My wife manages a small nhs clinic of 4 nurses. Obviously, I can't say more. The salaries of her and her other 3 nurses adds up to about 133k per year. Each year the nhs spends about 45 to 55k on various interpreters for her tiny clinic. Most of the patients have been here decades. It's a joke. Imagine what the bill is nationwide. The judicial system will be every bit as bad.
There should be the expectation that if you don't understand the doctor then that's your problem. There should be English, Welsh, and Gaelic interpreters, thats about it.

the 'justice' department use outsourcing and agencies so they can get rid of people as suits them. they don;t want the hassle of employment with difficult stuff like employee rights.
Not just the justice department, the NHS outsources many things, many hospital buildings are essentially outsourced on a PPI initiative (some company buys / builds the building, NHS get instant money / free hospital) then the NHS pays rent/maintenance for ever more, so in the end it would have been cheaper to keep everything in house, but on the balance sheet for a few years you're in the black, and you can kick the money problem down the line.

I have to say my ex wife who is Spanish had an interpreture for our family court hearing, the lady said nothing at all. All she did was hold up the hearings with technal issues on the court video call. Given that my ex lived with me in London for over 8 years... I found it a needles waist of public money personally.

Not just the justice department, the NHS outsources many things, many hospital buildings are essentially outsourced on a PPI initiative (some company buys / builds the building, NHS get instant money / free hospital) then the NHS pays rent/maintenance for ever more, so in the end it would have been cheaper to keep everything in house, but on the balance sheet for a few years you're in the black, and you can kick the money problem down the line.

No, £22B is what New Labour started & the Conservatives & LIb Dems continued (albeit they cut the rate at which it grew). That's the national debt, what the leaflet is saying is that the extra cost for the agency interpreters is adding to this debt. Personally I think it's misleading they specified £22B as it's clear that some people misread it and assume that's what is being spent on interpreters, and for their case the size of the national debt isn't relevant.
