Sometimes I’m feeling a bit silly and can’t be bothered taking the process entirely seriously 🤪 This was actually a fairly straightforward edit as I didn’t have a script. Took about 10hours to edit.
FIrst and foremost I like that you did this video in this weather. I love that you made it clear you didn't camp in that weather. Adapting to the circumstances is important. And I love that you show real irish weather. I'm not a hiker due to physical limitations, but I am a monetary supporter of my local mountain rescue. There are many people, from the cities as well as abroad that tend to terribly underestimate at least the Wicklows, but i guess same goes for all mountain ranges in Ireland. The weather is what gets you in Ireland. Videography, storytelling and composition where excellent and a joy to watch, but you keeping it real was the outstanding feature of this video for me. Have a good one!
Thanks I’m also always thinking about what option will be most safe, enjoyable and also what will let me make a worthwhile video. It was a combination of things that made me rethink the camp. The weather was a big factor, but that combined with loosing light and the potential for a risky descent in the dark carrying a lot of weight didn’t seem the best option. Yeah casual hikers can really underestimate the weather here. I’ve seen people in tee shirts and shorts looking very miserable after heading out in sunshine and getting hit by wind and rain that came from nowhere. I once went hiking with a guy who is a proper alpinist and he couldn’t get over how windy it was here at such low altitudes
Another highly informative video, thank you Stephen 1:23 I remember those silver pipes that cross the Bloody bridge river being dug in around the face of the mountain in the mid 1980's. Years later i worked in a quarry where the man that drilled the granite on this water pipe project also worked, he said the Mourne granite was soft to drill but every evening before quitting time you had to remove the boring bar tubes and the hammer from the holes because overnight the granite cooled down and shrunk just enough to jam the hammer drill bit so the boring rig couldn't start it turning the next day. In normal quarry blue stone you can leave everything in the holes and carry on the next day with no problems.
I have to hand it to you for actually proving that light green surrounded by brown is almost always boggy and dangerous. I first learned of this in an old book written by A.A. Luce, Fishing and Thinking.
I'm unsure I could handle carrying a 20kg backpack up a mountain, but your enthusiasm is contagious! The video was really well-made, and I loved the humor, Sir

@martymartin2894 Yeah, all that carbon being pumped into the atmosphere is awful. Would be great if we could continue pushing for cleaner energy sources!

Sorry but I've only just watched it. And what a place. Wow that is one place I wouldn't won't to work, how dangerous, it is dangerous enough just getting up there, thanks Stephen for letting us see this place and loving the new tent, take care of yourself and yours. Alan 💯⛺👍
Thank you for another astonishing video on incredible conditions! I just can't imagine what were the working conditions for the men at the golgen ages of the quarry... Try not to take too much risks only for filming purpposes even the results are always fantastics! Love from France
Thanks 🙂 would have been miserable up there in bad weather. Sometimes if it’s a really cold winter, the water in the quarry freezes and forms massive icicles. Turns it into a wonderland
@@StephenJReid I wish attempt to educate you. Your jab at the US was tasteless. While the current government of the United States is 248 years, and colonization by White Europeans started about four hundred years ago, some of my ancestors came here from Beringia about 14,000 to 25,000 years ago... Had she possessed the power of the US economy & military she would have caused even more damage than she did... Unfortunately, we will soon see the revenge of Donald Trump because racist white people bought into his hate, such as claiming that Mexicans are rapists, drug dealers & murderers and that Haitian Refugees are eating people's cats & dogs. During the first Trump term I had abusive, violent altercations with seven men proudly wearing their MAGA Hat. One even wrecked my wife's car while I was in the supermarket for twenty minutes to get a few things after Sunday's Jazz Gospel Service. He had been previously banned from said supermarket for hitting me with his shopping cart in the checkout line, shouting at me saying "deport yourself to Mexico you god d^mned Sp-word". But there is no protection in the US for those of us who are of obvious Indigenous Ancestry, but who are not a member of a Federally Recognized Native Nation. Despite having an almost European complexion I don't pass for white, as I have Native Features, Native Hair and even am two feet wide at the shoulders at almost six feet tall... So yes the US is really going to be aggressive as long as Trump and his racist minions are in power, but that will suck the most for those of us who don't pass their racial purity standards. Expect the Trump Administration to also deport Latino Americans who are citizens and retroactively take away the citizenship of Latinos, and probably Native Americans. But then we Natives have only been considered as being citizens and having the rights of US citizens for about a hundred years. And Trump still blames a Native Casino for the death of his Casino in Atlantic City which failed when he could no longer use it to launder money for organized crime as they were paying at least 25% for the laundering...
@StephenJReid Stephen - any thoughts to weigh in on the planned cable car from the Donard car park to Thomas Quarry on the Newcastle side? Seems like a massive waste of resources that could be better spent on maintaining the walking paths, access and litter no?
I still can’t decide how I fully feel about it. I don’t like to respond to things like that without fully researching all angles. Currently I can see both positives and negatives. Often with these kinds of projects it’s not as simple as having the possibility of the money being used elsewhere. Quite often the funding is only for single big projects of certain types. I’d love to see parking, trails and facilities improved around the Mournes. Ott carpark immediately comes to mind and the trail across from it. Also think Newcastle really does need some kind of outdoors hub in Donard Park. Or funding for rangers during the summer months
Very enjoyable. I very much appreciate the humor! Our weather on the US west coast is very similar... very unappetizing to be out, but you have to do it anyways to keep your sanity.
another absolute banger of a video Stephen. I will totally admit I have walked past that offshoot path a few times and wondered what was up there. Defo going to explore it next time I am in the Bloody bridge area.
i've been watching quite a few camping youtubers lately and came across your channel a few days ago and you've quickly become my personal favourite. The combination of great camera work, wonderful drone shots, your seemingly endless pool of interesting facts and tidbits ON TOP of showing great camping content and having a sparkling personality makes you an absolute joy to watch. I hope you can keep doing what you're doing and being a breathe of fresh air on this platform!
Winter may be dark and gloomy where you are but where I live, we get about 2m of snowfall per year and everything is frozen solid for months. Here, official campgrounds are closed until May, lots of bike paths will be unplowed and covered in snow until April, some hiking trails will close until everything is frozen then close again during thaw, etc. So I'm kind of envious that you can still somewhat go outside, and will be watching you in miserable weather from my frozen wasteland, while we both wait for spring.
Been up there a Few times. Had a nice jam wheaten sandwich up by the big pulley…tried for about ten mins to turn that handle……I’ll tell you, Eddie hall couldn’t budge it. It’s a cool place but like you say, the way up ain’t great….even On a Dry day those rocks between the rails aren’t the most steady. I also done my ankle in at the quarry about 5 years ago, took my near 3 hours to get back to bloody bridge. Some great memories heading up that way……the gorse at the bottom around March/April is unreal the smell of it and the yellow mixes with the blue blue sky…….you’d think you were in France or some mad place. Next you the ben from reservoir…..you should have seen in this summer……I’ve never seen it as low….must have been 200ft of a beach at the head of it. After the last few days I’d say she’s fairly filled up though. Cheers.
Great video, the sunless gloom made it so atmospheric and the colours of the vegetation really stood out in contrast.. Those Old industrial remains are fascinating. Many thanks ,really enjoyed it.

thanks Ivan. Yeah I keep forgetting how much extra time I need to give myself once the shorter days are here. Camping there on a clear night watching the stars would be amazing
@7:08, was that a big black circular stone? From the 2 seconds of footage and the angle, it reminded me of th stones an ammonite fossil is found.. doubtless I completely wrong though.
Really glad you enjoyed our pancakes. We take pride in using local fresh eggs, buttermilk and flour and of course all handmade. Thanks again #thehomebakeryrathfriland #fresh bread and treats made daily.
You serious? Are you the baker?! 😂 That’s amazing, how did you find this video? Pancakes were indeed excellent, was expecting them to be a bit dry, but no, perfect with the actual apple in them. Going to have to pick up another packet from the Barbican next time I’m down.
@ yes I am the baker. A customer of ours had watch your video and noticed the pancakes and then send us a Facebook post. We also do an apple and raspberry pancake which would eat similar with no butter. Watching your video it was really well done. You put a lot of time and effort into it. Well done to you. Glad you enjoyed.
Hugely entertaining as always! May the wind always be at your back...but not when you're standing on a cliff edge ( obviously!)😮😊 looked lethal underfoot!
I love barefoot shoes. Saved my spine, knees, and hips. Took a bit of time but it's all I wear these days. I look a bit funny in a frock though! Don't care. 😅
your content is so amazing and enjoyable to watch especially to a person like me who absolutely loves to do these things but lives in a place with neither city nor nature (saudi arabia). one day i may be able to have adventures like these. ❤
Hi Stephen,, a very polished and exceptionally well put together video, always informative but extremely hilarious at the same time, my partners brother has a film production company in London dealing with the likes of netflix and universal and she says that you have it Stephen, well done,,,
Great video Stephen as always😁. Really enjoying the history aspect in your content, it's like a different world up there😁. I love the look of the Vern 1. What put me off buying one was simply down to the weight, just a little too heavy at my age😂 so went with the Terra Nova Southern Cross 1, a full kg lighter but obviously not the same space 😁
Another great video Steven, have been loving your content as of late. Have you thought about a video exploring Thomas Quarry and the Proposed Mourne Gateway Project?
Yeah I’ve thought about it. Still making my mind up on what I feel about it. It’s a topic that requires a decent amount of reading and research to say anything meaningful about and I’ve already a couple of research heavy videos in the works
@@StephenJReid Its a very divisive project for sure. Certainly if you attended the public consultations you would think there is little local support for it. It would be great to get your usual in depth and honest look at the subject.
Incredible how you get a produced and ready to view video done and out in under 4 days! There is so much work involved in your work most will never understand. Yeah that’s a long drag up from the Bloody Bridge but yeah love that trail up the old BOGIE route. Question: where do you purchase one of those launch-control tents? Amazon with their fire-regs though will refuse carriage due to the said risk.
3hours driving, 10hours out hiking and filming and about a 12hour edit. Editing was fairly straightforward for this one, I didn’t overshoot too much. Sometimes edits can be 40hours. Only places stocking those tents are firework shops
The rather large fragments (3 chunks) from St Patrick's cross, on display down in Downpatrick Cathedral originated from Bloody Bridge area. Bit of trivia I learned on my visit there a few weeks ago. Aye, that looks like fairly typical Mourne Mountain weather for this time of the year. I'm hoping for better conditions down Cader Idris in a few days, hunting for what remains of another wartime crash, but if the weather is anything like the conditions you have just experienced, I shall probably do a brewery tour instead. Plan B😂
@stephenjreid ermmmm I guess dry is a relative term? 😅 I’d say it was better than I expected tbh, kinda damp up at the doorway end but given the lack of porch I half expected a nightmare Definitely a learning curve but I slept well, and it was enjoyable despite the craziness of sliding like a worm In and out during the moments of lighter rain 🥹 the night after the rain it was a clear sky so I could lie looking up at the stars which was incredible!
Loved that, I think a bit of gloom and clag really adds to the atmosphere, especially given the location and history. Another great job on research and education. I dont know how you remember it all. glad you like the Vern 1. Out of interest Stephen, what did you base your wind ratings of 30 to 35mph on? ATB, still laighing at Synonym, as I share the same affliction!
Well we did it we went up at 5am to try and see the sunrise which looking back was abit dumb cause the weather was crap and trying to scale that railway with a small torch nearly ended badly a few times but we got made it down and out before noon and in one piece lol
been bouldering up the bloody bridge river (name comes from a massacre in one of irelands many rebellions). never been able to find out what it was called before the massacre though, seems to be lost in the mists of time. Or maybe they were just waiting for something heinous to happen before naming it? hadnt realised there was so much of interest further up - defo worth a walk in better weather. not sure you picked the right boots for that walk - did you not feel every rock you stood on? dont think your audition for the "im a celebrity Jungle Shower scene" will get you a spot on the next series, soz.
Much prefer those boots to normal hiking boots. I’d never go back except for maybe snow and ice conditions. Made a video about them: th-cam.com/video/62jbnhoQmAY/w-d-xo.htmlsi=aGVrzzTBm1KG-3Np It’s amazing how much you can easily miss in somewhere you are familiar with. I’ve walked through and past that quarry loads of times but this is the first time I explored it properly

I've been wondering where that place is for years! I ended up at that railroad while out on a hike taking random wierd paths. Awesome, thanks!
Absolutely amazing place Stephen some great local history.
Shame you couldn't camp there but safety first as always.
thanks Ivan. Yeah I keep forgetting how much extra time I need to give myself once the shorter days are here. Camping there on a clear night watching the stars would be amazing
used to collect them stone samples too from magazine awsome times
😁
Excellent video Stephen, I really enjoyed that. Nice tent too. You can never have enough pockets! 😂
Found your channel on the 7th of November for that very reason. A welcome respite.
Hope I helped you escape all the chaos for a while. Elections are crazy times
Enjoyed very much 😊
Good video - once again you show what an awesome place the Mournes are - haven't been there since I left in 2001 - I need to drag myself back there!
Thanks Phil 🙂
@@StephenJReid nearly forgot - I missed the Tolkien reference in this video - was there one??
Excellent video, this is why I subscribe. enjoyable! Cheers Vancouver Island Canada just so you know we put maple syrup on our pancakes
thanks! I once had a boss from Vancouver
5:48 I’m convinced you plant these banana peels 😂
@@BenLuney 😂 everything’s a conspiracy these days 😂
@7:08, was that a big black circular stone? From the 2 seconds of footage and the angle, it reminded me of th stones an ammonite fossil is found.. doubtless I completely wrong though.
Brilliant video, again. Thanks, Stephen!
Thanks
😂 thanks. Was a slippy descent. Much easier with a light day pack
Almost the big 100k! 🎉
😱😃 it’s all accelerated in the last few months. Did not think it would be this year.
Just bought a pair of vivobarefoot boots thanks to you! Made sure to use your code aswell 😊
Thanks and enjoy! Love mine
Thanks 🙂 I hope you get to do this someday
Great video Stephen! Greetings from Brazil
Thanks for watching! 🙂 🇧🇷
Cracking video, loved the Thomas the tank theme tune😂
Hi Stephen,, a very polished and exceptionally well put together video, always informative but extremely hilarious at the same time, my partners brother has a film production company in London dealing with the likes of netflix and universal and she says that you have it Stephen, well done,,,
Thanks David 🙂
Great one also I want that tent ⛺️ 😊
Stephen, you are a nuuuter. In the best possible way, of courses 😊
High praise indeed 😁
Great video, interesting location, love watching ❤❤
Thanks for watching Alan
Loved that Stephen, a real gritty atmosphere 🙈
Thanks Gary 🙂 My damp cameras and mics still drying out 🤣
Great video Stephen as always😁.
I loved my SC1 apart from the space. I’m 5’11” and was just too cramped for me plus all my filming kit
@@StephenJReidfor sure, the Vern 1 is a bigger and better tent, just at a cost for weight
Great vid. Newgrange is probably 6500 years old...they say..
Brilliant mate….kaboom tent ⛺️ pitched! 💣
I don’t know why more tents don’t do it
Another great video Steven, have been loving your content as of late.
Great video, beautifully shot!
Thanks for watching 🙂
Wow! Incredible production, great story telling and humor (Rocks and minerals are cool)!
thanks for watching 😁
You know I like a good rock Win, win, win, with this one!
Rock on
Cracking video as always love your humour your video's are amazing to watch and I love the history you share Cracking new tent atvb Jimmy 😎😎👍👍
Fantastic video 👌🤩 Greetings from Austria 👋
🇦🇹 👋
Plan B😂
I tried out my new ridge raider in heavy rain in snowdonia last weekend 😁 and I didn’t hate it! It was kind of ridiculous.. but… satisfying!
That’s great! Did you manage to stay dry getting in and out of it?
@stephenjreid ermmmm I guess dry is a relative term? 😅 I’d say it was better than I expected tbh, kinda damp up at the doorway end but given the lack of porch I half expected a nightmare
Definitely a learning curve but I slept well, and it was enjoyable despite the craziness of sliding like a worm In and out during the moments of lighter rain 🥹 the night after the rain it was a clear sky so I could lie looking up at the stars which was incredible!
Oh. And eating a pot noodle whilst lying face down. That’s mental
I collected the same mineral and rock collection and yes it was from the mid 90s 😂
😂 excellent, seems there were a few of us!
I collected rocks I thought looked cool as a child and had the magazine you are talking about 😂
Loved that, I think a bit of gloom and clag really adds to the atmosphere, especially given the location and history. Another great job on research and education. I dont know how you remember it all. glad you like the Vern 1. Out of interest Stephen, what did you base your wind ratings of 30 to 35mph on? ATB, still laighing at Synonym, as I share the same affliction!
I love your videos.
I want that tent!!!😂
Ireland, live in the Clouds. No wonder the Vikings came and stayed. :D
😂
Great videos as ever (keep making those videos ...even in the clag!) - How waterproof do you find those Vivobarefoot Esc boots @Stephen?
Shouting "BOGIES" will be lost on so many people 😂
i enjoyed this video so much me my brother and some friends are heading there on the 30th lol
Enjoy and remember to go prepared.
@StephenJReid yeah I listened to what you took lol
@StephenJReid also just watched the atomic bomb (it was great) and the lough neagh poisoned video that one was a real eye opener!!!
Well we did it we went up at 5am to try and see the sunrise which looking back was abit dumb cause the weather was crap and trying to scale that railway with a small torch nearly ended badly a few times but we got made it down and out before noon and in one piece lol
@ glad you got up and down in one piece! Yeah wouldn’t want to do it in the dark
Really enjoyed that. Take some butter for your pancakes next time! That gave me a dry mouth 😅
Haha. They were very moist, full of minced apple
been bouldering up the bloody bridge river (name comes from a massacre in one of irelands many rebellions). never been able to find out what it was called before the massacre though, seems to be lost in the mists of time.
Made a video about them: th-cam.com/video/62jbnhoQmAY/w-d-xo.htmlsi=aGVrzzTBm1KG-3Np
It’s amazing how much you can easily miss in somewhere you are familiar with. I’ve walked through and past that quarry loads of times but this is the first time I explored it properly
