just awesome to me. I just loved Terry as well. As my Dad would say, "He is tougher than a 2 dollar steak". Ha !!!!! My most sincere respect, thanks, and a Christian brother's love for you and the whole Funk clan, Cary Butters P.S. When my brothers and I would move the furniture around ( when our parents were gone ) and we;d have all kinds of matches. I always played you, My brother Rich was Johnny Valentine and biggest brother Marty was Dick " The Bruiser ". YIKES ! Oh. To stay honest if I was feeling my Irish, I would play Pat O'Connor. Another class act like you.
Patera was the man who got Flair into wrestling. The two of them were working as bouncers when Patera decided to become a wrestler and go to Verne Gagne's camp. He then persuaded Flair into going to the camp with him and the rest is history.
I know I am late to the dance here but Harley never held the NWA World Title longer than Dory. He held it more times, for sure, but his first reign lasted almost 2 1/2 years before losing to Rhodes for five days.
I may be one of the very few wrestling outsiders who saw both Funks win their world titles. Tampa for Dory, Miami for Terry. Vince McMahon may make a lot of money, but he should be ashamed of what garbage the WWE has become. The days of the Funks, Briscos, Malenko, Johnny Valentine, Ric Flair, Harley Race, The 4 Horsemen, etc. - will never be recaptured. Sad.
+Old Car Guy WWE isn't categorized as the same as this. Anyone who has followed for years would know this is "Rasslin"...and Vince's crap is "Sports Entertainment"..
Just something to help a guy or territory out. In each case, they were satisfied with Race as champ. Dusty didnt like his quickie title reigns but when he was booker, he booked himself another quickie run.
JohnBlack2345 that way they could say Rhodes was the champ for the rest of eternity. It proved that he couldhave his day at any time. It was a needed dynamic that served its purpose nightly in mmy opinion
oooh, that's a good one! from what i know/heard, & i trust my sources, harley wasn't made aware of the finish in the rich case. they didn't tell him it was gonna be a title drop, they just did it without telling race, & he was pissed. same for rhodes. after realizing their fuck up, the promotion made it right.
I know this has been a while but I had to comment. It was planned for Rich to win the title. Race knew that. This comes straight from the referee of the match whose name escapes me, and Ole Anderson who was the booker. It was done to get Rich over and to show the title can change anywhere at any time.Rhodes first title win was also planned.
shit, my bad, you're right, thanks & sorry. i must be gettin' old. it may have been the 5 day rhodes reign that messed me up, but that's no excuse. take care!
Shitholes!!!!!!!! St Louis was the wrestling Mcca in the territorial days and this was St Louis TV in The Chase Hotel in a TV studio in the building. I wrestled there myself. It was an honor for promoter Sam Muchnick to even let you wrestle there, even on TV. Besides, Dory would never take your job from you as you fear. Pat Patterson might though.
Dory funk jr.was and still is a bad ass .hes a real world champ.
If you find Dory Funk Jr. boring...you are definitely not a true student of the sport.

No stupid bubblegum drama, no bullshit, just pure talent and carisma !

Brian Washington. Tell us something we don't already know! We can read too!
That toe hold could truthfully wreck a man's leg.
@mkl62 From 1969 (Gene Kiniski) to 1973 (Harley Race). Dory and Terry are the only brothers to hold this belt. And both were beaten by Race.
I know I am late to the dance here but Harley never held the NWA World Title longer than Dory. He held it more times, for sure, but his first reign lasted almost 2 1/2 years before losing to Rhodes for five days.
Great wrestling. Thank you for these videos!
Good match but Dennis Stamp would've had a better match with Dory than anyone else could've
Dory Funk, Jr. was the NWA World's Heavyweight Champion for all of 1970.
Well between Jr, Brisco, and Race
Great match! #connectingpeoplethroughwrestling

Please upload!!!
HC4843 no bro dammmm
@mkl62 funk jr. was champ for 4 years straight, second longest run next to harley race.
Next to Lou Thesz.
I remember this match. My dad made me leave before it was over because we had to go work on a car. lol, I was so mad at him. lol.
Flair had wonderful matches with Dory Jr. and Terry. Awesome.

Baba paid the boys well in Japan. No dive promotion in this case!
I still cannot believe why the NWA gave Rhodes that title for 5 days. Did the same thing with Tommy Rich. What was the point?

😆😀😉
funk was a real world champ, watched a few of them when he was champ and the man was the real deal. he and brisco held clinics.
Annoying as hell to watch...so I didn't finish watching it
You are right St Louis, was the Mecca. I use to go to the Kiel to watch live wrestling.
