    I've read that Pavlova closely observed swans in real life to capture their movement. That combination of classicism and real life is stunning.

    The Great Pavlova... Tragic 120 seconds of dying wounded bird, which the last effort flies, loses altitude and fighting for his elusive life... This dance has become an immortal masterpiece... The one you watch without breathing. And every time you wait and hope that the Swan will not wave its wing for the last time in the agony of death...

      Anna Pavlova's house in London, in Hamstead, near the Bull and Bush pub, had a small lake with swans outside. A hunter, by error or intentionally, I don't know, shot one of these beautiful birds. Anna was watching it dying and in the same evening she imitated his movements in Covent Garden. That's what I have been told by a friend while we were walking near this house one nice May afternoon.

    I love the little bits of dance history you share! I've also noticed how different Pavlova's version is to today's version. Her's always seemed more desperate, and almost literally wrestling with death while today's version, like you said is more of Odette. It makes sense now that you've explained it!

    • @viktoriaironpride4977
      @viktoriaironpride4977 4 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Mikhail Fokine made this little dance on Pavlova, and I think the only one to whom he personally taught it was Tamara Toumanova. You are correct--today;s version is not like Fokine's creation.

    Why does this incredible performance impress so many of us who watch the ballet with tears of admiration? In my humble opinion, because it's perfectly represents the “Belle Epoque”... dying, like a beautiful and fragile swan that lived so short.

    I recommend watching it at 0.75 speed (go to video configurations and there you can select it). Videos from those times are accelerated, if you watch it at 0.75 you'll listen to the tempo closer to what might have been, and her movements are much better appreciated.

Knowing that, I had to come and have a look, I can see why we gave her such an honour. I have Pavlova instead of birthday cake each year, it has been a favourite of mine all my life. It is called being en pointe. It takes years to master the technique and strength that it takes to go en pointe safely. Many dancers go en pointe at age eleven or twelve, but that is only after years of training and evaluations from their instructors.The pointe shoe has a "shank" that supports the dancer and allows them to rise up onto the "box", which is what they dance on.

    i really love this, im proud to know her, and seeing how much her version is different than today is so cool, she really looked like a dying swan by her wings trying to fly.
