I pulled a mana drain from the 2 extra packs my lgs hands out for just simply buying a pre-release kit. I also ended up pulling a 2nd one from a Whatnot Collector Pack the day before! i pulled Vaultborn Tyrant from my kit. My chases were pull and I'll most likely just buy the only other card I need at this point.

Anyone notice the difference in color quality and color variation on front and back between pre-release cards and play boosters?

You're probably noticing a difference between Japanese and US-printed cards. The Japanese cards are typically higher quality, with a smoother surface and brighter colors. Another indication is the card ordering within the pack. They're the opposite way around for Japanese packs.

@@MTGUnpacked Upon your comment, I double checked the boxes to see where they were made. In this particular case, my pre-releases came from the US, my play booster box from Japan. So, perhaps in general what you're saying is true, which I would believe, but for some reason I find the US printed cards more appealing. Looking at the "art cards," the whites look much whiter and generally all of the colors pop more with the US made cards. In addition, on the backs with the magic logo, the blue in the magic lettering is much more impressive and pops. I feel like there may even be a slight difference between the card heft--the US printed ones seeming a little more durable and resistant to bending. I am quite surprised that these could be considered the "same" card. I play but I also collect and I'm wondering how these differences will be perceived over time.
