Mono all the way for Piper! It's not that I dislike stereo, I don't, I love it, but I just cannot stand that early way of stereo mixing using hard-panning left and right. The instrument were recorded in mono and when you pan a mono recording, it doesn't sound right because there is no corresponding sound image in the opposite channel. And it just doesn't sound like a band to me when you have the instruments panned to the left and vocals panned to the right. Now, if someone was to do a proper stereo remix of Piper, I would be interested. Gilmour did a great stereo remix of "Mathilda Mother" in 2010 and it sounds great. Drums and bass in the centre, vocals and guitars tastefully panned where needed. Until then, MONO!
hello everyone I have three versions of this marvel of 60's psychedelia The original stereo version, the remastered mono version and the remastered stereo version and after a very close listen I can say that the best are two...the original stereo version and the remastered mono version....voices are much clearer open and the sound in general is really clean and wide while in the remastered stereo version the sounds are very balanced but a little subdued compared to the other two versions..... I can say that the remastered mono version is truly remarkable.
I have the mono mix in the little box with the cards, and it's loud as fuck. I've got a sealed mono Piper from Record Store Day, and a mono Saucerfull.
Se usó una capsula stereo para rippear ambas ediciones? Tengo ambias ediciones y para las monofonicas con una capsula mono suena increíble. Me pasó con las ediciones mono de los beatles al usar una capsula stereo sonaban horrible. Todo cambió con la capsula mono
I just ordered a copy of the mono! Cost more than I wanted to pay, but this is one of my favorite albums, love the mono mix. Don’t like the weird late-sixties stereo separation on that one.
Hola Alvaro, en realidad no me convence ninguno pero creo que me decanto por el segundo, aunque la mezcla estéreo suena poco creíble con la batería arrinconada a un lado , la masterización es más suave y parece no sufrir de un abuso en la dinámica. La versión mono es más estridente y apretada, se vuelve confusa cuando los instrumentos cobran fuerza .
Hola, Roberto. Como siempre gracias por comentar. Ese detalle que mencionas de la batería es precisamente el que hace que esta mezcla estéreo me desagrade tanto. No recuerdo si hemos hablado contigo antes de esto, pero yo soy enemigo de los "paneos" extremos, a menos que estemos hablando de una grabación de demostración o de efectos de sonido como las "transmisiones espaciales" que suenan en este tema. Pero que el bajo no suene en el centro o que la batería no tenga un "paneo" realista es algo que me "baja de nota" automáticamente. Claro, no pierdo de vista el hecho de que en 1967 no había la tecnología para hacer una mezcla estéreo realmente buena. Y en el caso de este tema es una lástima porque, como decía, los efectos de sonido se prestan mucho para jugar de una manera similar a la que jugó Jimmy Page con "Whole Lotta Love" (cómo cambiaron las cosas solo dos años después). Pero escuchar la batería sonando exclusivamente por el canal izquierdo es suficiente para yo preferir la mezcla monofónica. Prácticamente todos los instrumentos están balanceados hacia los extremos, pero sería más "tolerante" si la batería no tuviese esa ubicación en la mezcla. Eso sí, estoy totalmente de acuerdo contigo en lo de la estridencia de la versión mono comparada con la estéreo. De nuevo gracias. ¡Saludos!
Let's bust a few myths shall we? You say "the original recording in mono..." 'The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn' was released in both mono and stereo on 4th August 1967. I have an ORIGINAL copy of the mono vinyl and the volume levels are all over the place! I have been listening to it recently. You're confusing the mix.
Mono is the way its supposed to sound and is much louder and better. Stereo sound only appears to be louder. To each their own i guess. I will say this i think stero sounds cooler because the effects pan ear to ear and its trippy but mono sounds better and how it sounded in the studio
So much power and energy in the mono mix. Love it. The stereo isn’t terrible, but flat next to mono.

Stereo sounds better to me. Especially at the end of Interstellar Overdrive with the guitar effects and panning, it’s so trippy

When it comes to early psychedelic rock records and early 60's rock and roll in general, mono is the way to go.

psychedelic music in mono with the reverb stripped away is not psychedelic
The vocals on astronomy domine are better and higher in the vinyl mix, I think.
Stereo sounds little bit slower.

The bass and drums in the mono mix is usually always better on vinyl
