  • We're examining the Elven Artifacts "Moonblades" which inherit abilities from the previous owners when they die. Thus becoming stronger the older they are.

    Don't Elves reincarnate until they are forgiven by Corellon and are permitted to join his side. Dose that mean attuning a Moonblade is equivalent to sacrificing their afterlife?

      This was exactly my question. Jorphdan, help! Lore confusion!

    • @Jorphdan
      @Jorphdan  3 ปีที่แล้ว +72

      Elf souls are reincarnated. So each new elf born on Faerun is a soul that has been to Arvandor and returned.
      There is a concept of Transcendence, where an elf is at the end of their life and Sehanine Moonbow has opened the door to allow the soul to return to Arvandor. Those that die of old age without experiencing Transcendence are believed to have been denied admission to Arvandor. Their soul just passes into the planes, never reincarnated.
      Perhaps the moonblade is a way to ensure your spirit is not lost forever to the cosmos, or to simply stop reincarnating.

    • @irispounsberry7917
      @irispounsberry7917 3 ปีที่แล้ว +28

      @@Jorphdan Given the ties of a Moonblade is to the family lineage, it is more akin to giving wholly of oneself to protect and empower the next generation of the family - there is that difficult process to attune to it as dedication to that ideal. In that case, the elf would not care what happened to them, so long as they can sacrifice his/her-self for their loved ones' security (it is a weapon afterall), or fulfill a deep sense of duty to the family that fostered everything about them.
      Since the blades are tied to prestigious and ancient lineages, there could also be the selfish desire to not reincarnate to a lesser lineage but be bound to greatness for eternity.

    • @robertnixdorf6168
      @robertnixdorf6168 3 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      @@Jorphdan So this might be a silly question but if every elf's soul is a reincarnation and some souls are "discarded" into the planes and thus never reborn, are the elves at one point going to "run out" of souls?

    • @liefone
      @liefone 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @@robertnixdorf6168 Could be though keep in mind Big C stockpiles some elf souls in Arvandor so he can send em were he expects trouble also if they ever get truly desperate they can always ask/take some blood from Big C since that is the source of elven souls.
      Than you got the dark elves and no one really knows were they get their elf souls since they been banished and don't get soul reincarnation, at least not in the same way.

    I had a Moonblade on my moon elf swashbuckler rogue. I found a dormant one in an elven city laid waste by a necromancer some centuries prior and was deemed worthy by it. Was definitely one of the coolest things that ever happened to a character of mine. Really made me feel special in that campaign because it fit the character's arc really well.

    You forgot the coolest Moonblade out there. The Moonflower Moonblade, once held at one time by Aralyn Moonblade and her companion, former Lord of Waterdeep, Danilo Thann. It had the ability of Elf Shadow and, once allowed two people to attune to it, then that property was changed to being tied to the Syl Tel Quissar of the Forest of Tethyr, summoning the wielder to them when they were in great need. Great adventure book. Read Elf Shadow and Elfsong by Elaine Cunningham to learn more.

    Another thing to do is to have the moonblade attune to a player but not unlock it's abilities beyond the +1 to hit and damage, and have a side quest to unlock it's other runes by traveling to various elven temples across the land. Depending on the temples they go to different powers can be unlocked, and some of the temples will have guardians who require a task to earn entry.

    Currently playing a High-Elf Bladesinger with a Moonblade (+3, Finesse, acts as Ring of Spell Storing). It's one of the best items for defining a character build and that entire character's backstory, and given that it doesn't "turn on" until you prove yourself worthy you can inherit it at level 1 without breaking the game. "My Father and my Father's Father could not wield it, but I will." It's cliché, but it works, and there can be some fun in not knowing how strong it will eventually be.

I'm thinking of letting it use their spellcasting modifier for attacks and damage, counting as a spellcasting focus, a ring of spell storing, and maybe have an innate druid spell or two is what it'll end up doing. OP? Yes. Easy to get and find? No. They have to go through a whole story-arc in order to find this thing.

    In a campaign I’m in, my Moon-Elf Bladesinger discovers the secrets of forging a moonblade. He’s going to construct it early on, and eventually it will reveal its full power (as he learns its “True Name”).
    In the hilt, he used his father’s moonstone arcane focus. The sentience is just residual magical knowledge from the focus. It’s going to start with the Radiant minor property, and a +1.
    At its max power, the blade will have: +3 to attack and damage rolls, +2d6 slashing, crits on 19/20, vorpal, weapon bond, Radiant/Beacon/the ability to flash brightly.
    My character’s mission is to forge this blade, and unlock its destined abilities, and then seek vengeance against a dark power that destroyed Evermeet.

    I love its design in 5e.
    The way I changed the blade for my own setting where shape-shifting sentient swords are commonplace (someone watched too much Bleach) is that a regular blade lives in its user's mind/soul as a separately operating but closely connected entity. When the user takes up a nameless sword, that spirit inside their mind slowly turns it into their weapon.
    Moonblades are the exact opposite. They slowly turn their user into an extension of themselves, where the freedom of the user is dependent on how nice the sword is.
    Worse yet, there are specialized dolls that, when stabbed through with a moonblade, will turn into the blade's ideal host. At least what the blade thinks is ideal for them.

    I can see adventurers going on a quest to find a Moonblade, discover it’s corrupted, and can decide to keep going or purify it. Hi :) I *never* comment on youtube videos, but I've been binging yours today, and I really appreciate them
    I'm commenting because I'm wondering if you would consider doing a common-knowledge summary video for beginning characters. Because all this lore is really cool, and it's great to have it summarized, but it's such a mind-boggling amount of info that no non-historian character can be expected to know at the start of their career (though I assume your work is mainly aimed at DMs)
    So would you consider condensing what you've learned so far into a common-knowledge video? Maybe tier-ing it by in-game education level?
    Thanks for the videos
    They're keeping me from doom-binging the news :)

    • @Jorphdan
      @Jorphdan  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That sounds like a cool idea, but common knowledge would be different for different regions of Faerun. Different races such as Dwarves, Elves, or Humans would all have varying levels of local knowledge.
      Because it is really up to the DM and the player running the game I think I should leave it to those two! If your DM drops something on you and says your characters knows about it, well I'm just a google search away if there was a video done on that topic! If not make it up, make the forgotten realms your realms :)

It was chaotic neutral (sometimes evil). +5 /+6 vs orcs and drow with lots of spell like abilities. My pc had a holy avenger sword. (Crusader). One time we were dominated and we fought each other. Both swords clashed together. Both swords were intelligent and tried to control each other. We almost beat the crap out of ourselves. Though we almost killed each other, it was an epic fight.

    The Moonblades were attunable only by ELVES, half elves were deemed unworthy by the blades' *soul* (Arylin Moonblade was the exception due to the circumstances) Sun elves demanded moonblades and most were struck dead as they were all deemed unworthy. if the moonblade senses you have a dark side and are the last of your line the blade "dies" as the high magic used to power the moonblades stops working and all you are left with is a masterwork elven sword. a few moonblades were corrupted by greedy Sun Elves and are *evil moonblades.

    Hmm. What are your thoughts on a Human with Elven lineage being attuned to a Moonblade, like one thought lost or forever dormant due to it being believed that the lineage died out, but Fate lets said Human encounter the Moonblade?
    I can already imagine some shenanigans like having to deal with some Elves who see that as blasphemy, or maybe whoever had the Moonblade before it woke up wants it back. Seems like random repeat encounters that could work for an adventuring party without becoming "Chosen One-y".

    Moonblades are created from a high magic ritual and they were not created by moon elves, but because during the claiming ceremony, it was the moon elves who were found worthy while the gold elves were found wanting and perished.
    "While over 300 blades were created for all the
    clans of elves, 180 moon elves survived the First Claiming Ceremony, and dozens of once-proud gold elf clans saw their heirs die, judged unworthy by the blades. Thus, this is why the swords are moonblades, for the moon elves that bore them." Cormanthyr: Empire of Elves, page 23.
    The Starym Moonblade was made for the gold elf Starym clan and corrupted by Moander in order to let it be drawn in the claiming ceremony. After the gold elf Starym clan left Myth Drannor, the moon elf Straym clan, which was an offshoot of the gold elf Straym clan, returned to Myth Drannor years later and reclaimed the families position.
    Two moonblades have their powers detailed, Arilyn's Moonblade and the Straym Moonblade. Four more moonblades are listed, but their powers are not detailed: Thoerl, moonblade of House Silverspear, Zaor's moonblade that decided who should be king (called the king's blade by some), the Craulnober moonblade, and Xan's moonblade which does have a few details about its abilities.

      Finally someone who actually knows the lore. So often I see these videos and they use D&D book lore and not the original from the books. The only thing I would add to this description is a high elf mage sacrificed himself during the original spell. His wisdom is what partially determines who is worth of the blades.

    • @craigtucker1290
      @craigtucker1290 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TorilAthtar Thank you.
      Though it wasn't a spell that created the moonblades, but a high magic ritual (lalyshae'Seldar'Wihylos/ Sacraments of Seldarine Blessing) that was of massive cooperation and involvement:
      "An aged elf, the Grand Mage Ethlando at Elven Court linked all the rituals, and High Magic
      flowed across Toril, binding all the elven High Mages in solemn ceremony. Each elven civilization at that time created at least 25 moonblades for their clans, both noble elder Houses to commoner clans alike. In Arcorar’s northern glades, 100 were created for the combined nobles and clans of that great forest's three realms."
      I couldn't find a source that indicates Ethlando perished during the high magic ritual that created the moonblades, perhaps you were thinking of the Mythanthor who created the mythal for Myth Drannor and merged with it? Or was this stated perhaps in one of the novels? Information on Ethlando is really scarce. I did find this regarding how moonblades measure one's worth:
      "Known to all of the wielders of the moonblades, these magical blades were testing the moral fortitude of their wielders to
      help the Elven Court and the elves of all the realms determine the most worthy ruler among all the elder elven clans. The moonblades provided power to the worthy in their successes and death to those inharmonious to the betterment of the Tel'Quessir."
      Though, death has been nerfed by WotC in the latest edition and they added some sort of ceremony to the claiming that is not part of the lore, but such has been the tenure of WotC rewriting lore and canon.
      "The Grand Mage also set a magic in play within the moonblades that they would all pulse with magic to signal when
      the time came to find the King Blade among them: When the
      blades number a score and four, they shall ring out the time
      for the Ascension Ceremony. The one clan and one clan heir chosen worthiest by the moonblades shall unify the elves in their truest homeland, where the heir shall rule over all."
      Only the Straym moonblade works differently as it was corrupted with aid of Moander in order to let the first gold elf Starym draw the blade without being judged unworthy. It is also the only moonblade that steal a portion of the owner's essence to power the blade, normal moonblades do not.
      2nd edition tends to be the best source for specific settings that existed in that edition as there was so much material that was printed compared to the rather anemic production of specific campaign setting material in the last two editions.

      @@craigtucker1290 A friend of mine loves the The Starym name and is a pretty big elf player. Often times he gets his info from very old source books 2nd edition stuff and such. Mine is purely from the novel. So we often have slightly different knowledge.
      According to him the Rulers blade which I have heard it called more often than the Kings blade is held by the Srinshee. In one of the books he heard she went to claim it to stop the fighting between the gold elves over who should wield it. When the blade accepted her they all casted powerful killing spells at her. She had tears in her eyes as the spells were reflected back at the casters.
      From what i have read myself she seems to be the most powerful elf in existence. I think it is one of ed greenwood books "not a pure eleminster book" She helped fend off some shadow fell wizards from the netheril era from stealing something like the weave or part of it. I can't remember exactly but it was one of those kinda fights were everyone if just trying not to die while the wizards of titanic magic slug it out.

      @@TorilAthtar Your friend is mistaken for the Ruler's blade is not a moonblade, it is an elfblade of which there are only three for the kingdom of Cormanthyr. The other two are the Artblade and the Warblade. The ruler's Blade is quite powerful in the fact that it has three selu'kiira as part of its construction that allows the wielder to perform high magic rituals without being a high mage or even a wizard.
      The King's Blade was decided among the surviving moonblades. The King's Blade is Zaor Moonflower's moonblade that existed at the same time as the Ruler's Blade was held by Colonel Eltargrim, though at that time it was just a moonblade because the choosing of the most worthy to lead the elves had not yet been triggered by the moonblades. When Eltargrim passed, the Ruler's Blade was left to what most believed to be his daughter's future rule, but she was assassinated in a manner that defied any resurrection efforts. That left the the rulership of Cormathyr and Myth Drannor contested and this is what happened with those trying to claim the Ruler's Blade:
      "Over the next four days and nights, each of the noble Houses
      sent at least one heir to the Tower to touch the blade and gain its power. No feet touched the stairs of the Rule Tower’s interior, and it was not the barring by the armathors that kept the stairs clear. All the elves flew to the Tower in full regalia and honors, and one by one the result was the same. The elves, no matter how penitent or honorable they seemed to themselves, reached for the elfblade and were found wanting. The gold arc of light that crackled along the blade flared into fiery life, crawled down the blade to engulf each elf, and consumed the body utterly in arcane fire, ending the elf’s life in a bolt of eldritch flame that blasted skyward to explode high above the Tower, signaling yet another failure. By the dawn of the sixth day, a noble from each of the 24 different gold elf Houses had been consumed by the Claiming Ceremony, and their Houses wept. Even in grief and in this time of trial, conspiracies abounded."
      It got worse before it got better with the rule towers destruction:
      "To this day, none know who
      unleashed the killing magic within the Rule Tower, only that the Tower exploded in arcane fury at dusk and none walked away. Under the thrall of their own hubris, the children of Cormanthyr, rather than risk the fate of rule by a non-elf, sundered the first and purest symbol of their fair city. Though few were surprised, the explosion affected none of the High Mages or the elfblade within the Ceremony Sphere, which still floated serenely and silently above the chaos. Despite the discord below, six more elves had tried and failed to become Coronal that day, though these elves were bold commoners, servants who sought to reclaim sense and peace while their masters warred. In all, 40 elves had tried, and the People had failed on two fronts that day."
      The Srrinshee has a complicated history of being both elf and human, baelnorn, wizard and high mage:
      "In her time, she has been so many things: the Lady Oluevaera
      Estelda, Cor’Selu’taar (Grand Mage of the High Mages of Cormanthyr), leader of Srinshinnar (and thus her commonly known title), savior of Yrlaphon’s Survivors, the Wardnorn of the Vault of Ages, tutor of the Armathora, and (her current status) High Court Mage of Myth Drannor."
      "During much of the Coronal Eltargrim’s rule, she was a
      baelnorn, guardian of the Coronal’s most precious treasures, and teacher to many of the Court’s mages. However, shortly
      before the Opening, she was inexplicably restored to life and
      youth (though rumors persist that the Lady of Mysteries, the human goddess Mystra, had a hand in this); within a few
      mere decades, she stood among the other mythal-casters as a
      fresh-faced (but still agedly wise) elven maid of only 200 winters! She now walks Myth Drannor as an adult, her lustrous sapphire-blue hair nearly two feet longer than her own height and her ivory-skinned beauty in a fullness unseen in more than a millennia."
      She can also handle the Ruler's blade without harm, is a 30th level mage and high mage with an intelligence of 25 and a wisdom of 24.

    Unsure if I'll be able to get this into a campaign, having one on hold where I have two half-elves where I want to reward one with a moonblade
    problem is, they're both chaotic good
    so what could I do? Shatter the moonblade! Then I can have a whole sub-plot of Restoring this moonblade, the souls inside chaotic and shattered, their wills now needing to be guided by one as erratic and flowing as they've become.
    and I can also possibly have a whole other thing going where the shards of the moonblade can be reforged into other blades with the same chaotic force.
    but my favourite thing would be to have one of the players find a hilt; the hilt of a moonblade. One of them manages to attune to this magical item; it is a disparate sentience and learning its name will let them wield it as the Blade itself springs forth anew from the hilt! The moonblade now acts as a Sun Blade with Force instead of Radiance!

    So....on of the other players in a campaign im in gave me a moonblade. Mind you at the time I just thought it was a +1 longsword with an extra 2d6 radiant damage bonus. An upgrade to my +1 longswird that broke in that session. Also mind you that player character is a special one. Basically he's a kind of demi God that traveled through multiple timeliness and realities (the dm allowed it) and in one timeline he killed a whole town of elves just to steal a moon blade in which he thought was garbage so he placed all the souls of the elves in the village into the moonblade and put it in his pocket dimension in which it sat for over 100 years until one day in this campaign he gave it to me....I'm a variant human. Though I never actually used it yet in my character sheet the dm said it has a 2d6 and also when I put it close to my ear u can hear the screaming of elves. So idk if I'm already attuned or if it's still sentient but now I'm determined to fix this cursed magical blade.

Perhaps by bathing the blade in holy pools dedicated to the Selderine from the prime material, to the fey wild, and finally in Arvandor itself. Perhaps the Gods will only permit the blade to enter the pool upon completion of holy quests that further to unite the elves and seal alliances with humans, dwarves, halflings, and gnomes. @@heavenburnt9055 Yeah, it could make for an interesting campaign. You'd definitely need to be playing an evil character to go that route and you would likely need to be in an evil campaign as I don't picture good aligned teammates being ok with it.
      I only make mention of it because there is more to a Moonblade than simply having your Artifcer duplicate its magical effects. Any weapon can have those stats. The Sunblade you get in Curse of Strahd is nothing more than a sun sword. What makes it the Sunblade is the history and the fact that the blade used to be his brother's sword and it used to have a crystal blade that was destroyed. Same applies here. It's a Moonblade due to the history and the fact that it is powered by Elven souls.
      So if you wanted a Moonblade you would need to do more than duplicate its effects. You'd either need to convince the GM to give you one or go on a mad quest with your Necromancer bff to steal elven souls and lock them into the sword. Not claiming one path is better than the other. Both can be fun. Just that you're gonna need to do more than copy its stats to make it a Moonblade. I've had PCs in the past that would 100% be down for sticking elf souls into a sword. And you could always have an epic showdown between you and an elf with his Moonblade that he inherited through the ages. See who has the better Moonblade.
