Not a fan of Mumford. It's just not my cup of tea. Really love Winston. He seems super-sincere in a world of largely click-baity partisan TH-camrs. I had a different experience at a pro-Uyghur demonstration. It was held outside the Chinese embassy in London about two or three years ago. It seemed ALMOST EVERYONE there was Muslim. I've still got the free T-shirt. I think it's a topic most people are simply unaware of. There's been no Uyghur equivalent of the Dalai Lama to increase public knowledge, and many sections of the West aren't all that sympathetic to Muslims.
Yeah , like Winston his view is always one of compassionate interest. He also seems like a decent individual. And for sure the University Leaders in the USA was unbelievable, you watch that clip and it simply is staggering that they all cannot bring themselves to say genocide of Jews is bad.... not real. And one of them in particular, Elizabeth Magill, kept on smiling while playing pathetic word games trying to not look like she really wanted to be in the 1940s German gang.... And then to find an African American Female, called Gay, also doing the same bullshit was like it was a SouthPark sketch....

You are right, Andrew. People need to be less sensitive. As a 60 year old Irish man, I've been called a paddy all my life. I worked in the middle East for years, and the British, the Scots, Welsh, yanks, Australians, even the Indians and Filipinos called me a paddy. People need to get over themselves

In fact one can definitely form a strong arguement that BLM has caused damage to many communities across America. The Police will no longer patrol some areas of Minneapolis. During the BLM ‘thing’ I watch associated websites - generally militant, black hyper left wing. The readiness to call for violence and vile slurs against Jewish people was breath taking in its vitriol and volume. Nothing appeared to be done by YT moderators. I found it staggering. I still don’t know why I had a channel blocked on YT (still!) - I challenged Gender/Trans militants on the issue of women’s safety and was jumped on. Incredible and inequitable double standards
I find it strange there's so much hatred towards Zionist jews for no reason at all.. Its not like they're behind lots of problems that white men get the blame for due to these white men not walking around with a their kippah on. The bible warns to be aware of the fake ones.
Linked to your point about proclamations of violence and double standards - I've seen a clip from a video of TH-cam Channels of a young black women calling for the death of the Royal Family, and being quite specific about how they should die, why they 'deserve' to die. But, at that time at least, no sanctions had been placed on that channel, let alone paused. I'm trying to remember which channel I saw it on. Could have been Sue Smith? POV?

I admire you both for your genuine desire to be honest despite a very realistic fear that speaking out endangers you. How exposed we have become and how externalised. The activists always claim that those who have opinions differing from theirs 'brought cancellation upon themselves'. Thinking has to be extremely distorted and narcissistic to assert that those you abuse are to blame for what you do to them.
He quit the band himself... He showed support for stuff the band didn't like, he quit. No one is entitled to have accomodations made to keep them in Mumford and sons. If their views clash, they clash. He can start his anti-antifa (double negative..?) band and everyone's happy.
Most people "quit" their job rather than get officially thrown out, so let's put that one to rest. Following your logic you would support, for example, an employer with strong religious beliefs sacking somebody because they liked a tweet supporting LGBTQ rights by saying well, they can go off and start their own business. Very grateful for Winston's modeling in the public eye the taking of a stand against Authoritarian BS. His courage is commendable. God bless you, Winston!
Its still so unfathomable to me that a rock and roll band could be so insipid, weak and spineless. There is no logic, no rebellion, no strength, no free will, no intelligence, and NO BALLS in Mumford and Sons! Winston left with his integrity. The manboys left in the band will forever have a niggling feeling in their tiny minds that they failed.
Interesting thought. I suspect they wouldn’t see themselves as being cowards, at least not at that time. They were surrounded by people saying Winston was the bad guy. It would be interesting to see any of them being interviewed on what they thought at the time and what they think now.
You mean the made up insanity? People saying/doing something that causes reaction against them has been happening forever. The insanity is that people who happen to agree with that person just can't accept that their view may not be in the majority view. "Agree with me because reasons!" is their only way of viewing the world.
It's just a push and pull don't worry no one has really woken up. These are just people discussing the consequences they faced. Not discussing change. Be the change. We can't outsource the change we want to see. We are the insanity happening today

I like how Winston casually said at the beginning, when talking about his musical background "yeah, before that l was in a Bluegrass Sleaze Rap band" An everyday occurrence of course.. You are doing a great job Andrew. These interviews are engaging, professional, with appropriate settings and most of all you allow people to talk.
I learned some new things from this interview, so thank you. One thing I cannot let go of though, is that after I have been a lifelong supporter of Israel - I now have such a heart ache for the Palestinians in Gaza, I am shocked that Mr. Marshall (a self professed reader and seeker) is dismissive of the situation in Gaza. The State of Israel has exhibited a gross disregard for lives that are not of the Zionist clan... calling "the others" "animals" as a justification for their (the IDF's) behavior, with thousands of children dead, mutilated or orphaned. Don't get me wrong: Hamas is awful. Now, "Zionists" have proven they can be even worse than Hamas. So many people are afraid to acknowledge this.
Not a fan of the band at all. Always found Mumford and sons to be rubbish but I respect the guy for speaking his truth even if it’s unpopular. Crazy the woke mob is
Andrew....you are knocking the ball outta the park with this channel. Not only mega important topics discussed openly but you yourself really show your true value as a journalist. Keep going ....this is important work 😊
I totally agree with you. I totally agree with you. I know how you felt. I am a small business owner. I watched all my competitors post their BLM hogwash in 2020. I stood my ground and said, it ain't about politics, my business is about business, and I was an island. I stood my ground and didn't post any support for BLM and today I look back and know I was right.
Andrew, I have followed you a bit on your other channel, and appreciate your work on cults. This is the first time I’ve watched this channel but had to because… Winston! I love this work and just subscribed here. Healthy conversation is so needed.
Loved the chat thanks One thing to say on Jews. I grew up totally uneducated on what a Jew person was. All I ever heard was funny jokes in the 70s about how tight they are with money and the Germans killed them all for what reason I didn’t know or think about I just knew they were disliked and treated horribly. Growing up in the North East I probably may have not encountered many Jews. But if I did I could have only judged them on character and how they addressed myself. As I was ignorantly naive back in the day. I wish we were all ignorantly naive of each other from a religious perspective then we would only have character to judge others by.
Brilliant...I love listening to podcasts like this, this is how I'm educating myself at 55 i don't read papers or watch the news anymore I don't trust them. Again brilliant
What led me to Christ was realizing how easily my friends of many years could turn from me if it suited them in the moment. I had made friendship my meaning (as my channel title suggests), so it always came as a shock, especially when it was over something small or nonexistent. Always other people coming in with an opinion and getting in the middle. I just felt ride or die with my friends, us against the world, and I was surprised to see a slight brush of wind could send a friend running. Seeing high profile cases like Seth Rogan and Mumford and Sons (also Richard Dawkins and Ayaan), made me realize that no matter how much success you gain from a worldly relationship, it isn’t something you can lean on in your time of need. Marriage was also clearly demonstrated to be an unreliable insurance in times of need. The world is often with you when you’re high, and against you when you’re low, with some exceptions for close family members (in some cases). God came to me as an atheist and lifted me up, in genuinely miraculous ways, showing me how he’d been there the entire time, and has never let me down once, and has answered every single one of my prayers, changing me into a person that loves and cares about people in a degree that gives me so much joy I could have never imagined. It’s also helped me understand how addiction and craving is at the root of all of these betrayals to ourselves and others. I consider addiction to be the spirit of the anti-Christ, while Christ is somehow, shockingly, a real factor in life. Not just a teacher. I pray that anyone who’s got a bit of openness will at least reach out to God, because when you do, he reveals himself beyond a shadow of a doubt.

Mumford and Sons was one of my favorite bands, love two of their albums and saw them live twice in Arizona. I was very upset when the band did not stand by Winston. I thought Winston was brave for sticking by his convictions. I also like how he had an open mind to actually read things and look for truth. So his bandmates not sticking up for him ticked me off. Most people piling on were not even fans of the band so they were just destroying themselves for nothing.
Isnt that funny, that prob actually the case with a lot of these things. When people try to get people cancelled and venues acquiesce there is no need.
You’re right, all his bandmates should have all capitulated to his dumbass privileged worldview so they would be stuck playing at NASCAR and Trump rallies for the rest of their lives.
The rest of his band mates should be ashamed. They were, and remain, ignorant cowards. Most of us are cowards, that's the problem. People like Winston show us that there are higher ideals to strive for, he deserves all the success he gets from here on.
Yes, group identity and also pursuit of personal advantage were key reasons people in Nazi Germany aligned themselves with the state and didn't challenge the gross inhumanity which characterised its rhetoric and operation.
People fail on their critique quite often. They might hate some aspects of a movement but come up as racists and people who would like to see trans-people in gas-chambers or without equal human rights. You can have a view of purely scientifical sex and still think adults should be called and treated by the gender they like with a few exceptions like some sports or other places where physical strength plays a role. Toilets are a non-issue as rapists rarely rape because it was convenient, they rape because they are horrible people. Its like banning marriage as some huspands rape.

Yids is how we refer to each other, away fans used to call us it to insult us, but now we own it and are proud of it, 90% of Jewish Spurs fans are pleased we use it!
I have seen them a couple of times in concert and Winston was an integral part of the band. I had no clue he departed the band and under such circumstances. A huge loss for Mumford & Sons
To clarify on Spurs supporters calling ourselves the Y army. It was a response to Chelsea, West Ham, and Millwall supporters using anti Jewish chants. My first time watching Spurs at The Lane was against Chelsea in 1986. They made gas chamber hissing sounds after chanting 'we hate Spurs, where's ya foreskin, where's ya foreskin. It's in the Polish ovens' so the intent was very clear . The irony of David Badiel having an issue with Spurs supporters using that word is that he supports Chelsea and would have started doing so when Chelsea supporters were making those noises regularly. It didn't even need to be a game against Spurs, they did it all the time. Just after the 7th October 'event' I was in London, with my then 7 year old daughter, sitting on a bench. I was confronted by a group with Palestinian flags. They were shouting at me, one of them spat on me. I was wearing a Spurs shirt. That is why they started on me.
I think Baddiel's problem with Spurs being the Yid Army is that he is jealous. He would love it if Chelsea were known as the Jewish club and because they not only are not, but their supporters chant some of the most disgusting anti Semitic stuff going, makes him over compensate and demand that Spurs supporters stop using the Yid moniker. He can fuck right off, we are the Yid Army and are proud to be so.
@TheNoo1 Yiddo!! I think you're on to something regarding Baddiel. I am very proud of the Spurs supporters of the past for doing what they did. Daniel Levy and Joe Lewis released a joint statement covering this issue and rigorously defended us using the term. Both men are Jewish, if they support its use, I'm fine with it, too. When challenged about it, I always ask why I should put the feelings of those whose motivations are unclear above those of the Jewish Spurs supporters who often feel supported by it. If an adequate answer is provided to that question my next question is 'do you know the motivation for our use of the term.' I don't remember receiving an accurate answer once. Happy New Year my fellow Spurs supporter.
I couldn't have put it better myself and this is exactly what I would have written. I heard David Baddiel on the radio saying that we should stop singing "Yidarmy", I thought the irony as it was his club who used to chant those songs and as you say make hissing noises, I remember Scholar and the financial struggles before Sugar took over, we were playing Chelsea and they were singing "Where's ya money gone, where's ya money gone", calling us jew boys and throwing pennies into the crowd where we were.

00:00 🎶 Winston Marshall, former banjo player for Mumford & Sons, discusses the politicization of the music industry and the fallout from his critical stance on BLM and antifa. 03:57 🚪 Marshall explains that his departure from Mumford & Sons in March 2021 was triggered by a Twitter post discussing a book on antifa, leading to a significant backlash and a segment on The View and Tucker Carlson. 08:47 🎤 The pressure to conform to certain ideologies in the music industry, especially related to BLM, led to an untenable situation for Marshall within the band. 13:55 🎸 Despite the sadness of leaving Mumford & Sons, Marshall reflects on the 14 years he spent in the band, emphasizing the incredible experiences and contributions. 16:31 🎙 Marshall discusses his transition to the media realm, building up a podcast at The Spectator and launching an independent solo show while exploring other intellectual endeavors. 17:40 🗣 In response to potential cancellations, Marshall followed advice from Jordan Peterson, emphasizing the importance of building other aspects of life for safety and stability. 19:17 🔄 Marshall draws parallels between cancel culture in the creative industry and aspects of cult-like behavior, sharing insights on setting up separate channels to navigate ideological challenges. 21:23 🚫 Cancel culture affects not only well-known figures but also unknown individuals, causing job loss and personal struggles. 22:06 🤔 Cancel culture incidents include cases like a woman being fired for sharing a meme with the ex-Tottenham manager's image and a reference to "yid." 23:15 🔄 The sensitivity around certain words has evolved, with the debate on whether words like the N-word have changed meaning over time. 24:13 🔍 Sensitivity should consider intent, and clear-cut cases of harm should be distinguished from casual use, emphasizing less sensitivity overall. 25:25 📰 Instances where individuals face legal consequences or job loss for expressing opinions or lyrics highlight the severity of cancel culture. 28:12 🎵 The music industry's shift towards politicization led to irrelevant political discussions during press interactions, detracting from the focus on art. 30:06 📰 Media outlets, once countercultural, now exhibit bias, especially when it comes to politically sensitive topics, like Hunter Biden's laptop story. 33:41 🔄 Political tribalism can lead to leniency on certain issues, like left-wing extremism ignoring problems, creating a need for balanced discussions. 35:46 🚫 The taboo around discussing certain issues, like pedophilia, hinders effective solutions and prevention, emphasizing the importance of open dialogue. 39:23 🍷 The challenges of sobriety, especially when faced alone, are discussed, with Winston expressing regret for not being sober earlier in his life. 42:11 🍺 Winston Marshall chooses to remain completely sober due to the chaotic nature of his life and the unpredictability of the future. 43:20 🛐 Winston Marshall discusses his return to faith, attending a high Anglican church, and finding solace and control in the formal setting amid life's chaos. 44:13 🧠 Marshall reflects on the evolutionary need for control and shares his experience with obsessive-compulsive disorder, highlighting the importance of balancing control in life. 46:03 🤔 Winston Marshall shares a story about Jordan Peterson, emphasizing Peterson's earnestness and empathy, contrary to the negative portrayals he sometimes receives. 47:54 🌐 The conversation delves into the challenges of contending with ideological shifts, humility, and the pain of tearing down existing beliefs to rebuild understanding. 51:38 ⚠ Winston Marshall expresses concerns about TikTok's influence, linking it to anti-Israel sentiments and events, emphasizing the need for awareness and potential banning. 55:05 🤝 Discussion on the perception of Jews, intersectionality, and the challenge of countering ideological beliefs that may overlook humanity in favor of ideas. 57:09 🎓 Exploring the psychology of university leaders facing anti-Semitic sentiments, discussing whether they're captured by ideology or striving to fit into a particular narrative. 59:56 🙊 Recognition of the reluctance of some influential figures in the music industry, particularly those with Jewish heritage, to speak out due to potential professional repercussions. 01:01:49 📢 Insight into the challenging climate for expressing heterodox views, with instances of individuals facing backlash for affiliations with specific media outlets. 01:03:22 🎙 Winston Marshall discusses memorable podcast guests, including Father Ted's actor, Robbie Williams, and Amanda Knox. 01:03:48 ⚽ Winston mentions Amanda Knox's nickname "Foxy Noxy" from her soccer-playing days, not based on attractiveness. 01:04:17 🤔 The conversation delves into Amanda Knox's case, exploring opinions on her innocence and the complexity of such high-profile cases. 01:05:26 ⚖ Winston emphasizes the need for absolute certainty before accusing individuals in high-profile cases like Madeleine McCann or Amanda Knox, given the profound impact on their lives. 01:06:07 👀 Amanda Knox's insight on the importance of relying on evidence rather than superficial judgments, as discussed in her documentary and Winston's upcoming book on secrets and psychology.

All of them where respectful enough to be able to let the other person finish and then address their points rather than jumping to personal attacks and stuff . Worlds away from current TV”debates “

Very grateful for Winston's modeling in the public eye the taking of a stand against Authoritarian BS. His courage is commendable. God bless you, Winston!
hahahahahahahahahaahaaa
A wonderfully clueless comment LOL
Its still so unfathomable to me that a rock and roll band could be so insipid, weak and spineless. There is no logic, no rebellion, no strength, no free will, no intelligence, and NO BALLS in Mumford and Sons! Winston left with his integrity. The manboys left in the band will forever have a niggling feeling in their tiny minds that they failed.
They’re a bunch of rich kids desperate to portray themselves as with the downtrodden. Nauseating.
There hasn't been a great rock band since Kings of Leon imo....identity politics poisons everything...specifically people
Some of these people are so open minded their brains have fallen out. Winston was honest & I agree with him. Great interview, Andrew!
I do like their music, but the cowardice shown by his bandmates throughout the period of his cancellation was very disappointing
Interesting thought. I suspect they wouldn’t see themselves as being cowards, at least not at that time. They were surrounded by people saying Winston was the bad guy. It would be interesting to see any of them being interviewed on what they thought at the time and what they think now.
Two reasonable, intelligent men speaking sense.
@@stephenpotts832 Thankfully it is objectively true.

the insanity is all in your head conjured up by the corporate media, grifters and conspiracy peddlers.
Too little, too late, but yeah.....

This listen was time well spent! Loved every minute. Thank you.
Thank you for producing and posting this.
Not a fan of the band at all. Always found Mumford and sons to be rubbish but I respect the guy for speaking his truth even if it’s unpopular. Crazy the woke mob is

I totally agree with you. I totally agree with you. I know how you felt. I am a small business owner. I watched all my competitors post their BLM hogwash in 2020. I stood my ground and didn't post any support for BLM and today I look back and know I was right.

One thing to say on Jews.
But character is valid because of God
Brilliant...I love listening to podcasts like this, this is how I'm educating myself at 55 i don't read papers or watch the news anymore I don't trust them.

It took me approximately 5 minutes of research on BLM back in 2020 to realize that I wanted nothing to do with them

@Winston, I just found you through your speech on populism at Oxford. Excellent work! Then I saw you play guitar.... so do I, then I found this. It is fantastic that you stood up for yourself. It is very hard to fight mass psychosis events of recent history.
Good for him that he didn’t fold and back down. I wish him the very best.

Yes, group identity and also pursuit of personal advantage were key reasons people in Nazi Germany aligned themselves with the state and didn't challenge the gross inhumanity which characterised its rhetoric and operation.
And fear. For most it was probably being terrified of the reprisals inflicted upon anyone suspected of not being 100% supportive of the regime

The spirit of Guthrie?! Oh please. Guthrie was an actual hero....and a radical leftist.
