Wow! Boingo in the early days when I was wee lad of 20 years old, I thought they were the best band ever! Now, having just turned 50? Still my favorite band ever....
Dave Howland Wow, Dave, you and me both almost the same time, I turned 51 earlier this year. I also LOVED Oingo Boingo in my 20s, and also love them to this day. I wish we had the Internet when we were in our 20s. How cool would THAT have been, but then again, se had to search for the arcane knowledge of music the hard way, in record shops and in Billboard, so are we not far more rich in spirit than the lads and lasses of today who have the world's information available with a couple of keystrokes? And, we both learned the Dewey Decimal system, so we can find knowledge after the electronic apocalypse. So, we got THAT going for us. Which is nice.
He doesn’t sound like that now for sure when he speaks. This is the first time I’ve ever heard him with THIS voice and I’ve seen many interviews with him. Very interesting!
Dick Clark was such a thoughtful interviewer. He tried to gain some quick insight into people. Where's the song before the interview. Boingo is such a great band.
Awesome 👌! Been a fan since around 1983 when I was a sophomore in high school at age 14. 1st saw them on the Gong Show when I was 11 or 12 😁. Bought every album since too and saw them in concert 3x. 1st was the best (Del Mar Fair in 1984 or 1985). Somewhat funny story behind it. Myself and 2 surfing buddies and fellow Oingo fans were waiting in line for 2 hours at the fair for a free concert by Oingo Boingo. All of a sudden a large group of people came frantically running by.. we didn't want to loose our place in line but took a chance and followed the crowed, ran though some buildings, corridors and wound up in on some bleachers at eye level dam smack directly to the middle of the stage about 17 ft. away! They played almost 3 hours and played all 3 albums they had out at the time plus a few new songs too. Was incredible and along with the crowds energy, being 17/18 y.o., the night's sea breeze........was a magical night 🌙🎶😊.
Very lucky you got to see them live!! Do you remember any of the new songs they played? They always had a load that never made it to any of their records.
What is this biography they speak of? I LOVE how Leon just casually strokes his sax...and then SLAM BAM, Sluggo Phipps! "Nobody spanks Sluggo" THAT cracks me up every time!
Much later in life, Elfman will write the score to the following movies Edward Scissorhands in 1990, peewees big adventure in 1985, Dick Tracy in 1990, The Simpsons in 1989, Batman in 1989, Mission impossible in 1996 and many many many more. What an incredible talented man Danny Elfman is! ❤🔥❤🔥❤🔥
Glad got to see them live back in the 1980's at the Irvine Amphitheater & they put on great show! Danny had to stop performing as playing live was affecting his hearing.
Those late October/Halloween shows at Irvine Meadows were the greatest.... I still get chills thinking back to the '88 show where the full moon crested over the top of the stage just as they started the opening lines of "No One Lives Forever."
@@siriusylee I'm not taking anything away from any of them as talented & competent musicians. I'm referring specifically to the unique chemistry that made this band an unstoppable creative force on the first 3 Oingo Boingo LPs and everything that preceded them -- including the amazing "Mystic Knights" era.
Words cannot express my contempt for this mayonnaise queen, Clark, who slathered the biz with his careless arrogance...he hated the music and the musicians.

@@bropous4265 Music definitely isn't as magical now that any song is available in an instant.
@@ReaperKezia Plus most music was fairly easy to understand. A lot of music now, is hard to know what they are mumbling about..
Only a lad, eh?
Me Too in my fifties. I was a fanatic fan and watching this and the Budweiser commerical just now reminds me why.
Back when they were only a lad.
ha Ha HA !!!
Oh man! I use play that song in my college dorm room. what memories 😎
He was like 30
Not what I thought Danny would sound like, just from his singing voice.
He doesn’t sound like that now for sure when he speaks. This is the first time I’ve ever heard him with THIS voice and I’ve seen many interviews with him. Very interesting!

That moment when Sluggo realizes Danny doesn’t actually know his name.
Such a great drummer...the "Vatos"

NOBODY spanks Sluggo
Hello, nice to meet you. My name's Nobody
What is this biography they speak of? I LOVE how Leon just casually strokes his sax...and then SLAM BAM, Sluggo Phipps! "Nobody spanks Sluggo" THAT cracks me up every time!
Tiff - IAmVincentPrice I think he was referring to their press bio that got sent out ahead of the release of Good For Your Soul, not a book biography
The magic that you get when you have to stretch for time for the new year's eve show! What a nice little bit introducing the band!
What a great time to be 18 years old and exiting High School!
Still listening to them in 2020
Oingo Boingo's "Only a Lad" is a banger front to back. Super rare vinyl.
Greatest live band ever.
The spirit will live
IT WILL LIVE
Sluggo smiled hehehe...
umumum1 LOL, I know, right?
But he seems like a very good guy.
This is literally the only time I can remember seeing him smile
Dick Clark is always such a gentleman in these short interviews
Like how the description says. "The singer of Oingo Boingo...." Yeah, he's only Emmy and Grammy Award-winning and Academy Award Nominee Danny Elfman
RayNDeere this was well before all that, though you raise a valid point.
RayNDeere Who cares about awards?? Elfman is all about the music
And I still feel like the fact Trent reznor won an Oscar for his pathetic score and Danny hasn't yet..to be the biggest insult there ever was.
They've got a beat, and you can dance to them!
“A bizarre Bongo virus”
Modern day Mozart, ladies & gentlemen!!!! 👏🏻👏🏾👏👏🏿👏🏻
Haha! Teeny little Dale. He was the Radar O'Reilly of the band.
I know, he looks so short 😭
I can’t believe I have a crush about 80s Danny elfman 😮
Let’s build a time machine so we can make the first move!😃⏳️🌌
By god I was three years old. Best band ever though.
I was -23.
😵💫I didn’t know that was Danny’s ordinary voice.👨🦰🧡
Saw them perform on an L.A. station, a show called MV3
Yeah that was pre MTV but was also a KROQ DJ project I think, became MTV (Richard blade, etc co.).
The two guys that didn't stick around. Ribbs and Hatch.
I was amazed to discover that Kerry was the bass player for Madonna during her 1987 "Who's That Girl" tour !
Viva Oingo Boingo!
I miss those days

This is PRIME TIME Oingo, when the band had "that ol' black magic".
When Gibbs & Hatch departed, they took the magic with them.
hey, give Avila and the multitude of keyboardists some credit'

@@Tangento ah, alright, that clears things up. I understand, and I agree for that matter'
Kinda like Devo was never the same without Alan on drums adding that magic something. Creative chemistry is weird and precious.
@@carlodave9 Agreed, my friend.
Terrific clip
Compare it to his Halloween show at the Hollywood bowl last year - he is jacked up now
This was much nicer than I expected, I saw them at the Ritz Some holiday in '87 (New Years? Halloween?)
Waiting on a reunion.
Mr.Mystery. OMFG.
American Bandstand, 01/01/1983
nobody spanks sluggo
slug
nobody touches his ass or he will inhale them w his saxophone
i hate my humour
ruler of the rats LMAOOOO I LOVE IT
They had just gotten done touring with the Police! It would have been cool to see them at Castle Farms in Charlevoix MI in summer 1982.
This was a New Year’s Rockin’ Eve show. See the hats? Dick mentions The new year.
Which song played before the interview?
Not sure but I distinctly remember seeing them play gray matter on AB, not sure if it was this appearance
Steeb's Dot th-cam.com/video/yxzClMN5vH4/w-d-xo.html
1984
Wake Up (1984) would be my guess since this interview was in 1983 & Dick Clark was mentioning their album would be out when stores open on Jan 2nd.
why did they call him sluggo
Why does Danny Elfman sound like Tom Wilson?
Wow this is old. You actually had to wait for stores to open back up after New Years day back then?
Is it different now?
Well spoken
daddy elfman
fair enough
danny dilfman
haha, Schneiderman funny smile
also Sluggo just wasn't having it with the "Slam-Bam, Sluggo Phipps"
("slam bam, thank you, mam" reference?)
Always remember… No one spanks Sluggo
Danny 🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤
no one spanks sluggo
Brass section are too professional to joke, lol.
Boingoism
Yea.

"dc" DICK clark productions XD...Oingo Boingo forever!!!❤👍
Where's the beef??? How about the song?
Pensé que iban a tocar pero salió algo mejor

Year old ,,
I forget
He looks like he’s about to eat him 💀
Kerry Hatch is a bottom
what compelled you to type this.
Ribbs looks like Reed Richards
He talked boingo virus spread the world. So close, korona.
Literally no song being played live..ill never get those minutes back in my life!
Back when the words "in the closet" had no meaning.
silence
Danny is the gayest straight man I’ve seen
