  • Brass can be soft or it can be hard depending on how the part was manufactured and a few other variables. This video is about the annealing process. Also, Art does some experiments about the various hardnesses of brass.
Here is the link to the video about annealing a cornet bell before removing dents: "Repairing a VERY Dented Bell: Old Cornet Restoration Project #4"

Do you want to leave a tip so Art can continue to make more quality videos?

I am very used to working with steel but different rules apply to brass. Thanks so much for your video, now I can tackle by brass job much better informed !

Though I've learnt all these in my metallurgy related classes, still so much fun to watch this video.

It’s cool to see that in practice.

I think dipping it in water is quenching the metal and adding some hardness. When you anneal metal, you want to let it cool very slowly to keep it soft.

Great video! Is there a difference in alloy in brass used to make musical instruments? Thank you kindly!

Great instructions, thanks and how to you harden brass? Can it be done without becoming brittle?

can you show us how to bend brass tubes, please?

I'd like to know if there's a way to harden it as well...

You can harden brass by bending, pulling, or rolling it between a mandrel and a dent roller. Of course, most of these things can damage the metal.

Should bad dents be annealed before getting the magnet/ball treatment? How hot? I am getting null results on a baritone horn. Can I cover the adjacent areas with wet rags so that any solder does not melt?

Sorry it took me so long to get back to you. We just had a baby and I am finally getting around to answering questions.
It may be possible, but very risky. If you are anywhere near a solder joint, do not try it. It will also burn the lacquer. I suggest taking it apart and pushing the dents out with mandrels.

Pro tip. Dont smash your face in to the mouthpiece hole on a trombone while doing the Executioner. 6 stitches later and I learned just how hard that brass can be

This is what lockdown has brought to ppl mentally: they just start to destroy their instruments. (Jk)

alright, now how to harden it back after annealing?

You can harden brass by bending or hammering it. That is not usually possible on musical instruments though. There may be other ways too, but I do not know.

that is very important an instrument can be damaged when we weld if we do not know the temperature master thanks very good video master about the distance of the keys you see I asked him before thanks
