Exactly!! My daughter doesn't have much money and asked me what I wanted for mother's day, I told her nothing. She insisted and I told her just get a $10.00 gift card. She ended up getting me $25.00. 🤦♀️ I'm grateful for it but honestly didn't want anything. Just a Happy Mother's Day was enough.
If I ever have family like that, I'd ask that they donate that money in my name to the local not-for-profit animal shelter/city pound. As in, buy things like dog and cat food, treats, toys, beds, blankets, trees, leashes, collars, etc, and take them to the shelter.
Should've been done in private to begin with, Frankie. I think it was cheap too, but I wouldn't have berated him in front of her or anyone else. Sends his MIL (main character's mother) a $20 gift card for her birthday... Sends his own mother on a holiday and spends thousands of dollars. Ridiculous. Why didn't he just send both his mum and MIL on a vacation together? That's what I would have done. Not only is it a great opportunity for two of the most important women in my life (other than my Nana) to get together and bond, it would be a great present. However, I'd only do this if my mother and the mother of my spouse like one another and want to spend that time together. The only other fair thing would have been to send a gift card of equal value to both ladies. Either that or send them both to a spa retreat for the day (separately, of course). That way you are spending the same amount of money on both your MIL and your mum.

I do personally think with a bit more context that I saw. The 20 most definitely could have been more or something she'd like. The 500 per month for living expenses. I think it sounds pretty bad just hearing it, but after knowing the information of she might become homeless. Sure. It's a really good gift. So i do think he's in the wrong for just giving 20. But she shouldn't have made such a big fuss about it then and there. I know I'm making it easy for getting gifts for my future Wife. I love Transformers, Marvel, DC, and Star Wars. Including One Punch Man. So once I tell her that after we meet. It'll be very easy to get me something as a gift.
I get that part. It is about the monthly stipend and why not just give a thoughtful gift? Maybe this is in another culture? I would be more grateful for a small but heartfelt gift than some cash.
