Glass is the best to use underneath .......watch sailrite they use hot knives with tempered glass under
Alan, I was just wondering if you've thought or tried something like masonite/hardy board as a surface to use this on. I think your mod of the weller iron is a fantastic idea and I'm looking to make one myself.

Did you experiment with different wire gauges? I am using mine as a foam cutter. A 3 inch circle will need almost a foot long wire. Not sure if my gun can handle that much so will try a 14 gauge. Nice video.
I didn't try any other wire sizes. But now that you mention foam cutting I'm wondering if I can use a guitar string to make a foam cutter as well!

What kind of wire did you use to make your fabric cutting tip?
John - it is a piece of solid 12 AWG salvaged from a scrap of 12/3 wire.

I don't think it will work on cotton material. It works by melting the nylon and polyester materials.
*Use "glass" instead of cardboard. It will protect any tabletop material and the knife edge slides easily over the glass surface.*

I have never had a project that needed silk. Not sure how it might work. If you try it, let me know how it works!

If you mean real natural silk, it won't work. It works only on synthetic material.

These type of soldering irons should only be used on a 20% duty cycle. i.e. Only switched on for 20 seconds in every minute (12 sec on, 48 sec off), or it'll burn out.
Can I use this to cut synthetic satin?
It will work on most synthetic fabrics. If your material melts when exposed to a flame, this cutter should work great for you.
Can we cut multiple layers of cloth/fabric
The layers will fuse together with most fabrics that this cutter works with.
more details you need, underground need to be glass, this dont absurb the heat. potentiometer for set temperature.

I would expect it to work well for Nylon and Polyester (synthetic) based fabrics. I have never tried it on cotton. It works by melting its way through the material. So if your fabric melts with a lighter, it is worth a try.
Not all. Synthetic and Cotton fabrics will leave a burnt mark on the fabric or catch fire.

Jeffy Glenn Tamayo I bought a soldering gun on eBay, craftsman 100 W/160 W. Just take out the soldering tip and insert 12 gauge wire. Using it for a foam cutter soon.
Guessing this wont work with hessian?

I don’t understand the point of this video. I clicked on it thinking it would show me how to make a DIY hot knife. Why would you show the finished product without showing how you got there?
Kayla, all the information you need is in the video. It's a Weller soldering gun. You can get one for as little as $40 at Home Depot. These are made in Germany so good quality. Cheaper versions on Amazon if that's what you want. The wire is solid (that's important) 12 gauge. 12AWG solid wire is also available at Home Depot and Lowes but it is for a big roll. This size is a common ground wire size and you could probably get a 6 inch piece from an electrician or at a heating and air conditioning shop. Might even have a piece at the big box store. Ask around with friends, someone will know someone who can help. Bend the wire into the shape you see in the video or what you choose. Take a hammer and pound out the part that will be the cutting edge. Hammer both sides equally and make sure that it pretty thin but not too thin or it can break. Look at the video for the size. Don't hit too hard. Work at it slow. Put the two ends in the soldering gun, tighten the screws and you're ready to go.
