Over 6 months have passed since I took the first steps of getting my rare Mitsubishi Magna Ralliart resprayed. The first painter ended up taking me for a ride, taking my money and leaving me with a half-finished car that he'd done a half-arsed job on. This broke my heart and ruined my budget, and so I let the car sit under a cover for another 3 months.
In early 2024, I decided that the car needed to get finished - and I pulled out all the stops to raise the funds and then find someone who could do it for me.

Please note: I enjoy working on cars but I can't promise that what I do will work for your particular car, or that you won't harm yourself, someone else, your car, or your warranty doing it. Please be safe, be responsible and if you're not sure what you're doing, get a qualified mechanic to help you out.
Sorry to leave you all on a cliffhanger - but I wanted to get this video out asap to update you all. This is literally where I'm up to as of today, so stay tuned as we put this Magna back together 👌
Was a good update! I was bummed about the work that didn't happen the first time around, but I'm happy for you that it's worked out now. Great to see a small aussie car content creator having a good go and doing it successfully, even if your Adelaide accent is a little funny
@@joelg4849what?
Sean. Welcome back. I totally understandable that you have more important things to take care of. And the Magna looking sweet.
Good sh!t ✌️😎
I love this I wish more people would do these cars up there so underated this guy needs more subs what a legend
Man......I almost cried watching this.....Im so very very very happy for you as a Former MMAL Employee who was there from day one when the Ralliart hit out Factory Floor I knew then all those years ago what a special car we put together on a shoe string budget and too see the joy on your face now it still makes me feel proud that we build an awsome car and people like yourself appeciate it even more.......Well done to you looking forward to seeing it with all the bells and whistles back on it !!!
Thanks for all your work! It is awesome seeing all the handwritten markings around the car and on interior parts etc. I can really tell that you guys tried your best to build something incredible within the budget limitations... imagine what it could have been if Mitsubishi Japan had given it more backing.
Dont we/I know it.......There was a lot of passion and dedication behind it and its a miracle it even went into production....@@MotoringBoxTV
@@MotoringBoxTVAWD would have made these car's one of the top collector's edition if it was AWD ralliart but as you mentioned the budget was tight although i think in a few years these car's will be extremely collectable because of their ozzie build. It usually takes around 30+ year's after manufacturing for price's to begin to take off.
You probably saw my TJ Sports as well from the first month of TJ production. TJ Magna build number 00564. It is still going strong nearly 24 years later. I plan to I transfer it to club registration one day.
yes I have pictures of them on the production line...@@pcorf
It's a good looking car and a rare edition worth saving. Glad you found a bloke who knows his stuff and acted professionally when taking you through the process.
What a breath of fresh air after your last experience!
Absolutely. It's hard to find good people like that.
@@MotoringBoxTV you've worked so hard on this car you believe in when plenty overlook it, that someone was looking out for you.
PS it helps he seems to see eye to eye with you in being enthused with the car.
As an Ipswich local myself I'm so happy to see local trades and talent being used!
Absolutely, will try to do so more often.
keen to see this beauty on the road! glad you sorted the drama
Thank you mate!
What a wonderful story!
Thank you mate!
Sean, so glad to see this getting back on track. I seriously wouldn’t have blamed you if you had just shipped it off and moved onto something else.
Well done mate, well done.
When it was sitting under the cover in the yard in pieces and further degrading with every day that went by, I almost wanted it to just go away. But thankfully we've found a way and I am feeling much better about it!
Everyone wants things done in a hurry, but the best things and problems that come with it, take time and worth it later on
Sean, I'm so happy that you are seeing this through (even at a personal cost). I know how much you love and care about cars, so seeing the Ralliart get the restoration you always set out to do... is amazing.
It'll be worth it!
Glad to see you're back!
We all need a bit of 'Box in our lives.
Certain people don't.
What a fantastic video. I thoroughly enjoyed the story behind the journey
Says a lot about you for not having given up. How many guys would let it sit in a shed after a set back like that. Can’t wait to see the finished product. Looking good already. Grew up with these cars and love watching you work on them. Awesome work.
I believe if I didn't have a YT channel it would have ended up sitting for a lot longer. So thanks to you (and everyone else who watches) it has really helped keep it all going.
You’re lucky that your partner allowed you to use your savings, that’s something that can’t be understated it’s a huge deal especially if you’re saving.
Looks amazing
Dont forget the tyre shine! What a magnificent colour
Good to see a good result so far, and great to see that little shop stepping up to get it done. Also a shout out to the wives/partners that support our crazy ideas, not because it makes any financial sense whatsoever but because it makes us happy.
I always like to support the little guys, and thankfully it turned out good this time!
Oooh here we go!!
keep pushing man, stay positive !
Just stumbled upon this. Doesn't matter what the project is, good to see something done right. Good camera work and editing, too.
Words cannot express how happy I am for you, Sean! You’re keeping the legacy of our Australian automotive industry alive and what better way than to preserve a Ralliart Magna, which are just getting rarer to find these days.
I look forward to seeing another video of yours in the near future!
Thank you mate! I still never see these around (well, apart from 1 other car in Ipswich) so I can't wait to get it back on the road.
That’s awesome Sean. We’ve been waiting for this episode to come up! Best of luck to you and can’t wait for the next episode.
Your song choices are always top notch
So happy it's underway again. Bloody awesome
Well done Sean (and Harley!), you deserve this. Home stretch now - enjoy the feeling 🙂
Good to see you finishing off this Aussie legend.👌
(Greg from your Patreon) I’m really happy for you Sean, it’s great to see the Magna resprayed now
Happy for you Sean. The Magna is looking good. What a journey!
It's not a lot, but I hope this helps you recoup some of the money you borrowed. Glad to see the Magna back in action as well.
Thank you so much mate.
Mitsubishi Magna
Glad its all working out for you. You must feel relieved
Looks great. Can’t wait to see it buffed. Worth the wait.
I can relate to this, I paid a recommended paint shop to do my car. 1yr and $15k later, it came back worse than it started and now I'm repainting it myself...
Glad it worked out for you in the end!!
Nice to see it progressing again
This video made me cry, because the VK in the background reminded me of when I put my old VK in for paint many years ago , only to have it destroyed months after being back on the road. I miss that car, it was my life back then
Seeing that VK made me wish I never sold mine almost 20 years ago
Cars can be a rollercoaster ride of emotions - we put so much time into them, and it can all be taken away in an instant... often in circumstances which are outside our control. Gotta appreciate what we've got, while we still have it.
excited for this mate!!
Thanks mate! Your R32 is next!
Kudos for sticking with it mate, I know how tuff it can be when a build goes wrong.
It will all be worth it in the end. Ps you got a great missus if she understands your plight and helps out.
Happy to see the progress! Back in 2020 I recommended for you to buy a Magna as a project, and it’s great to see you have overcome the challenges and are nearly finished!
So glad to see you and the Magna pull through a very trying period. Very lucky to have such a supportive partner and an amazing family. Great to see that you found an another Aussie business to get the car looking great 👍
Very lucky indeed, and to be able to share it with you all is just the cherry on top.
Seems like the town of Ipswich keeps coming good on your channel! Glad to see you moving forward, all the best 👍
You fkn beauty. So happy for you Sean. This OG is thrilled to see this done 💖
One of THE OG's right here. Thanks mate.
Glad you're sticking with it
Don't mind the wait
You will have a smile on your face when you first hit the road
I've only just started the reassembly but it's already lookin fantastic. Can't wait.
its great you are showing the reality of a build like this. anyone who has had work done on their cars as part of a build or upgrades there will be times you are disapointed with the result or a disaster like this. it can be really hard to get back on track.
This bloke deserves way more subscribers.
Looks great. I had a black AUXR8 resprayed about 11 or 12 years ago and seeing the previously tired duco looking mint is one of the most satisfying feelings I've had. Also makes you keep it as mint as possible given all the cashola the job cost!
So glad to see that you're back and doing fine mate. The car looks fabulous! Looking forward to seeing how it turns out 🤙
Already looks good. Looking forward to the finished car.
Sean, I'm glad you found someone who was ready to take the job on. It'll look fantastic once it's finished!
Like a jilted lover it was hard to put my trust into someone after being stuffed around so badly before. But thankfully I chose correctly this time.
keen to see the final product
I'm so happy to see it painted. It's going to look absolutely gorgeous. Well done and H & H
Thank you mate.
Good on you man, that's awesome. Looking forward to seeing it buffed and back together
It's good to see you making some process on the Magna. One thing I hate about leaving cars in primer for long periods of time is it makes them highly vulnerable to rust.
Yes that was stressing me out too. Complete nightmare.
I been wondering what has been going on with the mighty Magna. So glad you are back on track. So good to see you save a little piece of Australian Motoring history, the time when we designed and built cars. Sad that they will never return. From me, thanks.
Wonder no more - we're on the move again!
That car will look better than when it left the factory. Excellent work by yourself and the team at H&H. It is good to see a car that was saved from being trashed and ending up as land fill.
Sean, over the moon for you that you have been able to find a great team to help you achieve your vision & have to say your wife is awesome !! Can't wait to see the finished product, you have put so much into it thus far, I am sure it will be looking better than new !! Congratulations on finding the passion for the car again !!
I'll pass that onto her! Thanks a lot mate.
Yay, the fagna's painted - well done mate! 👍 looks great.
I miss my Magna. I live in the US now and I couldn't find a Diamante that wasn't overly abused and wasn't full of rust. I got a Volvo S60R 6 speed manual now but I really miss my Magna still. Glad to see the ralliart has been painted and it looks great. Hope to see more of it in the future. Keep it up Lad.
Good to see a Magna getting some love. These cars are awesome and underrated. I understand what you mean about spending money on a car on a single income. I did the same for a Valiant back when they were mocked and none liked em. Glad you have it back on track. Excellent.
Thanks mate, stay tuned.
I'm so happy for you and to see the car finally progressing. This is the car that got me into watching your channel. As a former Magna Sports owner, the car was much better than many gave credit for. This was the feedback I received from others, whom I let drive it. I would have loved an AWD model, but it wasn't to be. Can't wait for further updates. Cheers and thanks for the update. Thanks to your Missus, for letting it happen.
A lot of people came for the Magna! It has always been amazing to me, as I didn't realise how many people loved them.
Good to see you back
Nice work! I had a 99 Cocoon white TH Altera. Had it 10yrs from 2003 until. 2013. Bought a Cocoon white 2000 TJ in 2013 for $3000. Swapped a few bits over. Wave spring failed and destroyed the gearbox at 140,000km. Fitted one of the last Mitsubishi factory reconditioned boxes for $2500. Replaced the hood lining and got some new old stock Outlsnder rims cheap from a dealership. Still got it and is at 185,000km. For a 28yo car, it’s still neat and tidy and comfortable ride. Hopefully I can keep it rolling until the time when EVs actually become an economically viable option. Keep up the good work and vids. ✊
HOLY SHIT, YES
EDIT: I just watched the video and I must say Sean, I'm so damn happy for you. From now on is gonna be piece of cake. I'll wait impatiently to see the rest of the process. Cheers mate, much love from Spain!
Still plenty to do! And trips to the wreckers to buy lots of little things I need. There are so many plastic parts which are brittle with age and either break when you take them off, or go to put them back on again.
@@MotoringBoxTV I totally get the feeling, it happens the same with my MK3 GTI. It's just patience!
Awesome video mate, well done!
As everyone else has said, I’m very happy for you Sean. So glad you found the right person in the end. I hope your experience will bring business Harleys way. You will be able to repay the family coffers. Can’t wait to see the final product.
Looks great! Can't wait to see it polished and shining :)
Looks mint 👌
I'm glad you found a better workshop to get your car finished
Very inspiring, I’m sure lots of us car guys have been in this place. Keep going for that dream
What a fantastic development!!!! I know the wallet has taken a hammering, but ain't it sweet that you found someone to get it done, and done right. Hope you enjoy the crap out of that car Sean, you've earnt it 👍👍
yee the cyberpunk music, cant wait to see this car fully done!!!
8:12 haven't seen that Sable pearl finish for ages. A lot of these cars are just bombs these days.
Congrats on getting it sorted finally!
Nice touch with the NFS4 High Stakes "Showroom" background music for the garage reveal 😂
Fantastic update
Have been waiting so long to hear what is going on.
Feel for you, but you are getting there. Love the content.
Great success
Thank you mate.
Thanks for the great video, and well done for persisting as you have to restore a part of Australian motoring history.
Awesome to see the magna back on track. I'm not a mitsubishi fan but the ralliart is a rarity definately worth saving. can't wait to see it shine 😎
I wasn't a fan until I drove this one. Sometimes it's interesting to branch out into something new or different. Thanks for the comment.
Feel for you mate, can't wait to watch
So glad to see you are back I've been a long time follower you do awesome work with all the vehicles you have and the Magna looks soo good
Oh great to see the update, sucks u got stung. Happens sometimes. Looking forward to seeing it back together, its going to look great.
Looks great well done. Can't wait to see it finished.
Absolutely wrapped for you mate.. As Mr Balboa would say:
"It's not about how hard you hit. It's about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward. How much you can take and keep moving forward."
Brooo I’m so happy for you!! Can’t wait for the next video!
This is so great to see! Good on you I commented on a previous video how I took on a project Magna. Extremely rare AWD 2005 in Zen purple. Had paint peel and hail damage. Happy to say I've had the whole car restored and graphene coated a month later.
Well done for not giving up buddy 👍
Glad to see it's now painted, I've been hanging out to see what happened.
I've been in the same situation. Had a car at a recommended painter and had bugger all done in three months and poor quality work so I had to take the car back but I lost 6k to him.
Car sat for a good 3years before I could bring myself to look at it again.
Soul destroying was the only way I could think of describing it... it's an absolute nightmare of a situation. The next person you take it too pretty much has to start the job from scratch otherwise they can't really stand by their work. Having been through it I can fully understand why you gave it 3 years. Hope it all worked out in the end for you.
Stay strong mate, u do such a great job with the cars n vids.
Sean I'm so happy for you!!!
Excellent paint job, can't wait
Absolutely Friggen Stoked for you Seano!!! H&H have absolutely knocked it out of the park. As a fellow Car Guy, I was very impressed with his professionalism and attitude towards the other business owner and how he didn’t publicly shame anyone (on camera at least lol). But seriously H&H should stand for Humble & Honest.
Great Result and Can’t Wait To See The Finished Product. Cheers Mate, Pauly D.
Thanks a lot for the comment mate. For the record, he didn't say anything bad about them off-camera either.
This is so so awesome to see!
Well done mate!!
This is my first time seeing your channel, the quality of your videos are fantastic!
I’ve been in the exact same situation as you unfortunately. Took my car to a recommended workshop where the price seemed too good to be true. Drove past for weeks with no progress and constant excuses etc, eventually got the car back and it all has to be redone.
Glad you got a good result in the end.
Thank goodness! It's very pleasing to see that you have managed to get past the disaster and have something to look forward to. We have something to look forward to as well 😊👍
Happy you’re back, mate… but with a certain amount of trepidation, too…
Wow can't wait to see the end result.
Good to see that the car is coming back together mate
Happy to see the mighty Magna back on track and can’t wait to see it finished.
Really looking forward to see the end product. Late 90s early 2000s Australian built cars were quite unique performance wise. That black on the Magna looks nuts. All put together with the factory enkei wheels wow😮. Make sure you get the drivers seat bolster fixed then job done
Sorry to hear that this project has been so difficult, but I look forward to seeing the final result. And I hope the folks at H&H get plenty of work from the exposure
If you want your car left unattended and unlocked in the street outside their shop then go right ahead
Ive been looking for a shop to repaint my baby with love and care and not rush it, so happy to see that there are shops out there still doing that
Such an oddball cool car! Glad you stuck with it
Its a shame you're not in Victoria, I got my Evo close doored for 6 grand and they did a quality job in decent time, real professional outfit too. Glad you found someone who knows their stuff, looks like it came out extremely well.
Similar pricing!
I had a car resprayed years ago by a family friend, promised me a bare metal full respray in 4 weeks. This guy had a fairly decent workshop and name and being a family friend you would think he looked after me but after 6 months and seeing the car sit in primer for months I felt much like you and got pretty upset with him demanding my car to be finished and returned. The feeling you get when you see your car just painted and in the booth is incredible so I understand the highs and lows you been through but in the end I had a bloody awesome paint job and a car that turned heads so all the ill feelings I had disappeared and I think you will be the same. Great to see a happy ending to this and I’m sure just like myself you have learnt a thing or two along the journey.
Already feeling much better about it! There's a lot of work to do (the whole interior pretty much needs to come out again too) but it feels good to be making progress again
Could have been so easy for you to give up on it, but glad to see you’ve battled on and found someone that was reliable. It’s gonna look great when you get it back together
Already looking absolutely fantastic!
Great effort buddy… good to see you back, hope family recovered and life’s good….
Everyone who doesn’t like Magna’s don’t watch….
Great to see the progress mate, despite all the drama.
