Congratulations for re-animating this amazing box. I have listened this one six years during my university education. Highest electronic and mechanical design of those times. I wish a similar model would be still in production by SHARP.

hi, I have a sharp gf9696 and to make the radio work I have to press play on the tape mechanism with the selector set to radio, any ideas why this might be!? its like there is no power to the radio unless I press play on the cassette.

I am not familiar with the 9696. Make sure you have it set to radio and the power switch is in the "on" position. Could be a problem with the function switches; you might need to spray them with contact cleaner.

Well, that is a good deal if it has been completely restored. Hold on to it.

Dear Old School, thank you for your video. I've managed to get the same GF9191, but quite shabby and dirty. Would you, please, advise me is that difficult to detach the back panel and two side panels for separate washing and cleaning?

Hello: this is not difficult. You just have to separate the 2 parts slowly. I think there was an antenna wire attached from the back part to the front part.

@@OldSchoolElectronics Thank you. I will try.

It's been a long time since I worked on this unit and I no longer have it. I think mine had a screw in the battery compartment. Also, make sure there is no cassette in the unit. I remember the other screws being long and all the same size
. Just take your time when you have all the screws out and you separate the cabinet parts. Also make sure the speakers don't fall out if when you separate the 2 parts. I don't exactly remember if there were other wires besides the antenna wire. If there are, note where they go or take a picture if possible. I think you can do it! Good luck!

@@OldSchoolElectronics All you say now is quite simple and clear from the video. I already detached the front panel, speakers and upper panel and cleaned these panels. And I realized that back panel, side panels and bottom panel ARE THE ONE UNIT (it's all black). And I don't understand so far if it is possible to detach it from all the interior. Also I detached the cassette block and found two broken rubber belts in it, so now I would have to manage to get the new ones of the right size. So it would be quite a riddle to revive this gear!

Right, there are only 2 pieces: front and rear cabinet. You can basically take everything apart if you really wanted to. Don't forget to take a look at the little rubber pulley on the capstan.

I no longer have that, but I think it had a DIN connector, too.
