      ***** I found them at a Japanese flea market. I just wanted to have a Laserdisc for some reason, and these were like 50 cents each. I didn't have anything to play them though so I thought they might be better in Mark's hands.

    Any man that loves shmups, Japanese Sega Saturn, and HK John Woo movies is a man whose opinion I can trust when it comes to quality entertainment.

      *****
      yeah but you mean: any man that loves John Woo's Hong Kong movies, right ?
      Most of his US movies were somewhat watchable, but none of them was in the same league as The Killer, A better tomorrow I & II or Hardboiled. The Asian 4h version of Red Cliff wasn't bad either.

    • @Broyale26
      @Broyale26 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Frank Schneider
      You are absolutely right. The only two Hollywood Woo flicks I like are Hard Target and Face/Off. MI:2 had its moments, but I strongly prefer his HK output. You ever heard of Johnnie To?

    • @frankschneider6156
      @frankschneider6156 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      *****
      I would have picked exactly the same US productions as you. MI:2 could have been good if he would have edited out the love story, problem is, that then there's just 30min of movie left.
      Yeah I know Johnnie To (well not personally of course), The Mission was awesome. Last one I've seen by him was Vengeance. Not great, but ok. Something that surprised me positively was SPL: Kill Zone with Donnie Yen. What i can also recommendate is Dobbermann by Jan Kounen. From France, not Hong Kong, but nearly the same class as John Woo's classics. Really worth a try.

      Nutz4Gunz45 As someone who owns one of those gargantuan beasts, I second this notion. There's Mega Drive, there's LaserDisc, then there's MEGALD; the holy union of Sega and LaserDisc. That is right up Mark's alley.

    Pro tip: If you will be playing your Laserdisc on a projector or modern TV, then use composite. Laserdisc was developed with composite in mind, and since your TV or projector will have a better 3D Comb filter, it will look much better.
    But, if you will be using it on a CRT TV, then use S-Video if possible. As the the 3D Comb filter in your player will most likely be better than the one on the CRT.

    • @pHD77
      @pHD77 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Actually, it's a bit the other way around.
      Due to modern displays being built for digital equipment, the processing of analog signals - especially composite - do not get a whole lotta love.
      Until I bought my Panasonic plasma, my laserdiscs looked horrible on old my 32" JVC LCD. There were a lot of rainbow artifacts, whenever very thin lines or patterns had to be displayed.
      If you want the best picture from your player, get either a top model CRT TV with a built-in high quality comb filter... or get an external comb filter unit to do the job.
      A more inexpensive way to get a 3D comb filter is by getting an older DVR and filter the signal through that. Many older DVRs from the early 2000s have great comb filters - especially the ones from Panasonic. Some of them even have upscaling capabilities and HDMI out.

      ***** I'm going to say it's the best of the analog video formats, and some players (1987+) can also play CD Video, which makes it two in one, and considering some newer players can also play DVD, it _can_ be a three in one video player! But, a majority of DVD players can also play CD Videos, meh. But if you're an old-school analog guy, LaserDisc is most likely your best option.

      The Duderino Man I love me some laserdiscs, mainly because i used to watch them when i was a kid in school (you could watch movies on them for 2 hrs after school was over). Also, when someone born after 1990 sees them their like, 'dude is that a huge dvd or something', kids crack me up.

    Laserdisc picture/audio quality varies from player to player. A good player will be comparable to an interlaced dvd in pq while a lesser quality player will have more noise etc. I know because I started off with an entry level Pioneer player and upgraded to a Pioneer Cld 95.

    Definitely look around for a player locally. Many of the mid-range to high-end models are pricey on ebay (around $250 plus). Shipping for one of these beasts will cost you quite a chunk of change, as well. Yard sales and flea markets are your best bet for scoring a player without emptying your wallet. I picked up an old Sony 550 for around $18. It's an auto-flip model with decent picture quality. To me LDs are a lot more collectible than VHS and Betamax. Standard, no frills discs run about $2 to $5 a piece. Buying LDs in lots is an even better alternative. You can score 30 or more discs for less than $100 most of the time.

    I ended up finding a Panasonic Laserdisc player a couple of years ago, similar to this one, for sixty dollars Australian. Found it at a charity shop by chance. This was especially rare since it is quite difficult to find an NTSC model in Australia, let alone Port Macquarie.

    Recently I've been into retro entertainment systems after noticing my CD player, VCR, and walkman were all broken. I actually had fun researching them and their various features and how they work. I got a really nice Sony VCR which is so much better than the Zenith I had and it's cool to own something like that that was probably very expensive in it's time and get it cheap. I also got a Sony Discman which is probably the nicest CD player I've ever owned but as far as walkmans I haven't been as lucky. I bought 3, 2 exact same AIWAs both work but have different issues and I got a newer Sony that still had Dolby NR which works but being the newer, cheaper 90s ones it wows and flutters if you move it. For whatever reasons decent walkmans still retain their value yet many no longer work due to aging components or broken belts but there's quite a wealth of info on them that no one in today's age probably has a clue about. Which is why I have an appreciation for this older technology because everything was its own device and they all had personality. Now everything is in chips on a phone which really can't be worked on and being software really doesn't have factors or variables which can change the experience per device.

      Panasonic Laserdisc players seem to last probably because they were made near the end of the laserdisc player cycle. There's much less of them online now and more Pioneer even tho I've heard that Panasonic's name is just slapped onto a quality Pioneer laserdisc player. On ebay it looks like there's a ton of dead Pioneer branded ones. Probably because more of them were made and some of the earlier laserdisc versions may have more issues while the mid 90s ones work better like the Panasonic one. So even if Panasonic laserdisc has Pioneer parts built into it it's quality parts since they're usually the ones working. My old Panasonic Laserdisc I had in the past had a big dent on the type of the case yet had no problems playing the discs still. That shows you how durable the design went into the Panasonic Laserdisc players. Not that I'm recommending anyone to dent the aluminum up or metal.

      XXTROB When it comes to anime, my view is that it's either English subs or nothing. English dubbing is so hit or miss, and when you've got a large cast of characters, some are good, most are mediocre, and the rest are cringe-worthy.

      I have heard that the audio for Akira was recorded before the animation, so watching it in Japanese is best because they match the lip sync, same thing with redline.

    Never had experience with Pioneer but I do know the Panasonic ones tend to last since there usually the ones on ebay listed as working while a lot of the Pinoeer brands are listed as not working. The funny thing with that is I thought I heard they both use the same Parts. I think I heard Panasonic's name is just slapped onto a Pioneer Laserdisc player. Laserdisc players are starting to get expensive now. I see them between 95 to 100 bucks on ebay now and on craigslist I seen ones between 75-50 bucks. Tho some of the ones on craigslists are junk and don't have the both sides or auto reverse feature since that came out with the later laserdisc models like you mention in your video. The mid 90s and maybe some earlier 90s read both side of the discs. Some people might think that's not a big of a deal but it's pretty nice not having to manually flip the disc.

    I have this very same LD player. It's pretty bare-bones compared to most Pioneer players, but it kicks the crap out of them in terms of reliability. I've gone through at least 5 Pioneers (or Pioneer clones, like Proscan) that have all crapped out or needed lots of repairs. Meanwhile, this one keeps playing great, 20+ years after it was built.

    • @shmehfleh3115
      @shmehfleh3115 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      BTW, don't bother with s-video on this or any other LD player, unless you're plugging it into a TV that's at least as old. Laserdiscs store video in a composite format; color and luminance are multiplexed together into a single video signal. The comb filter LD players use to separate out the color signal out from the composite video is almost always inferior to the one found in any modern TV. You'll actually get a much better picture by using the composite video jack on the LD player and letting the TV do all the video processing.

    I go for laserdiscs for the audio, the same reason I listen to vinyl. It's uncompressed, beautiful, warm, analog sound except it's even better on laserdisc cause that plastic coating keeps it undamaged forever and it's read by a laser for higher accuracy that doesn't wear out. VHS and Beta wear out quick and get fuzzy but it's still a pleasant analog wear for the most part. It's nostalgic. DVD grates my ears, I hate it. It didn't a problem until I got myself good speakers and a record player. You can never go back. Blu-Ray is great, I have no problem with it cause the it's just about as good as the laserdiscs digital which is another quick thing I gotta mention. The laserdisc has separate analog and digital tracks. Both can play through the RCA cables and sound equally as good but on my current setup with my new receiver the RCA now produces a hum I didn't get with my 80s receiver. I got a great optical cable for it instead and it made a world of a difference but you can't play the analog track which holds the commentary. That's another cool feature, immediate switching between commentary and regular tracks so you can enjoy a bit of both when you get tired of one or the other.
    Besides that I personally love the picture quality. It looks abysmal on any digital display but it is the only way to watch a movie on any analog device like a big ol' CRT. My s-video port is broken which is unfortunate but composite looks find. S-Video results differ with any tv and player combo so if you want pristine visuals look all that up first. Comb filters man. But I love the picture in my setup, it's the warm fuzziness of a tape, the analog perfection of true black and white, and it's stable and always clean so it never hurts to watch. VHS is fuzzier and has all sorts of issues. DVDs are bad with dark tones and black. There is so little resolution that the compression sticks out horribly when solid colors dominate a portion of the screen. Blu-Ray rarely has that problem or any in general. Blu-Ray is the best way to go if you have a modern setup. I play mine on a big projector and when I pull that screen up the CRT is right behind it.
    It took years for me to get it all right along with my old and new consoles and music players but there you go. That's my audiophile and videophile opinion. Hope that maybe helped in some way if you were looking into purchasing laserdiscs.
    Maybe I should mention what my components are too. Pioneer CLD-3070 laserdisc player from the late 80s cause I love the styling, it matched my dad's old receiver I had been using at the time, and I believe it was the advanced model at the time. It has all the outputs and buttons and dials you could ever want and a huge remote to match it. A later player may have a better laser for the picture but mine works great already. I recently got a similarly styled Pioneer 1-bit CD player because I love the intricate detail you can hear that normally would not be possible and the warm sound of 1-bit players. Other players I find are too rough on the ears. In my room I have a whole different setup of Technics gear cause the early 80s record player and receiver used to be my mom's. I've got a 90s dual deck cassette player, nothing too fancy but really convenient, and a 90s 5 CD MASH player which was their 1-bit designation. 5 CD changers are great for multi disc albums so you don't have theirs no break. I play CDs for convenience and records when I'm fine with getting up off my butt and changing the discs.
    BTW I'm 19. A lot of people like to joke around (or maybe are serious) and say that they were born in the wrong age but if I were born in the 70s and 80s where everything I love was happening it would be too expensive and I wouldn't have any of the amazing gear I have, especially all of my film SLRs which are a story for another day. This is the perfect time to be born in because the internet has made it possible more me to enjoy everything great that every decade has ever had to offer! It's always high quality metal products that don't break and are super cheap just because they're old which never necessarily means they're bad. Now is the greatest time to be an enthusiast of laserdiscs or any sort of old technology or whatever. Get on that shit now before it becomes all harder to find and too expensive all over again. Every time I finally decide to but a Sega Saturn the price goes up and I don't have enough money again and I regret not leaping on the opportunity when I had the chance. Longest comment I've ever written so I'm signing out here. Peace.

      Gordon Freeman Alright well at the ripe young age of 19 I don't think my ears will be too impaired any time soon. Anyways just look to the professional musicians and how they exercise their hearing over the years. Many adults lose their ability to hear ultra high pitch sounds that kids can hear, you know the ones we all used to download and play in class to bug the teacher who couldn't hear it? My band teacher could hear it. The professional Jazz musicians I have met in Philly (the Philly jazz scene is crazy good, we really know how to swing) can hear it amongst other things I could never pick up on. Musical aficionados learn to tell exact pitches and can tune their own instruments by ear. They learn the intricate differences of the build quality of instrument strings that create its's unique sounds. Bottom line, the human ear has a crazy amount of unlocked potential that can be uncovered over the years with a little work and paying close attention to the little things.
      Listening to my favorite songs on vinyl over the years I pick up more and more intricacies planted in the music than I've ever thought could be loaded in. The 70s went crazy with 8, then 16, then 24 track recordings and then some. With noise limits basically gone now experimental or just great bands and recording artists can layer in whatever they want and with the right equipment in your home you can sit down, pay attention, and hear every bit they have to offer you. I can say without a doubt music is best listened to in the living room with a good pair of stereo floor speakers where you can absorb it all in and learn. On the go is fine too but you only get the basic idea of what's really going on. You should just try it out sometime.
      Nowadays you can get the whole deal used real cheap from eBay, your local thrift shops, or your neighbors, parents, or grandparents who may still have their stuff lying around. I got all my gear for free cause both my parents had their old players, receivers, and speakers around. Replacing the needle on my player is only $10 every year or two. My MASH (1-bit [debatably the best])5 CD player was only $20 at Care and Share, a huge bargain. One of my friends spent $70 on an amazing late production linear tracking turntable and only $30 bucks for a receiver and CD player. Actually he has two set ups, the other one in his bedroom is all crazy professional equipment he got from a good guy at his church for free. Listening to high quality music nowadays is ridiculously cheap and accessible. Don't knock it till you try it.

      Fun fact of the day, the noise floor of a 16bit track is way too quiet to hear at all.

    Many people are of the opinion that laserdisc, with it's uncompressed audio, is capable of better audio than dvds. I am hard of hearing and I have always found dialog to be more understandable through a LD than a dvd so there may be some truth to this.
    Holy crap Mark has a real turntable. A Rega P3 2000. I had one for years but I upgraded to a Rega P7. So many youtubers have those awful cheap plastic turntables so it is refreshing to see someone with a bonafide audiophile grade rig. BTW Rega now offers a motor upgrade for the P3 which is compatible with their speed box which I absolutely recommend.

    I need to get back into Laserdisc. I have a Pioneer from the early 90s, but it only has composite, sad for me. I do have several classic movies that are great on Laserdisc...like Fantasia...the uncompressed digital audio on the LD format is perfect for Fantasia. I also went out of my way to make sure I had a Complete Aliens set, the entire movie on CAV discs...8 platters. I bought 5 lots before I could piece together a set that wasn't rotted. The CAV set was the only way to get the directors cut of Aliens for a good while, and I dumped the movie onto my compy at the time, and made copies for my friends.

      ***** Composite acually outputs the best picture quality, since the video is encoded that way.

    • @thatguyontheright1
      @thatguyontheright1 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well S-video makes it look better, only if the player has a better comb filter which splits the Composite signal into Luma and Chroma

    • @superhavi
      @superhavi 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** The comb filter has nothing to do with the S-Video-Output. It is also applied on the cinch-plug. S-Video only makes sense if you want to use cables that are longer than 2 meters. If the cable is shorter than that, a good composite cable will give you a better picture.

    • @thatguyontheright1
      @thatguyontheright1 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +superhavi You are wrong. The Video encoded on a LD is in Composite video, and must be combed out to get S-Video.

    I have that Definitive Edition Star Wars box and a few Criterion Collection and Ray Harryhausen Laserdiscs. My player doesn't put out a super great image, though. A lot of red and blue noise on the screen all the time. CLV discs are particularly bad for that. I wasn't sure if that was a Laserdisc thing or just my machine.

    Laserdiscs are analog. The video is analog, the sound is sometimes digital, more often then not, analog.
    So make up your mind!

    I think if they made them today they would look better cause they would be using a 4k sorce to make the laser disc from which is probably about 480p, you would get less noise or artifacts cause it would be a pristine digitally remastered 4k source used to make it. If I ever made a movie I would make it on laser disc and vhs and everything for fun.
