Mark: you are SPOT ON when you talk about the “equalization” of an all-Mahogany guitar. There is nothing else like it. It is warm, even & native. I have an all-Sapele Martin and it sounds similar to mahogany. It doesn’t boom like my 1973 Yamaha, but the clarity is unsurpassed. Just a sweet guitar. Thanks for pointing that out.

It should sound better than that, actually. I think it might be the strings. A heavier gauge might sound a bit tighter. (Though do you dare increase the tension?)

What we do not have in the US today, the wood. Just finished building a coco bolo w/ African ebony fret board and bridge in Nicaragua. Super dense woods need hard play with a thick pick then they will have more tone, response etc as they age.

Mine is a ‘42 with lotsa top wear. Tortoise headstock overlay too. Neck reset a couple years ago…inevitable with old, lightly built acoustics. Plays & sounds killer. I bet this one has had a top refin or at least an overspray.

You can certainly carve a new one to coax a bit better intonation out of it though.) But something's making it sound not as great as it should. Strings too light, maybe? Sounds a bit loose and floppy to me.
