I’m using two dbx 160 VU on bass drum and snare and they sound fantastic. I’m also using two DBX 161s for my live broadcasting Facebook and TH-cam electronic performances. Until recently, I switched from my dbx 161 to Joe Meek sc 3 DAD for my broadcast live video performances and found that the dbx are much more powerful. Now I’m using the dbx 161 for other recording studio functions. There is a difference on sound between the dbx 160s and dbx 161. The difference is the noise floor. The dbx 161s have a substantial amount of hiss but blends the mix in a good way. I haven’t tried blending a stereo mix on the dbx 160s yet, though. So I can’t really compared them on that aspect. Cheers 🍻
Very Nice. I'm sure you know this but the DBX160 VUs should be very close in serial numbers to be used on a mix buss or stereo. They varied from year to year so that is something to keep in mind. Cheers !!
Wish we had a direct feed of the audio for the purposes of hearing clearly and judging from TH-cam. Is that possible to re upload with the actual audio?
So is this essentially more aggressive than a 1176 a? Sounds like it can crush the signal faster. I mean that in a good way though . Although many people wouldn’t compress this hard I have always loved this sound, especially as a rock musician who loves punk, I just feel like this would add so much intensity. It doesn’t have a side chain feature but essentially I could just compress another track of the same Audio and raise the volume to taste like a side chain correct? I’m not a newbie writer but am a newbie at mixing etc. Iv found tho analog gear seems to have more body than plugins generally . This sounds really impressive to me .
das SPEZIAL Absolutely, the 161 is just an unbalanced version of the 160. Just keep in mind it will operate a lowercase level, but the same VCA circuitry.
Nah, the drummer practices the part until it's properly funky. Was a comp needed to record 'funky drummer'? Comps are just broadcasting/studio tools - not some magical 'fix-it' that improves anything. They were invented to mitigate distortions resulting from the limited dynamic range of old broadcast gear.
@@shaft9000 idk ive seen many bands play live and the drums on the recordings are nice n tight but live they are really sloppy .. maybe thats more of a thing that started in the 80s over processing drums to make it super tight and danceable.. to be more like a drum machine
@@shaft9000 that’s not correct. Compressors can be a tool for a utilitarian function or a creative tool to creatively shape dyamnics, transients, and the envelope of sounds.
Sold my pair 8 or 9 years ago. Miss them every day!
Even though the UAD plugin sounds pretty close, you just can't beat the analog unit. Amazing stuff!
well it analog dude it's the best shit for real
Ever tried to sell a used plugin? LOL
So cool. Serial compression. Sounds awesome powerful. Cheers

It was just a video to sell the pair I had. Never posted it as a legitimate comparison video.
owww dbx160 ... ❤🔥is always in my snare bus 🤘🏻
What is the famous “flack” or pop that you’re describing?
Unless you have experience using compressor limiters it's kinda hard to explain.
Do you know what a snare drum is? Did you hear it?
Do you have mono drums daisy chained thru both units ? So you apply limiting and compression to one signal with both units?
Allen Michael That’s exactly right.
@@marcusdolby1 are you selling?
Allen Michael I was, this pair went to Fame studios in Muscle Shoals.
marcusdolby1 I made you an offer on eBay lol
We have 3 pairs of these, love them a lot

Hi. Is this DBX 160 VU similar to the one used by Steve Harris of Iron Maiden? Is this compressor more agressive and raw ? Thanks.
Sounds like "Blood sugar sex magic"
sounds incredible 😍
would the DBX 161 do the same as these DBX 160VU ?

das SPEZIAL There might be a transformer-less change in tone.
@@marcusdolby1 :) thanks for all the help mate
I want one
I want two
Ryan Rood with two, you can rule the world
Awsum
Would you ever compress rap drums ?
Depends on the sample, they could already be compressed.
So you need 2 to get things funky
Not necessarily, this was an extreme example. Generally professional engineers wouldn’t process a source this hard.
@@marcusdolby1 when you limited the compressor thats the sound of so many 80s rap / rock /dance records ! Amazing !!
