    Double Cross by Magic Smith | Live Performance and Review - The Matt Test
    Matt works in Craig's office in the sales department. He loves magic and reacts REALLY well but is constantly trying to work everything out. He is also a REALLY intelligent guy! In the Matt Test, Craig shows Matt a trick and he talks about what he thinks about the routine and whether it is any good from his point of view.
    This week Matt and Craig look at Double Cross by Magic Smith. Double Cross is a super visual routine that takes inspiration from the classic making ash jump from your hand to the spectator’s hand. This variation features the magician drawing an X in the middle of your palm before closing it into a fist and then making the X vanish into the hand of your spectator. Craig performs the main routine to Matt and shows exactly what the trick is capable of.
    Will Double Cross survive The Matt Test? Find out in this video!

    That’s a great conversation. This is a year old hidden gem

    This is a great analysis from Matt. However my favourite Matt reaction is on the Netrix and with the signature rope routine

    Agree one of the best Matt tests...! This is quite an awesome idea to do the Matt tests! Keep doing them, they give a great perspective on what lay people see, even if they love and break down magic! Keep expanding on this idea!

    Holy fuck! I was not expecting that deep analysis by Matt! It was so profound! That said look at the moment of astonishment, I will keep doing DC for this

  • @magicisbs
    @magicisbs ปีที่แล้ว +4

    I will say that after owning both versions and performing DC religiously for the past 6 years or so, that the heart (red pen) version is no where near as good as the original. I agree that the heart is too perfect, it’s not as noticeable and is much smaller than the cross. I also believe that DC is much better performed while standing. When seated at a table it makes the “dirty work” feel more awkward and not as natural. In my performance I allow a decent amount of time delay and then afterwards once the spectator opens their hands and they react, I switch out the DC marker for a normal Sharpie. I do this only for my own comfort, only once or twice has someone asked to see if it’s just a Sharpie or a “magic marker” pun intended*. In my personal opinion I believe Double Cross is more effective than Lux. The moment of magic feels more pure and organic and you don’t have so many restrictions as you do with Lux. Yes, you can perform Lux in any lighting conditions, however it’s more effective in a dim lit setting.

      The cross also looks too perfect, I mean..... It's a stamp, it's obvious that it will look perfect, but I agree with you that the red one is even more suspicious

    The cigarette ash trick was not just a gag, if you did it right it would blow people away I used to do it all the time when more people smoked. But you had to frame and present it right.

    I feel for Matt on this analysis. He obviously just wants to enjoy the trick and, as he was forced to work this one out, you could see the wonder disappearing.

  • @dylanbphone
    @dylanbphone ปีที่แล้ว

    Yeah I'd argue the heart is a part of what gives away the stamp aspect. Check mark or X is better in my opinion. Also I have a fail proof way of making the X disappear and it doesn't involve saliva.

    I loved Matt's commentary on this. Especially as a childhood doer of the ashes effect. Let's also be real though that Craig helped lead Matt to the solution here! Craig really likes Lux and it must work for him. He's an incredible magician so that much must be true. But I just can't understand the draw of a wacky, gizmo type effect like Lux, over something so streamlined, pure, and organic as double cross. It's easy to understand, hard-hitting magic, while Lux feels like you have some special gadget. Just my own thoughts, though I'm sure it must be great in Craig's hands.

      @adankohnhorst829 ปีที่แล้ว

      Also, in the US at least, people take ashes on the palm VERY SERIOUSLY! It's not a gag over here, probably because of our nation's past steeped in spiritualism and mediums, etc. Very interesting to hear that it's more of a gag in the UK. And finally, I think Matt would have figured out Lux too, with a little coaxing ;) some of the reviews on penguin seemed to indicate that people's minds went rather quickly to the light itself. I wonder how spectators unpack that one after the fact. Great show as always

    I don't understand how Matt even when he figures it out, he doesn't figures it out. Not to say that Craig of course keeps lying and lying to maybe that's why he doesn't "click". But Matt even had the palm facing him even before the reveal and Craig had to flip his hand again.

  • @VicDiniMagic
    @VicDiniMagic ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Lucky he didn't notice anything when he was flipping his hand over!

    Craig have you ever been caught by the Spectator? Without giving the method away....that's my biggest fear performing Double Cross.

    Ok, this may seem weird, but it bothers me that he just bald-face lies to Matt. "But I never grabbed your hands." He very clearly did at the beginning of the trick. It just seems like he's gaslighting him at that point, and that feels icky to me. It's one thing to let your audience make assumptions on their own, and it's another to try and hack and rewrite their memory.

    Really interesting watch

  • @tokageki
    @tokageki ปีที่แล้ว

    Right here at 4:31 the mark is already on his hand. And at 5:39 when he says "You can't palm ink", he quickly licks his finger.
    Edit: So i haven't watched past the reveal yet, wanted to see if i could figure it out on my own and i believe 4:26 is when he places the mark on his hand. The magician's finger goes straight to where the mark is and sits there for a bit, and the magician didn't let us see his fingers before doing that.

    You’re asking Matt to work it out and when he 1000% does you insist he’s wrong. Not cool

    • @mikeonthebox

      Craig can't give the secret away, but then he actually does when he confirms Matt nailed it. So he is giving it away.
