i am watching scaffolding going up to put new gutters on a council and privately owned property, i quoted for this job and was shown the quotes from the council approved contractors, we were £1500 less then the next cheapest . seems there is a grand of back hander involved with getting the job. i also saw a few council vans outside of a private property fitting a kitchen . for who? council dont do private work as far as i know. seems there is a lucrative pockel doing other work while being payed and transport supplied and probably materials as well by the tax payer. the list is long of how they steal our money to enrich their own lives. like filling their cars from the council fuel bowsers.

I was amazed to learn that some councils have been speculating with council funds on stocks and currency, and when it all goes wrong the council is deep in debt.
I haven't heard of council staff being held accountable and charged with misuse of public funds.

      Absolutely astonishing.

There was an article in the Mail about Thurrock council. They borrowed more than 500 million pounds to invest in solar farms, but the promised returns had been hugely exaggerated so apparently the council is technically bankrupt. Canterbury council borrowed getting on for 200 million pounds to invest in two shopping centres, but of course lots of shops are closing now and retail isn't doing well. The council reckon it'll take decades to get the money back. How are they allowed to borrow huge amounts of money then plead poverty and cut services?! There was another council, I forget which one now, that borrowed money to have a huge new building erected. The cost of it ended up going over budget by about three times the original estimate, so that council is in dire straits as well.

The thing with supported hostels is that there are staff on premises during working hours, or even 24/7 in some cases. Also, your bills are included in the rent. At least they were in the hostels I stayed in. Some of the hostels even included food. I remember staying in one with everything including food, and housing benefit didn't cover the entire rent and I was spending all but about £12 every week of my benefits to top up the rent and that didn't give me enough money for other things like toiletries and travel expenses. Which sucked. It was much better in the cheaper hostels where I bought my own food, at least then I could choose what I ate as the food they gave you wasn't the best. That wasn't even the worst hostel I stayed in. The rooms were actually quite nice. One had shared rooms, and I lasted 2 nights in that hell hole.

Lets not forget that councils in London are allowing flats to be pulled down and new apartments to be built and the only ones who can afford to live in those new blocks are the well off. So this creates a shortage of available housing for those on the bottom and the only alternative is for them to find places outside London. They’re building new homes but not for local people who aren’t well off.

With most council properties if you are on Universal Credit they won't pay the service charges and the claimant is expected to pay the remainder from their benefits. So for example, if the full rent is £1,500 per month and the service charges are £200 per month and you get £368 personal allowance on UC then you will be left with £168 per month to live on.

It's all a big scam... When i got a place in the YMCA the rent was something like 200 quid a week for a tiny box room with shared toilet/shower.. 24 rooms a floor/8 floors for homeless/needy. 2 floors for cruse ship trainee's paying the same 200 each but 3 to a room, another floor that could by hired out. That place was making a bloody mint... 99.9% of the people in the 8 floors were not working so its all goverment funded. It all the great charity scam....

Seems to me the problem once again is living in the city verses living in the country. You wouldn't get rents of over a grand pm for a shipping container where I live and I can get to Bristol (outskirts) in 30 minutes where they are charging that price. My last rental was £590 a month for a 2 bed house and it was on the a38 about 40 minutes from Bristol and had I wanted to commute to there it would have been not too bad.
