@ 6:36 something I realized is something Jim hasn't taken into account is how he is trying to replicate the same pick attack with not just his fingers, but his ears
we all do this, just wear ear plugs and plug into a looper, you will find a drastic difference even with the same guitar tone in a different sequence
Tone is in the ears....just like picking up a light bowling ball you thought was heavy....
we are human and make adjustments, only a machine could do it

I understand what you are saying\, & it does make total sense. Can't really use a looper in this situation, because of comparing different guitars....or guitar like things lol Usually when doing a tonal comparison test like this, it would be with the same D.I. tracks, & then re amped to keep the performance aspect consistent, but with comparing Guitars, can't really do that. Have to just try & get it as close as possible.

The problems with these kinds of tests: 1. The sound is only one aspect in the experience of an instrument. Problem is, you feel the instruments resonance and liveliness and that serves inspiration. Meterials and construction techniques effect the feel of a guitar greatly. Id be willing to bet Jim didn't sell that beautiful Tom Anderson even though his 2x4 was "just as good" because it wasn't just as good. No matter what it sounded like.
    2. Looks! I have guitars that are inexpensive that i love, i also have a few with quilt and flame tops with beautiful finishes. Sometimes i can get lost just gazing into the depths of the wood. Why isn't that worth considering? Ive been inspired to play and write just by looking across the room at that beautiful guitar. That involves tonewood as well.
This video was seen by enormous numbers of people and yet, i still haven't seen anyone on stage playing a 2x4. The Robert Randolphs of the world didn't rush out to buy a work bench, a shelf and a couple of rusty old motors to take on the road. If you want to disprove the value of beautifully made instruments you've got a long way to go!

I fully understand what you mean about how you like the look of the instrument.
I feel the same way. I have always said "They are beautiful works of art, that you can make art with"
I have all 16 of mine hanging on the walls for 2 reasons. 1 just like you said, they are beautiful, & can inspire you by just looking at them. 2 they are just ready to grab & go.
I appreciate those same things in Guitars/Basses.
However, that was not the point of this video/test.
This was strictly about where "SOUND" comes from on an electric guitar.
So, although I agree with you on your points about the looks of an instrument, I don't see the relevance of your comment about looks when it comes to this video/test.
Yes, absolutely Jim is not going to use the 2X4 guitar to gig out on.
If you remember the 1st electric guitar Les Paul made was a 4X4, it was called the log, & he was laughed at by everyone for it, & not just because it was an electric, but because it was a 4X4. He had to cut off the sides of an acoustic guitar, & glue it to the 4X4 to make it look like more of a guitar. Jim did the 2X4 to make a point. As well as the air guitar. That is that most guitar players listen with their eyes, & not their ears. I feel it was an amazing eye opening video. Proof is proof.
Absolutely, the looks of a guitar mater to the player. No doubt at all, but again, this is not what the video/test was about. Thanks so much for watching/commenting. I do appreciate every comment, even if the viewer/commenter does not agree with my views/points. @@MUSICIANGeeK I understand all of that and i agree, however, these kinds of videos form the way we think these days. Especially with the younger, or should i say future guitar comunity. With all of these voices saying pickups dont matter, wood doesn't matter, construction techniques dont matter, aesthetics don't matter, what we will be left with in the future is plastic, mass produced electronic replacements for what guitars used to be. I fell in love with guitars, not because i was playing cheap guitars that i could get my hands on, but because i would day dream all day about the beautiful ones in the catalogs and magazines. The ones i couldn't afford. That passion drove me to make the cheap guitars, that i had, more like the untouchable ones. I learned so much about guitars through that time of my life that it formed a passion that is still alive within me 40 years latter. My daughter has a cheap plastic keyboard. She's likes itn and shes learning to play it, but shes not in her room at night pouring through catalogs and magazines dreaming about keyboards with flame maple housings, or fancy keys made of abalone. No signature models or any other fun that makes you feel like your a part of something. When shes older she wont be building and customizing her own keyboards. Thats what im afraid were about to loose. The artistry and passion for the instrument is what makes ours different from other instruments, its what makes guitars and basses special. If the future of guitars is all plastic and circuit boards, it will be at the hands of people like Jim Lill, and Glen Fricker, who view the guitar as merely a tool. The electric guitar is not just a tool, its a culture and a way of life! . . .or at least it used to be. If you've never felt that way then im sorry, you missed the best part of being a guitar player.

@@stevenpipes1555 I really don't think that this is the point of Jim or Glen at all. Even with Glen's opinions on pickups, he doesn't say that they don't matter, what he says is that in a Metal setting with a TON of gain, it makes a fraction of a percent of difference. There is a difference, but it is negligible. Now on a CLEAN guitar sound, yes. Pickup make all the difference in the world. Also the type of pickup "humbucker or single coil" There is an obvious difference. I agree 100% with those opinions based on my real world experience as well. I have guitars with EMG's & I have inexpensive guitars with stock passive pickups as well. When a TON of gain is added, can't tell the difference at all with the exception of the output. Now with clean sounds, I hear the differences in the pickups.
I really don't think that either of them devalues guitars, or good workmanship. Just showing the documented proof of scientific tests with audio/video documented. That tends to get people who like expensive guitars upset. Like it devalues their investment. Like they then have to justify it. I am not saying that my Harley Benton SG Copy is built as well as an actual Gibson SG, but I got my Harley Benton for $241 Canadian, a Gibson SG Standard is $2,399.00 Canadian. Is the actual Gibson SG made better, absolutely, but is it over $2158.00 better? In my opinion, not even close. Especially when you do a sound shootout & most people can't tell the difference, then you know you have a good guitar. My Harley Benton's look sound & play amazing. I love these things. They are super affordable & I love them. That's all that matters to me. Now if you can afford guitars like that, hey awesome. Go & do it if those guitars are what you like & make you happy. Nothing wrong with that at all. However, don't think that because Jim, Glen, & I have a difference of opinion on where the tone comes from, or approaches on instruments/tone that we don't respect & love guitars & have passion for them & music in general.

@@MUSICIANGeeK Im not suggesting that this is their goal, im observing that this is the effect their focus on the subject is having. Ive already seen so many people saying things like "Paul Reed Smith is a charlatan and a snake oil salesman" for example. Ive been lucky enough to hold a private stock in my hands and it was one of the most beautiful objects ive ever seen with my own eyes. Hes an artist not a charlatan. People like Glenn and Jim aren't just speaking to a metal audience they're speaking to the future of guitar enthusiasts all over the world! I have no problem with inexpensive guitars my whole collection is inexpensive modified hot rods. I get it. But some day i still hope to buy that dream guitar and i hope their still making things like that when the time comes. In this "everything is disposable" society guitars are one of the very few things left that people love enough to repair and hold onto. I have nothing against Glenn, im a fan of the channel, and i have nothing really against Jim either, i just wish they would also express the importance of passion for the instrument and the craft. When they throw around phrases like "dont waste your money on pickups" i get that he means it with regard to the finished recording, but most people who play will never actually record anything. 90 percent of the guitars sold will only ever be for "in the room" enjoyment. My good friends little brother is in a hardcore band. His inexpensive guitar sounded weak and under powered. Being a fan of Glenns channel, he went over 200 dollars into a new speaker for his amp. His guitar still sounded anemic. I dug out an old Dimarzio Super Distortion, from back in the 90's, and put it in the poor kids guitar for him. It was a difference of night and day. Now im not saying that his amp was bad with the new speaker, on the contrary, it sound incredible but it wasn't the problem. This kid will never record anything with this band most likely, but in the room with his band the pickup made a ton of difference. These guys don't fully understand the reach that their voices have. And i don't know ANYONE who only plays high gain. When you turn off the distortion your guitar still needs to sound good. I don't want them to stop i just want to hear some balance and tact.

@@stevenpipes1555 OK, I see what you are saying, but just like you said, Glen's channel is geared towards the recorded product, & for Metal.
You said it right there. As he always said. I feel this is the equivalent to judging a Chinese restaurant, based on the fact that they don't have Pizza. They are a Chinese restaurant. They make Chinese food, not Pizza. Glenn's channel is for recording Metal. You say that you don't know anybody that only plays distorted all the time, you haven't met many Metal Heads lol. The Metal heads I know NEVER want a clean tone. I LOVE clean tones myself, but that is me.
I understand all of your points, & agree with most of them, but still don't see the relevancy on them in the context of this video.
