- Throughout the year here in Michigan we are faced with several severe storms. When they hit in the winter, they can be particularly dangerous. Today I am getting a few things prepared to get us ready for snow, wind, and power outages.

The issue with the solar powering your boiler is the lithium batteries don't like being charged below 20 degrees.
Especially the lithium iron phosphate batteries. Most have a low temperature cutoff for charging in the BMS
100% correct, and not just CHARGING. If it gets too cold . . . both lithium Ion AND Lithium Iron Phosphate will not discharge either. That would be the fly in this ointment.

It only got down to -9° here without the windchill and maybe an inch of snow. I'm actually surprised that the power hasn't gone out with as hard as the wind has been blowing. Rural QuadCities Illinois.
Question - why not back the tractor into the garage? That way you can just open the door, drop the blade plow out from there. We need to get a hookup like yours for a generator. Thanks and stay safe. God bless and protect.
I normally just drop the blade and back out. It moves snow that way too:)
In Missouri, I finished wrapping my chicken run in plastic and it worked perfectly for them. I also installed a heated water drum with circulation pump and they had fresh water the entire time.

Be careful charging solar generators in temperatures below 32f. A lot of them do not have low temp charging cut off and will damage the cells inside charging below 32f.
I disagree with salt on gravel driveway it will turn to mush when it thaws use sand and cinders.

It’ll be nothing compared to the week of -40 to -50 windchills I just got through in Alberta… we got a bad batch of diesel so all our diesel equipment has been down the past 4 days because the fuel gelled up, two out of our 3 vehicles wont start, and the snow drifted so much that we have been snowed in almost all week 😂 we’d plow the drive before the skid steer quit and within the hour it was back to where it was or worse!

it would charge much faster if you put the battery on a board or log get it off of the ground it discharges batteries

How are your chickens doing? I'm in Toledo and it's hawking out there! I have a 400 watt radiant heater inside and it's hardly noticeable tonight. Good thing I checked one last time one made it's way into the nesting box and her comb was hard as a rock. I moved her on top of their water milk crate directly under their heater and took the water inside (was frozen solid anyways). She is responsive so hope she makes it.

I am currently sitting in my home office south of Toledo, it is -4 outside with a windchill in excess of -30 outside... wind is just ridiculous... I can't tell if it is still snowing or not - the wind is blowing snow everywhere. Not nearly as prepared as you, but we were prepared, um, somewhat lol. We are just far enough south we don't see the lake effect snows, thank goodness! Batten down the hatches and we'll see you on the other side of Christmas! My best to you and your family! 🤠

Good video as always! I noticed the hose bib next to your generator still had hoses attached. If that is a frost free hose bib, hoses need to be detached in order for it to not freeze up. Been there. Done that! 🤣 Merry Christmas to you and your family!
